Retro Strappy Wrap Top & Matching Skirt
Good evening! After a busy morning at the vet (all good, just getting these kittens as heathy as can be now they are in their forever home ❤) I've finally got this month's video for you.
I decided to try something different and make a top without sleeves, quite outside of my comfort zone! I actually love the resulting set and I am excited to wear it soon this summer, even if I'd better pair it with a lot of spf and a giant hat.
Thank you so much for your support. I'll be back again with another bonus video (the black and white space queen dress) soon!

So, years later, I wanted to comment because I have pertinent information. We adopted a little tortie girl a year before you did and she also was not into cuddling at all. She would occasionally come in for a nap or grace our feet with a cuddle. BUT, in the last few months, she’s now our cuddliest cat. And wants to picked up and kissed constantly. So you could honestly, be months away from her needing more cuddles than you could have ever dreamed possible.
I’m not sure how but I’d missed this until today. Fabulous set. I’m not keen on patterns that don’t allow me to wear a bra either. I’ve made a lovely 40s sun wrap dress but then realized my back bra strap showed so I only wore it once with a little jacket so I reused the fabric for something else. Now I know more about altering patterns (thanks to you) perhaps I’ll get it out and see what I could do to make it work. Also saw a sweet dress pattern picture (30s) the other dayI liked and mentally went through all the steps I’d need to do to draft it from my bodice and skirt blocks. O.K I haven’t actually tried it yet but to me it means I’m understanding way more and edging closer to just doing it. 💕
Oh and I love all your work. I sew for other people to your videos.
Thank you Susan! You are kinder than me, I only sew for myself 😅
As soon as I get the chaos that is my place cleaned up a bit.... I am making a basic block and doing some of this. I need a wardrobe that fits and is not a compromise.
So lovely <3
Thank you Nicole!
Oh so cute!!!!!!!!! The added ribbon on the bust really tipped it into vintage in a very good way. You should be in front of some beach painted backdrop singing about … who knows but it is very Hawaii movie musical some how.
Thank you Thea! 🍹🌴🌴
My kitten liked to lay on a fuzzy blanket more than me so I put the blanket on my lap.
Hi, Here is my long comment warning. I don't seem to be able to make short ones, especially when talking to someone as much of a friend as you make me feel (and probably all of us, but I'm not comfortable with speaking for anyone but myself). As lovely as always. I really love the top as I have the same issue with straps and bras. The skirt though, is a tad difficult for me to follow along with. If I ever will do something like that I'll come back to it, but the whole pleating thing is over my head. For now My mind would have gone towards a voile or a batiste for lining, but I have no idea about finding colors that would suit your batik and of course it would perhaps not been reversible? I seem to be able to understand most of what you are saying and doing, though. If I can, all these other very accomplished people must be doing it even better. I would say don't worry about it because you're doing great. You were great back in the day when I couldn't understand anything of what you were doing, and now that you've taught me, you're still great. I'm getting to be an accomplished theoretical sewist. A practical one, not so much. That being said I managed to cut out all the parts of a very simple blouse toile today. That was all this broken body I cohabitate with was up to, before I ran out of spoons. I'm very pleased to have done this. I broke out my new scissors and everything. Hopefully I'll be able to sew it up in a few days, and see if I have to make adjustments. It's a store bought pattern and you taught me to make it my own. (I would highly recommend Google the Spoon Theory for those that aren't familiar with it. It works for non-disabled people too, btw) How to get a cat to want to sit on you demanding to be petted. Well my trick is being very allergic and not move so not to disturb the air (and dande) around me. This makes me a cat magnet, and always has. Even really grumpy lady cats that want everyone to adore them from afar and haven't even approached anyone without a can and can opener within the last 13+ years of their life, becomes clingy lap kittens around me. They will want us to bop heads and faces, and will try even harder as I withdraw, so I don't end up in the ED (emergency department) that evening. It works so well that I carry an EpiPen (two when I visit houses with cats in them). Don't take me wrong, I love cats and I love hearing them purr. I like to pet them too. They are so soft and pettable, it's hard to resist. Without my allergies there would have been both cats and dogs around me. They are very good if you have to deal with a broken body, and there are a lot of studies that have shown this beyond reasonable doubt (in my opinion). So unless for the purpose of being a cat magnet, I can't recommend. As always, I'm looking forward to what you're coming up with next. With greetings from up north. Yours, Ann
Thank you so much for posting this. Not only does it look amazing, but it fits right in with the pinafore I'm currently making by hacking my basic bodice block. Fairly close to what you did - straps and all - but without the wrap. Thank you for giving me the confidence AND skills to draft my own bodices.
All things are possible through the magic of block patterns indeed! ✨
Pretty fabric and no monkeys hiding in the leaves either! The white accessories resemble the leaves nicely, it's all very cute on you. There's a definite summer vibe to this and I enjoyed the gentle guitar music a la Chet Atkins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-c66SJPuUI
Thank you Penny! Love a print that is just foliage 😂💚
Love this set! Possible solution to the sun screen issue- giant straw hat 😻
Thank you Rebecca! A hat is always a good idea in my book!
This is so so adorable. Amazing fit! And your arms are absolutely perfect. Sigh...what I wouldn't do to trade out my skinny stick arms for shapely arms :) As far your lady cat is concerned, you might just have to make her standoffishness part of her charm. I've had my cat Bungee for 7 years and he has always been a butt. We've nicknamed him so many terrible things and it's become cute and we wouldn't have in any other way. And, I hope the sick little kitties feel better soon!
