Peek at next week's project...

Sometimes I fear my choices might have migrated outside those befitting an entirely sane creature, but most art exists outside of one boundary or another right?

So, naturally I chose to paint the ceiling mural for the sewing parlor next. Why? Because I already owned all the paint, so in many ways it is a "free" project (which in home decor is hard to come by) and secondly, because home decor videos do better than any other kind I make over on the YouTubes, so at this point I try to regularly intersperse them amongst the rest. I also wanted a cool forest clearing ceiling mural, but that is by the by.

Now I say the project is free, but technically I am spending (burning through really) two things instead: my time, and my health, because painting a mural is tiring, but painting a mural on a ceiling is...again, I may not be all the way /sane/ okay?

I had to take an entire day away from the darn thing yesterday (Friday) because my neck/shoulder/right arm all needed a break.

Today I managed to add about a thousand leaves (not pictured). The idea is basically to get it vaguely like you're looking up through a clearing in trees, and I even added a silver crescent moon to the patch of "sky" this afternoon as well. I would say the styling takes reference from the idea of verdure tapestry cartoons, which are what the preparatory paintings for tapestry designs are called, cartoons. Seeing as the room next door is inspired by Sleeping Beauty backgrounds, it's like poetry, uh, it rhymes. (Star Wars nerds...anybody?)

I have started on a sample area of the border stenciling in one corner, and hopefully tomorrow I can take that stenciling all the way around the rest of the room. Everything else has been freehanded so far, so it will be nice to return to some extra crispy clean stenciling.

I had enough paint left from painting this room the first time to mix the initial ceiling and wall colors together into a gradient of 4 new shades, which actually took a few hours of mixing and testing to bend into my whims. Once I was happy with the scale of shades, I painted the sequential scalloping layers around the room by eye and "feel". I do kinda just start stuff and hope it will work out how it does in my head really 😅

I mean, I mock most of these things up in photoshop, but one can never really know until its on the walls, or ceiling in this case.

Still, the cutest part was that I gave myself three days in my initial scheduling to paint all this...which so far it has taken five, but who is counting?!? Me, I am. I'm hoping to have the video out on Thursday of course, but I'm always hoping for that. Hoping and managing to achieve are sadly not the same thing. Then I shall to get back to working on the next Drafting Dangerous video ❤

Thank you for your patience and support!

Whatever is ready for us will be dazzling. Thank you so much for being here and being so generous with your talent.

Thank you Holly! I may not get all of the metallic gold up for this week's video, but I'll get as far as I can whew 🥲

I subscribed for you! No matter what you're doing. I even watch your shopping and haul videos. (I am Not a shopper, not even vicariously apparently but it's worth it to listen to you talk about any of it really). That said I understand sprinkling in the stuff that brings in the Ad-cents. Also that ceiling is going to be amazing, and hopefully not Too much strain on the body. Sending best wishes.

Thank you Tiffany! I can confirm that my body is quite broken and I need a week long nap oops

Outdoing yourself per usual. There better be self-imposed orders stop the ceiling decoration for at least another six months, after this! Another flower 🌷 for the sewing— I am slowly building up the resolve to work on my sloper pattern, but have elected to circle towards it by finishing low stakes projects e.g. making garment bags. Thanks to you I got a vintage 40s rotary sewing machine years ago. And thanks to your incessant reminders, I finally changed the needle on the thing. And wouldn't you know? that simple swap fixed all my tension issues. Hah ha. I'm laughing at myself. In another 50 years I'll be at your level, but by then your skills will have become out of this world.

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

Indeed I have a one ceiling per year max and I'm already pushing it!! The magic of switching to a new needle is unquestionable, it's actually such a worthwhile investment to just stock up and burn through them for sanity sake ✨

You really need some scaffolding so you can lie on your back and paint, I bet. Like the Sistine chapel. All your home decor is just insanely gorgeous!!! Also thanks to you I just finished my first dress, which I patterned myself!!! Thank you!!

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

I actually do indeed have scaffolding, but it's too heavy to set up by myself is all. Plus I didn't move the furniture out of the room for this project, so my nimble little ladder is more flexible, even if my spine disagrees...Congrats on the dress! Good work!

Heather Gregg · August 17, 2026

I can see why the videos do well on YT, there is a dearth of actually interesting/creative/colorful interior decor videos on there.

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

I amount of Homeworthy videos I skim through to see if there is any color and then skip is most of them. Give me color!! No beige!

Such a beautiful start! Those greens really bring in the forest. I am truly enchanted by your decorating adventures. It’s a nice and inspiring side trip from fabulous fashion. I’m learning so much from watching your creative process.

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

Thank you Anne ❤️ To me decor is just another extension of creating beautiful stuff to see all around me, clothes, walls, curtains, brooches, I want to be enveloped in magic at all times!

