I think it makes perfect sense and it worked out very well for you to make the swoopy part on the bodice go across the apex. I think with us fuller busted people, things that sit above our bust line seem to make us look bulkier than we are. You did fantastic and it fit you incredibly.

I very much sympathize with "baseline sad and angry" -- my brain has those times, too. It is weird how it can be a very productive, in some ways more disciplined, time than "baseline content" brain times. I think maybe the slowdown keeps me from getting distracted, or the lack of pleasure in anything doesn't make me think I'd like anything better. Either way, my sympathies, and don't let the brain weasels get you down (too much)!

❤ It can be productive for sure! Sometimes it helps to just sew and do repetitive tasks keeping my hands busy, seeing as my brain isn't 100 percent on the rails 😅

That dress is amazing! It is so pretty. I need to get better at my pattern drafting skills to be able to do this.

Thank you Charlene!

I absolutely love this dress. It is gorgeous. And that draped shoulder piece! Can’t wait to see the butterick version and how that is different. I would also love to see a video on that most left dress on the formal gowns page. It looks as if the fabric overlaps. So interesting! https://pin.it/67cKqiw

T
The Closet Historian · March 4, 2022

Thank you Akinat! The fabric is essentially in large pintucks on that formal gown, basically pleats that face downwards and are sewn in place and ironed facing the direction desired!

Peggy Riordan · February 23, 2022

Love it!! The fabric over the shoulder in back is very chic...the whole dress is very chic! How long did it take to make this dress? Looked a little complex while drafting it. Thanks so much!

T
The Closet Historian · March 4, 2022

Thank you Peggy! This dress took me about 8 hours total maybe? Split over two days and letting the hem stretch and hang for a bit added onto that but not too bad!

Amy Sullivan · February 22, 2022

The faux scarf is beautiful ! I’m imagining this dress colour blocked in superhero colours 😃

T
The Closet Historian · February 23, 2022

Thanks Amy! It would have been a good 40's design for agent carter 😂

Margo · February 22, 2022

Absolutely lovely! The shawl in the back gives it that extra drama and you could even nestle a pin in it.

T
The Closet Historian · February 23, 2022

Thank you Margo!

Love this so much! Where do you find all these delicious iridescent fabrics? I have so little luck (that is, something other than silk)

T
The Closet Historian · February 23, 2022

Thank you Helga! Sadly as always the answer is predictable, Mood fabrics dot com 😅

A
Artemisa Rojas · February 21, 2022

I like your version better. That stole on the back of the dress gives it a majestic touch

T
The Closet Historian · February 23, 2022

Thank you Artemisa! It feels rather regal to wear which is fun!

After seeing your Instagram stories about the Butterick design without a waist seam (that diamond shape around the waist), I looked up double darts on Newspapers.com. I have done a lot of music-related research there. It's paid, but they offer a 7-day free trial so you could sign up and then do a search for "Needle Pointers" which was a column put out by The Gazette newspaper in Montreal in the 1950s. Katherine Mackenzie wrote the column and she wrote countless articles about various kinds of darts. The articles are short and have diagrams. I love the cape and the faux fur but most of all the colour of this dress. I can imagine walls this colour with midcentury modern furniture. Beautiful work!

T
The Closet Historian · February 23, 2022

Thank you Penny! Double darts simply aren't my favorite, so I have never bothered to experiment with them much, but becoming a bit of a "teacher" is forcing me to learn 😂

L
Lady Treesap · February 21, 2022

Gorgeous! The drape being an extra piece makes it so much more dramatic. Please show us the red one on that page of the Butterick catalog too. 😁

T
The Closet Historian · February 23, 2022

Thank you! The red one would be far easier on me so I certainly can sometime!!

K
Kristy Noble · February 21, 2022

I like the drap of the shawl fabric. That color is so pretty. Superiorthreads sells black thread in larger spools and it's very sturdy. I use Gutermann too because it seems to be stronger than Coats and Clark, but I was constantly running out of black too.

T
The Closet Historian · February 23, 2022

Thank you Kristy! I rush ordered two spools of black Gutermann before some snow started to hit here 😅

Loooove. So chic. And subtle. I would love to see more styling options/combos at the end of these videos cause we don’t see your hat collection integrated enough for my taste! You have the coolest hats! And gloves! This was a really cool one.

T
The Closet Historian · February 23, 2022

Thank you Barbie!

C
Clara Weber · February 21, 2022