Thank you! She's our princess and I fear she knows it, we all feel extra special if she sits near us 😂
This outfit is so stinking cute and will be great for hot summer days! Your neckline solution came out really great too. Question, why did you lower the bust point when you cut the block into princess seams? Do you have to do that with every princess seam pattern?
Thank you Kathy! It's possible my apex is just a little high on my bodice in general and it just isn't very noticeable until I go for the princess seam instead. I need to do a full adjustment of my blocks anyhow, since it has been around 5-6 years since I did so, and bodies change and shift over time of course!
This is gorgeous and you look gorgeous in it! I do like the idea of no buttons, zips, snaps. I think that your instructions of what you’re doing are easily understood. I love the way the ‘shelf’ turned out and the wrapped skirt. I love how the whole garment turned out🥰 I think that the saying ‘dogs have masters and cats have slaves’ is very true. Our Smoochie was really cuddly until we got a dog. He never forgave us. We had the dog 6 years before he passed (recently) and he stayed stand-offish to the end. Even when he was sick, he wouldn’t let us cuddle him. We were in the dog house! Sending best wishes from Down Under💚💚💚📚🥰🇦🇺😎
Thank you Rhonda! ❤ Smoochie said if you want a dog in the house that is where you will stay, dang 😅 Lucky ours came from a foster home with two dogs so they shouldn't be too miffed by them, but alas we are just not dog people in this house, so they are safe to rule the place alone
This is so pretty! I love the idea of having two tops for the skirt. I may need to borrow the line about being as scandalous as I want, lol. Personally, I am kind of allergic to the sun (like, I turn purple and blister in less time than it takes to order a pizza and get it delivered), so this would be a strictly after dark style for me, but I am in love with it nonetheless. I also love the idea of this style of skirt as a swimsuit coverup (if I actually went swimming any more. See previous note about sun issues, lol). As far as quilting cottons go, I love them for blouse/work shirt styles, just because the weight of the fabric makes it more “sun-proof” for me (yes, I can and have gotten sunburned through my clothes) and for casual “house dresses”. The variety of prints and colours make it easy to find something fun and cheerful and they are easily washed, even if there are nicer fabrics out there. I really want to be able to wear rayon and lawn dresses and blouses, but since I can only wear them after dark and I don’t go anywhere after dark I just don’t make them. For the kitty, food is my go to method for making friends with pets. She may just not be an overly cuddly cat, though.
Thank you! The sun is vicious but this sounds extra painful! I try to avoid outside myself, but I don't have such a good excuse 😅
Very cute.very versatile and each piece can definitely be worn with other pieces. As far as kitties go, mine is very antisocial unless it is her idea to be snuggled. She sleeps on my lap often but doesn’t always want to be touched. And she always has to have a blanket between her and me. She will stand on the arm of the chair and make short demanding chirps until I put a blanket across my lap. She is almost 16. We have had her since she was a kitten and she has always been a rather strange cat. She is actually my daughter’s cat, but when my daughter moved out and got married, we knew that Marie wouldn’t really thrive in a new environment. It took her 6 months to get comfortable when we got a new dog, so changes aren’t her thing. So now she is my lap buddy. My daughter lives close so they do get to see each other frequently. And yes my husband and I are Marie’s staff 😂
Echoing the blanket suggestion. My two cats strongly dislike lying on bare skin, but as soon as there is a blanket on the lap, they are super keen. They both will often pad around on the sofa, climbing over both mine and my partner's laps, looking kind of lost and sad, until one of us pulls a blanket out XD this is great in winter, not so much in summer! When I was a kid, we had an ex-stray who wanted to be sociable but who started out scared of people. Eventually he started sitting on the newspaper if it was next to you, and then started sitting on the newspaper if it was on your lap, and then finally started sitting on the lap without the newspaper. It took quite a few years to get to that last one, but we got there in the end!
So stinking cute!
I have no idea why Patreon keeps reverting back to just Michael Woody. It is supposed to say Mike & Ceara Woody. Hi. I'm Ceara. Wonderful as always!! I tried to sew something today, just adding button holes for a garment. Swearing. Cussing. Holes in my fabric. Then I watch you. You make it look very easy!! We have a house full of rescues and the one just does not like to be held. We saved him as a nearly dead kitten and nursed him back to good health and he has just never warmed to being held or even touched. Except in the middle of the night when you are sleeping and then he makes mad, furious biscuits before running away. 🤷♀️ Some kitties are just like that. Frustrating. He acts like I'm his servant as well. Haute kitty. Hopefully Sophie warms up and trusts.
Thank you Ceara! She's getting better about sleeping near us, so hopefully on a lap is in our future ❤✨
Gorgeous set and so summery!! If you’re ever in Seoul (for whatever reason), there is a great fabric market that sells basically every kind of fabric including every color of poplin imaginable. I don’t know that Seoul is on your radar to visit, and I’m sure lots of other big cities have similar markets, but if you ever do end up here, you’d probably enjoy it. Also, so much suiting wool. Whenever I go, I think about what incredible things you could make.
Thank you! For every color of poplin I'd add Seoul to any travel itinerary ✈ This market sounds fantastic, and it would be so nice to go fabric shopping in person again in general.
So CUTE! 😍
Thank you Mary!
