Asymmetric Gathered Front 1940's Rayon Dress

My favorite thing about this dress is the color, why don't I have more plum or purple in my wardrobe?! Thank you for the design style suggestion!

By the way, I love everything you do and you instructions are clear and easy to follow! Thanks for sharing your expérience!!!

I wonder if the lining of the gathered yoke was the same as the ungathered side, would it be less bulky? I am french Canadian by the way so I hope you get what I say. Furthermore, I learned we can use fabric starch to « water y » fabric so it us easier to work with. After our sewing is done, we just wash the starch away. Let me know if you find it helpful.

I don't know how I missed this when it was released, but I did, so now I am saying Wow! That's a great dress and as usual, it fits perfectly! For some reason I had great difficulty seeing some of the working on the dress, with dark on dark. I usually don't have that trouble, but at my age, my eyes don't work as well as they used too. I really liked the gathers on the bodice and it is very flattering on you. You are so lucky to have the perfect hour glass figure. Mine was rectangle when I was younger, but as I aged, the meds I needed put on 60 lbs and now I am an apple shape which is bad for every style. I could fake a waistline early on but not anymore! I would so much like to look stylish again like you do. Very chic. I think I live vicariously via your outfits...I hope you don't mind. Congrats on the dress. It looks perfect on you! Take Good Care..

Thank you Peggy! The camera had some extra trouble with this plum color too for some reason, so it wasn't just your eyes playing tricks on you!

I love this! Would the drapey bit have felt less heavy if it's lining was not gathered? I dunno, just a thought. My style is completely different to yours, but I await pattern drafting and making videos with bated breath, to see what elements i could incorporate into my own wardrobe :oD

The Closet Historian · November 3, 2021

Thank you! And yes absolutely 😂 For some reason I didn't think to use the smooth smaller side piece to line the gathered fashion fabric bit as well, which would have totally helped with the bulk!

Really love the color! Great style for you. And the hat - OMG so cute!

T

Thank you! I saw the hat up in a display case and immediately went "well, that's coming home with me..."

I absolutely adore this design and the color looks amazing on you ! It is so interesting to watch you design and draft your patterns, makes me think that it's not that difficult to do. You are such an inspiration and, as always, I appreciate your dedication and hard work!

This is indeed a beautiful dress!! I think the hard work pays off. And the fabric 😍. I was thinking... How about if you would have made the gathering only in the "fashion fabric" and not in the lining? 🤔 Now I have to make another dress, you always inspire and motivate me! And since I found your chanel and made my blocks I can't buy any dresses, where I don't think I would like it more like this or like that and end up not buying them 🤭 Thank you for that!! Now all my dresses fit waaay better and I love them all!

T
The Closet Historian · October 23, 2021

Thank you Paula! Putting the gathering only in the fashion fabric and using another of the smaller-side pieces for the lining would have been a very good idea indeed! I'm so glad to hear you are having dress success ❤ That's part of the reason I don't own many vintage dresses, because I always figure "eh...I can make one" 😅

Wow, you chose a whopper of a design for a crunch week! We do appreciate it, though. Love the color so much.

Thank you Rob! The pattern was fine...the sewing proved interesting 😂

This might be my favourite of the dresses you've made, I really like the colour and the high neckline, the spunky hat, too and your commentary is adorable. Please give the little pumpkin on the top shelf a pat for me, I really like its expression. And two wee mice? You are the best! 🐀🎃

T
The Closet Historian · October 23, 2021

Thank you Penny! I've been having fun with the Halloween decor on set 😅🎃❤

This twisted my poor little non sewer mind. I stuck it through and I will pretend I understood it. Maybe you could begin to label the Patreon videos easy, medium and complex ? A warning would be so cool. Your new HAT!!! Chartreuse! To die for!!!!! Holy heck!!! Bianca my goddess of collections, how does one properly store gloves? I don’t have a huge collection, but I have opera length leather down to little fingers less mitts. How to see them, keep them well, and do right by them? I don’t know if it is a subject for a whole video, but perhaps added to the proper way to store jewelry (plastic/celluloid can’t touch other things - I store them in silk bags and on hanging jewelry storage that has clear pocket fronts so they are separated but I can colorize them and see them. Did you have a link to the acid free hat boxes? And what about purse storage? Ring storage - I had to stop putting them into my beautiful velvet lined Art Nouveau boxes, and put them into a flat box with ring slits to keep them from getting the metal scratched or hurting softer stones. Partly because I somehow chipped a giant piece of rock crystal that is held in a gold filled art nouveau setting. There is no way I will find a matching antique piece of rock crystal of the right size. Tears fell. Thought was given on how to avoid future disasters. Any way you can advise on how you do it would be greatly appreciated!!!

T
The Closet Historian · October 23, 2021

Alas I store my gloves folded in drawers the same way as seen in my closet tour video from last year https://youtu.be/_KFK66buDOE?t=259 and my hand bag and jewelry methods can probably best be seen in the tour from after my closet clear out in spring here https://youtu.be/WMXwmwR4gsc?t=2813 I'm afraid I don't really wear rings much and only have a few, so I'm of no help there! I picked up the archival boxes from Talas and they can be found here https://www.talasonline.com/archival-storage/boxes/textile-and-clothing?page=1

Bravo! Looks great (as usual) my friend! oh... Do you know where Capt. Hook got his hook from? Why the Second Hand store of course! Cheers! T xox

Thank you Tracy! Must be next to the jewelry store where earrings cost a buck-an-ear!

The dress is beautiful, excellent work. However, I would have preferred the design with the neckline a little more pronounced in V, I think it would have favored you more. Leaving the topic, did you see the new DUNE movie? Don't miss it, it is very well done and quite faithful to the book. A big hug.

T

Thank you Artemisa! I haven't seen it yet but I am super excited too, I love Denis Villeneuve 🤩

I swear, you are absolute magic! I always learn SO MUCH from watching your videos. Even if it's a style that isn't ideal for my body shape, I love watching and learning how to do all of these techniques. Thank you for all that you do and for helping me to become a better sewer!

Love this dress, both the colour and the cut. Though if I made it I'd have to have a straight skirt. I do wear a-line skirts sometimes but I'm more likely to wear something if it has a straight skirt. Gathered or pleated skirts look horrendous on me!

T
The Closet Historian · October 23, 2021

Thank you Beverley! Plus straight skirts are much easier/nicer to have to hem which is an added bonus!

I love this design! I'm thinking I might have to recreate this one myself... Also, if you enjoy spy movies (I do too!), A Call to Spy is excellent! It's about three female spies during WWII.

I just want to say that this dress is lovely. 🥰😍 Now I want a dress like this and the color is one of my favorites. Also, the background music and your voiceover was very soothing after a long day at work. Thank you so much Bianca for your work.
