Red Roses Rayon Dress // Butterick 3301 From 1945
This month I'm diving into another 1940's Butterick design! And this one includes some of those funny hip drapes you see often in forties styles, but that are uh...not my favorite on my own shape personally 😂

Both the fabric and the dress are stunning. I will try my hand at this. Thanks
So glad to have finally joined patreon! There's SO MUCH CONTENT on here, even more than your amazing catalog on YT! 😍 thanks for letting me know you had already done my dream pattern that I couldnt get my hands on, can't wait to try it!
Hi! Just joined your Patreon and am learning so much!!! I’d love more details about using steam to help shrink floppy fabrics back into shape. I’m working on a crepe top and can’t get the neckline to behave. Maybe your tip about the steam might help? Thanks for all your hard work. I’m happy to support such talent!
Lovely dress and the way you demonstrated how to get the effect you wanted just by looking at the pattern and working it out is really clever. Also, every time you say ‘pain in the arse’ makes me smile, so British! If you do move over here I think you will miss halloween though, we brits just don’t really do it, at least not in the more rural areas. Big cities may be different, I left London 30 years ago so maybe it has changed.
I am just living for this dress, the fabric is stunning. I don't need any extra hip, lord knows I have enough but I'm going to give this a whirl.
The textile is stunning. As is the dress. Your patterning inspired two thoughts for me, as I may try this one down the line. I suppose if one wanted to be extra, they could use your "yoke" version of the top, and take the time to pattern match the un-gathered section of the top portion to the lower portion. That would be a way to give the illusion of the original design even further but with the better fit your seam allowance provides. Then, I'm curious if one could do the same "pannier" treatment to the back skirt, matching the pleats to create one draped floop front to back. Could be an interesting look. I suppose it's impossible to do without a side seam, but again perhaps pattern matching would give the illusion of one draped piece all around the hips. I may experiment! This is my first time commenting as I've been too shy, but I do want to say how much I appreciate your skill, eye, and openness. It has been a pleasure to watch your content and I've learned so much. Thank you.
This looks absolutely beautiful on you. Is it possible that the gathered shoulder material was made by adding more material to the shoulder? I played with some extra material and it worked. I like your way as well. Straight into the point.
So, having lived with BDD myself for many years, I get why you're worried about how the panniers may add to an area that you consider already large enough, but honestly, the dress is stunning. YOU look stunning in that dress. The fabric is so floopy (floopy, LOVE that word) that any voulume added is minimal. It rocks, you rock it!
Thank you Luna ❤
Another beautiful dress and I love the high neckline yet its like a wrap :)
Thank you Ingrid!
Thank you for the tips on what to do when your floopy fabrics "grow". This happens to me all the time and i never know what to do! It especially happens to me around the zipper. The dress is lovely and the fabric is divine! I can't wait to see what you make next :)
Thank you Kathy!
You are amazing! How you figured this out is mind boggling. The shape is perfect for your figure. No you are not underweight...you are a perfect weight. This dress is amazing. Absolutely love the fabric. Lots of rose print in my stash of fabric.
Thank you Bobbie!
Like some other comments I think your overall silhouette looks great - not hippy at all. But I understand......I'm the same with the tops of my thighs! The original pattern had shoulder pads which would have given even more hour glass vavaavoom I think? I love the shape of those 40s/50s pads. I was interested to see that the 3rd option was closer in style lines to the original as far as the angle of the bodice drape and where it ended even though you used the same psttern starting point. For me 1 & 2 dropped too sharply to the bust whereas the image seemed to head more to the lower armscye? Anyway, as always one of my favourite channels have a great week.-
Thank you! Hope you have a great week too ❤
You look gorgeous in this dress! I think the silhouette is lovely though you may feel more comfortable balancing the panniers with shoulder pads ?? Beautiful fabric. 🥰 Sending best wishes and good vibes from Down Under 💚💚💚🌺💐🌸🇦🇺😎
Thank you Rhonda! Indeed I always love a shoulder pad, I need to cover some in the fabric scraps to match this dress and tack them in!
This dress is awesome! I have to admit I had to watch the drafting a couple times because I am such a sewing novice but will one day feel experienced enough to tackle it myself I do love it on you and I don’t think it accentuates your hips at all….another fantastic, lots of work on your part, video! Thank you !
Thank you Margo!
You rock it confidently and it’s a beautiful dress/style, I will definitely be trying this in the future. Hats off to your talent as usual lady! 🖤🐈⬛ those squares on the wall make me think of Blade Runner, hopefully I’m not the last person that noticed this lol.
Thank you Karin! The wall blocks are indeed inspired by Blade Runner and Frank Lloyd Wright. I first used them for my BR look book back in 2020 and distressed them this time to put them back up. I love those concrete block houses 🖤
The fabric! The dress! That spiral-y gold leaf brooch in the intro/outro!! All so good ^_^
Thank you Jen! The brooch is by Monet, and is pretty findable online ✨ I had to have it in silver too 😂
It’s beautiful.
Thank you Karla!
Bravo! I think the fit is very good. It’s completely obvious that that the flaps are fabric and not flab :) But it sure is hard to let go of what we think is “right” for ourselves. Hurrah for stepping out of your comfort zone 🖤🖤🖤 My bridge too far is a dramatic lip. I feel self conscious because my lips are thin and I think the bold color emphasizes that… baby steps
Thank you Susan! I sure like my simple skirts 😅
The new battleship grey tiles on the wall look great and your dress is very pretty. I like that the roses are big and bold, as opposed to small and close together.🌹
Thank you Penny!
Appreciate you showing somethings that are outside of your preferences. Its still your style but not your taste, kind of by you but not for you if that makes sense. Also, those stockings are fabulous. I did a double take as soon as I saw you modeling them and then was so glad you mentioned talked about them specifically.
Thank you! I am so enamored with these stockings, they feel so Blade Runner and I can't wait to wear them again ✨
That was some pattern drafting witchery today! Dress is beautiful on you black is definitely a great colour on you.
Thank you Marie!
I'm curious as to why you don't use some sort of water soluble fabric stiffener with your "floopy" fabrics. I'm also super excited about the knits.
Becuase the fabrics I use are often supposed to be dry clean only! And I am backing the knits with wovens and only using them for their fun metallic finishes, so I apologize for not /really/ using knits as intended 😂
I like that dress on you. I think it is flattering on your hips. Adding a smaller pleat further down would help transition the pleats a bit smoother to the straighter part of the skirt. What do you think? The fabric is very nice. Have to look for it. <3
Thank you Nicole! Yes I think the detail being less focused just on the top of the hips would definitely help 😅
