Dispatch no. 23 // Updates Podcast
It's February and time moves slowly. Sewing gets done, but little else seems to be happening at pace. Winter, ain't it great?
The book of infamy is called Ladies Garment Cutting and Making A Standard Textbook by F. R. Morris (again, if you know of a ebook of this...please just don't tell me or ill be sad 😅😩)

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is a debut novel and it's over 300k words! (According to google. I'm not about to count the words myself, but my copy is about a thousand pages, so it's Big.) The author wrote it in her spare time over a 10 year period, and it's a very successful book, so it may be rare for a first manuscript that long to be published, but not impossible!!
Hello lovely. Try this: www.vulture.com/article/noirs-to-watch-if-you-loved-widows.html You are probably familiar with most of these, but you may get a few surprises. Harry Potter is ours now. JK is trash, but the world she created is out there and ours. After all, people shouldn't stop dressing as (and loving) elves or orcs just because the films were produced by a sexual predator.
Hi, When you publicize the book, please make sure that you have that right according to American Copyright Law. In general the writer of a book needs to be dead for at least 50 years before you can publicize something. Outside of that you can do some things in public domain. I would hate to hear that your house money ends up paying legal fees. My apologize for poking my nose in, my atrophied lawyers instincts are twitching. Yours, Ann
Someone else is trying to get the book on project Gutenberg and can let me know about the copyright status soon luckily!
Definitely getting 84 Charing Cross Road vibes with your book purchase. Love both the book and the film - there's one particularly beautiful outfit when her friend visits London 🤩. Can't help with the book and film reccomendations I'm afraid
Have you seen Onibaba? No one really wins in it, but it’s a pretty excellent movie if you’re into samurai stuff with a great visual mood.
I will definitely check it out!
Cruella was a good one to watch ...I never got into the 101 Dalmation movies but this one had a different look at a she villain. Totally Star Wars crazy...was cool to see Mando in Boba Fett..gave it a little bit of extra that the show needed. I even got my husband into The Gilded Age ...I love the costumes ..the costume designer.s.In my opinion, show the difference between "new money and old money" during that period which is what the show is mainly about.
Definitely looking forward to Mando season 3!
Have you considered creating a wish list somewhere so that people could gift you something like a very fancy patterning book, or specific fabric yardages you're eyeing? I know most people lean into Amazon storefronts for that, but since you're pretty prolific on Pinterest, you could create something with direct links to products at Mood or on Etsy.
Aw thank you! Luckily the support I receive here on Patreon covers any needs I have for materials and resources, I just feel bad buying such an expensive book...I haven't done that since textbooks in collage 😅
I attended a webinar recently on how to get published and it was mentioned that one should first file for copyright (even if sharing socially) have an author bio in the third person, have a website, hire a professional editor, prepare a synopsis and a log line. The speaker also said that one doesn't need to be a member of an Association, but that it helps (she mentioned Sisters in Crime). For finding an agent, she recommended Querytracker.net. She also suggested following some blogs such as She Writes Press, Jane Friedman and Writer Beware by Victoria Strauss. Also, one should know their genre and comparable books already on the market. I took many notes, but these were some things that stood out. The speaker wasn't terribly passionate about writing, but she did offer a lot of info. Maybe something here will be helpful.
Indeed there is a lot of homework involved, which is why I put it off! I queried a little back in 2019, so I did a heap ton of research and admin then 😩 Not my favorite!
If you like anime you should see yes or yes Shingeki no Kyojin Shingeki no Kyojin (進撃の巨人, Lit. "Attack Titan")
I do indeed like Attack on Titan!! I like to binge though, so I was waiting for it all to finish up before I dive back in 😅
I wouldn't call it a noir persay, but if you're interested in stories where the femme fatale wins, I recommend Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao. It's the story of the only female Chinese emperor meets Pacific Rim.
I love her video essays so I really should check it out! Do you mean Pacific rim-ish as in mechs vs monsters though....becuase that is sadly another trope/concept I personally /caaaan't/ 😅😂
I was just thinking in terms of recouping expenses. Like $1.00 a copy. I understand your thoughts on this though.
Why don't you sell digital versions?
Because I feel out of copyright materials (aka those in public domain) should be free and easily accessible to all people regardless of their rarity or current market value. In the case of historical ephemera or textbooks published over 50 years ago, these resources are now educational material and should belong to the public at large, anybody. I also feel it is wrong to profit off of someone else collective creative work as well, I didn't draw the images, write the text, why should I get to profit off of the work of someone else simply because I found a catalog at the antique mall for example. As someone who does create content, I wouldn't want some rando charging for access to my work in 50 years, I would much rather it be free for everybody at that point.
I recommend the series of books about Ava Lee, forensic accountant, by Ian Hamilton. I know that sounds dull, but she is badass and she solves complex white-collar financial crimes. Try "The Water Rat of Wanchai" and see if you like it!
I'll definitely look into them!
