Making A Keyhole Neckline With Darts // New White Summer Dress!

This month's demo is far simpler than the more advanced things I tried last time, but has resulted in a great simple summer dress I look forward to wearing for many years to come! I'll be showing how I moved the darts up into the neckline and used them to accent a keyhole diamond shaped cutout.

I hope you are having a good month so far. I've been running a bit behind on all my projects it feels like! I've got quite a lot of sewing to do these next few weeks, and especially tonight, as I have to make a collared shirt (or two) tonight for this week's video 😅 I have managed to get that Spiegel catalog I keep mentioning scanned, so I will have a video tour of that coming out soon here on Patreon as well. Thank you so much for your support!

Happy belated birthday! I loved my 30s! Thank you for the video. Always a pleasure to watch you. I have a request for a video. I’d like to see how to incorporate a feature fabric in an otherwise solid colour dress. I got a remnant of the most lovely fabric with small white and red fans on a black background. It screams 40s to me. I think it would make an excellent feature. I think details like a yoke or collar, sleeve cuffs and maybe pocket detail. The dress is sitting in the back of my mind, but I can’t quite see it yet. I know this might sound simple but I sometimes struggle with getting the image right. Anyway appreciate all the videos. 🥂

Thank you Marie! A lot of the dresses in '40s catalogs totally make use of this sort of idea of a print mixed in. I'll be showing more collars and yokes on the channel and here on patreon soon!

What an adorable dress !!!! I can imagine that model in another color with bead embroidery that connects both triangles, it would look spectacular. Are you accepting requests for new videos;-)? Well, I'm going to take advantage. Could you develop pattern for dress B "Contrast on check or Plain", page 66 of the Montgomery Wards Spring / Summer 1941 Catalog? This type of dress is good for ladies like me, who have pear body type ( voluptuous hips and small breasts.)

T
The Closet Historian · July 23, 2021

Thank you Artemisa! I actually quite like that dress B on page 66 of the '41! I agree with your estimation on how the details would balance different figure types too, as I fear on me the bodice detailing would render me rather top heavy since I already sorta am 😅 I can totally give drafting it a try in a video! I think it would be an especially good one to demo since it covers the midriff/empire waist change and how to create a raised almost faux collar at the neckline. I'll try and film it soon!

Side note, I, too am just finishing up a white dress, well, not an actual dress, but an arrangement of the song White Dress. What a coincidence! P.S. you hit 500 patrons, another milestone!! 🍾🥂

The “birthday” dress looks great on you!!! What a pleasure to watch & listen to !!! I hope you had a wonderful birthday full of fun things you like to do and/or eat!!! My 67-yr old self derives much pleasure from looking at your beautiful creations & styling. So enjoy your birthday to the fullest!!! Wish we were all there to raise a glass of champagne & toast you!!!

Thank you Alice! There were definitely yummy treats on my birthday, I am a big fan of cookies and there were many cookies, and a bit of fabric shopping which just can't be beat 🎉

As usual, this was a very pretty dress and it looks great on you. You don't have to try to look sexy as it seems to come natural to you. I think people appreciate that more than if a person tries to look sexy. An hour glass shape, I think, is just more attractive than most shapes. Anyway....Happy Birthday and I hope your 30s are as great as mine were! I loved my thirties and I had the most fun during that decade. As I am 69 now, inside I feel 40, but my body doesn't agree! I'd like to still go out all night, but those days are over, unfortunately. That is ok though.... I have very few regrets and I hope you live your life in a way that you don't either. Take advantage of each opportunity that presents itself, giving you the opportunity to learn new things all of the time. Thanks for this video...the dress was great!! I am happy to see you make anything you want to make. I learn something new each time. Thanks again.

Thank you Peggy! I do have big hopes for my 30's being a more settled and nicer time overall in general, but I am a worrier, so I'll see how it goes 😅 More projects coming up soon!

Happy birthday! My 45th was July 6. It’s weird to me that we are 15 years apart- I still think of myself as 30. Anyway, I love the idea of submitting drafting ideas. I just popped over to Pinterest and picked out a couple of dresses I’d love to see. Not sure what year the catalogs are, but I’ll tell you what I can- wards page 39, dress c, top of page says “rayon romaine crepe.” Also love wards page 63- “wards budgeteer rayons for misses”~ the navy one in the center. They are both kind of 30’s dresses, very drapey with a cinched-in waist that is almost belted from waist to breast. That and yoked tops are something I struggle drafting. Thanks for considering our ideas- I love everything you have demonstrated so far!

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Susie! Happy 45h! 🎉 I'll have to sleuth out which catalog you mean 😅 I definitely have some designs with yokes coming up though, so hopefully those will be of use!