I keep hearing that 'wheel of time' is pretty excellent and the people recommending it know Im not a big fantasy person. I haven't watched it I have Prime but I don't know I just don't watch hardly any TV I'd prefer to do a YouTube video and chill LOL yours are pretty much my favorite I'll take a video of anything you want to throw out Bianca - good luck with your writing I'm glad that you got something done sometimes just priming the pump will get things flowing. My dream? You write a pattern drafting book. So let's call this newest purchase research 😁
Thank you Michelle! It's pretty hard to convince me to watch something other than youtube as well so I get that!
Agreed Boba Fett was unendurably dull (which is how???) Then Mando and Grogru showed up and suddenly it was watchable :) Also, Ming Na Wen as a part robot person is just a little on the nose…. Dune the book is amazing! I read it as a pre-teen so many years ago. Then I made the mistake of reading the rest of the series :( I gave up eventually, so soured on the whole thing that I never watched any of the movies. So definitely read Dune; then stop :)
I can definitely recommend the new Dune movie for the directing/style alone 🤩 I love Denis Villeneuve in general though! Boba Fett was either dull or a B-movie children's special, and then there were the two mando eps in there which were eons better, and that made the Boba Fett feel even worse by contrast for me eeeek 😂
Help! I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of rare and obscure sewing books and I can’t get up….we have cookies http://www.survivorlibrary.com/library/basic_principles_of_designing_reproducing_and_garment_cutting_1917.pdf http://www.survivorlibrary.com/library/the_new_dressmaker_with_complete_and_fully_illustrated_instructions_1921.pdf
Considering Anna's find, I believe that the rules throughout Europe (although, Britain is no longer a part of the EU so who knows the rules there, and I live in Norway (also outside the EU) and thus I might be completly wrong about European rules) is that online purchases have a 14 day regret period. So if you contact the book store you might regate on your purchase from them. However, if you want the hard copy, that is absolutely fine aswell :) You derserve a splurge every now and again ;)
Thanks Dalana! Seeing as the book has already made it to the US and will be delivered tomorrow, and returns over the Atlantic sounds perilous, I will simply try to enjoy the book anyway 😅
I found the free pdf here: https://ap01.alma.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/delivery/61RMIT_INST:RMITU/12102924810001341?lang=en&viewerServiceCode=AlmaViewer << the pdf reader doesn't work on mobile but it does work on desktop. I've downloaded the pdf and it looks complete. For some reason (I guess diligent librarians?) Australian libraries and universities are a great resource for mid century sewing books.
Thank goodness this is at least an older edition (1936) and the one on the way to me is revised with additional diagrams (1950), because that is at least /some/ relief. Sadly I meant it, I literally didn't want to know if I had spent 300 dollars for no reason 😭
On the topic of women in noir who get away with it, have you watched The Last Seduction? The lead character is pretty unpleasant (and I haven't watched it in about 20 years so it may not have aged well) but she does walk away in the end.
I have not so I'll check it out!
The Dressmaker - Kate Winslett
Sadly I didn't click with this one and gave up watching it halfway through 😅
It's great you bought the patternbook, precisely because you think it should be in the public domain. You could always sell a PDF version for a couple of dollars next to the separate jpg files on pinterest I assume. That way you provide the service to people who don't want to spend/have the time to combine them on Pinterest, but it's still not "gatekeeping the resource". Good luck hibernating!
Thank you Malaika!
Me thinks that buying the real addition of the book was a very shrewd investment cuz it will increase in value. Works for me; hope that works for you too 😜 Sending best wishes and warm sunshine from Down Under 💚💚💚💐🇦🇺😎
Thank you Rhonda! 💚
Kill Bill!
Ha! True!
Well that sucks!!!
Indeed 😩
I spent too much time looking for it. Ebook here https://www.lulu.com/en/au/shop/f-r-morris/ladies-garment-cutting-and-making-illustrated-and-revised-edition/ebook/product-18k489de.html?page=1&pageSize=4
That was the ebook version I bought and the download doesn't work/is corrupted/won't open...so I hope I get my $ back eek!
Yay writing time!!!! Insomniacs unite! I just watched I’m your Man on Hulu and it was really good, shout-out to the costumer for some Hepburn?esque clothing choices. Need to actually sit and watch Arcane, it’s just so hard for my ADHD brain to sit still and just watch something instead of playing a video game and watching a beginner sewing video. Ghibli…..drools…. I have decided though that if I liked someone’s art/film/book etc I have to ignore the creator at times or else there will be nothing left. For example Mr Right with Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick, I really love this movie, watched it 100 times but the guy who wrote it might be total scum. Just makes me sad and angry but more people contributed to this film that just that sorry excuse for a human being so that comforts me I guess. Your black dresses and all your projects cheer me up, so you keep it up Bianca. We need decent human beings bringing some beauty into the world. Keep it up 🖤 Never apologize for buying a book….always worth it. 13 Assassins The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi Process video please as well unless it encroaches on your writing time 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Zatoichi is very, very good, but my favorite Kitano movie is DOLLS, it is just gorgeous and the costumes are TO DIE FOR.