I hope the burn doesn't scar! I remember when I was sewing in a metal zip for the first time and tapped it with my hand right after ironing it - I had a zipper-shaped burn right on my fingertip! Thankfully it was pretty small and healed quickly, but I'm always a bit wary when ironing around metal zips now...

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Oh yeah I've definitely don't that when ironing tiny bits of metal that seem innocent until oops 😅 I have some silicone scar lotion to help with scarring...once it heals first eek!

Happy belated birthday! I crossed that threshold a couple of months ago, so welcome to the 30s club! Beautiful dress, as usual! Even this ace who dresses like a nun can appreciate the flirtiness. :p

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Dee! Happy Belated Birthday to you as well then!!

Amy Sullivan · July 21, 2021

I love the lapped zipper that you have taught me. I find it easier to do than the way I was taught and the final result is sooooo much more professional looking. Happy Birthday 🥳

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Amy! I'm glad to hear your zippers have been behaving, they are unruly creatures!

L
Lettitia · July 21, 2021

I agree with Penny, you look lovely in your white dress

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Lettitia!

White is the only colour I never use in my sewing wardrobe.. and I have probably as many dresses as you, Bianca! Happy belated Birthday!

Thank you Ronda!

Suzanne Resaul · July 21, 2021

Love this neckline. How are the 2 front tips/points held together? (Also, Happy Belated Birthday)

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Suzanne! I did actually just tack the tips together with a few tiny hand stitches, but completely forgot to mention it oops!

P
Penny Johnson · July 21, 2021

I am waving the proverbial pom-pom for this. You look lovely in your white dress!

Mel S. · July 21, 2021

Happy belated birthday! I loved my 30s (I'm in my 40s now and love that too), but my 30s will always be one of my fave decades. Love this dress with such fun detail. Always love seeing the references and inspiration, and then how you draft and bring those things to life yourself!

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Mel! ❤🎉

R
Rob Ferguson · July 21, 2021

This was a fun project to watch! Did you tack the points of the cut out together or leave it floating?

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Rob! I did indeed tack the tips together, and then forgot to mention it 😅

L
Laia Garcia Sanchez · July 21, 2021

Happy belated birthday! I'd love to see a mini video just showing how to add waist AND bust darts. I've seen videos where they add one or the other but not both, so I'd really appreciate that since my sloper is dartless.

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Laia! Is your sloper for knit fabrics perhaps? I have never seen a sloper with no darts so I am a bit confused! Usually more darts are created by splitting another in half, but having no darts at all is not something I am familiar with. I'll have a whole video about darts coming to the channel soon!

Happy Birthday! For what it's worth I've found my 30s to be way better than my 20s so far. Also WAWAK sells metal zippers that I have used for vintage repro sewing. They don't have as many colors as in nylon of course, but it's still a good source.

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Margot! 🎉 That is quite the zipper selection indeed! I'll have to try the black metal zippers when they come back in stock

My teenage mother used to get stuck with the family ironing pile back in the 50s… in the summer it was a hot job and she tried wearing a cute midriff top to see if that would be cooler. Well, dear readers, it was fine until she ironed a 6” burn across her torso :(

R
Ronda Fleming · July 21, 2021

I've done the same. Ouch!!!

N
Núria Gómez · July 20, 2021

Happy belated birthday! Love this dress, such a beautiful neckline detail. I might be incorporating it in my future plans 🖤 and yes, can’t wait for collared shirts!

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Núria! I'm just waiting on some more shirt appropriate fabric to arrive and then I've got a few I'll be making soon!

S
Swingularity · July 20, 2021

Happy belated birthday <3 . I would love to see some smaller drafting videos. Collars, sleeves, cuffs, necklines, other design accents in lieu of full project videos. I can't imagine how quickly your closet must fill up with all of the dressmaking.

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you!! ❤ Yes I think I need to grab some muslin and start doing some demos more often so my poor closet can get a break 😅

A
Ailsa Dixon · July 20, 2021

I absolutely love this dress and seersucker is my favorite...great for life in Florida. Happy birthday!

Thank you Anna! Sometimes breathable garments for the hottest days are needed 🥵

Diane T-H · July 20, 2021

I would love a tutorial on the all-in-one shoulder. I have started weaving, and I would like to make a dress. Something that uses fairly rectangular pieces of fabric that I can add darts to for shaping,

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Coming to the channel this week!

h
helen crawford · July 20, 2021

Happy Birthday!!! Hope you enjoyed your twenties because it's all downhill from here!! :P

T
The Closet Historian · July 22, 2021

Thank you Helen! Unfortunately I didn't get to "live" much in my 20's, travel, meet new people, leave the house, so for me I don't think the phrase applies!