Eek! You crazy woman! You have too much talent inside you and it just leaks out to make beauty!

Thank you Heidi! The ideas versus hours/stamina is a continuous battle as ever!

On one hand, this also gives Oliver more time to ride around on your shoulders while you're trying to get your paint on. *Giggles* I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project. I enjoy all of your creative content. Favorite projects so far, the robe inspired by Crimson Peak and your Space Queen outfits that somehow remind me of Emperor Ming from the old Flash Gordon movie. The beaded moth buddy that you keep under glass. Your lantern purse and pretty much everything from Sanctus. My all time favorite look book is Synapse. I watched it several times, shared it with friends and family, just so I could show them how they can build and wear their favorite styles head to toe, if they so choose. I'm diametrically opposed to lazy dressing. My inner maximalist nods in recognition to your maximalist self.

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

Maximalism is indeed the only way ✨ Color! Stuff! Detail!!

I enjoy all of your videos, but I really love your look books. Please do another one, or ten.

The smallest minority of viewer!! You are unique and I thank you ❤️ Unfortunately it's just not possible right now, but I hope maybe one day I can make another.

Could you get those walking lift things but instead of standing on it lay on your back. Still will strain but maybe not as much?

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

I own scaffolding but it is simply too heavy duty (weighs a ton) to set up by myself is all 🥵

Lynne Eie · August 16, 2026

You decorating is so worth the wait… but I also love the builds for a collection & the reveals that are mini-movies… which I know the set had to stay behind… but your HOME is a set now, which is fabulous… mist pouring down the staircase, green lights eerily glowing somewhere, candles in sconces… and yours are the only «decorating» videos I watch, just sayin’. (But I loves them, I do!) But I also love Drafting Dangerously! I watch!! I learn and I laugh at the wit & humor! Someday - I will sew. I really will…. but life stuff keeps getting in the way. However, sometime next year I ought to catch up on my projects and then sewing… Will Happen. (I am sewing for everyone else but myself right now!) 🫣😬😖 Altho Loved Ones get a Firm SewWorthy Status… but I have stopped taking orders. I need some serious Me Time. It will come…

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

Thank you Lynne! Unfortunately the time invested versus results for the lookbooks was never there, and I'm too afraid in this economy to actively work on videos I know will definitely bomb 😅

E
Eva Schiffer · August 16, 2026

It looks amazing so far!

T

Thank you Eva!

Chae Howard · August 16, 2026

Absolutely stunning! And as somebody who also has a very neck/back straining project, I can't recommend a TENS unit highly enough. They aren't expensive ($30-$40) and it has been the only thing to get me out of a permanent hunch. Literally life changing for me.

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

Thank you Chae! That sounds like I would have to read an instruction sheet and I am too tired 😅🤣

T
Thomas Foley · August 16, 2026

My goodness you are industrious. Perhaps consider doing this kind of work closer to the floor when you can sit and caress a cat.

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

This is truly excellent advice and Oliver supports it

A
Amie Hamilton · August 16, 2026

It took my 8 to paint the mural on the back of my bathroom door. If you can do a whole ceiling in five, that will prove your goddess level diy ability!!

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

Ha thank you Amie!

Jennifer Jordan · August 16, 2026

When getting a home contractor to to do a project, one is supposed to ad 30% to the cost. Your money is your time so maybe start the 30% rule with yourself. If you get done faster you'll feel accomplished and if you are on time you will as well. This time frame will allow for being human and needing important things like rest as well. Take care of yourself please. We look forward to seeing you and all your cool stuff. Cats are an added bonus.

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

Thank you Jennifer ❤️ I just feel like I don't "deserve" to do things at a leisurely (aka not painful) pace? Like I have to make lots, well, and fast/consistently on a schedule or of course my support and job will disappear right?! welcome to anxiety brain ✨ If I'm not perfect/productive, no one will like me, which means I get to berate myself constantly because of course...I'm not perfect. It's the trap wooo

Debra S. Apostol · August 16, 2026

Every time you paint a ceiling ‘mural’ … I can help but feel like I’m a patron of Michelangelo and you, my friend, are painting the ceiling fresco of the Sistine Chapel!!! It’s GORGEOUS … so, of course your renovation videos do so well … we are witnessing art in the making. (And Michelangelo was also a master of many mediums 😉)

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

Thank you! I do wonder if a future live/laugh girlie will hire some dude to roll white right over all of it sometime in the future 🥲

E
Elizabeth Saltmarsh · August 16, 2026

I love the idea and the execution looks like it's going to be gorgeous. That palette is giving me life ❤️ Such a gorgeous set of greens and browns.

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

Thank you Elizabeth! I need a forest of green inside, because inside has no (okay, far fewer) bugs ❤️

C
Christina Klarenbeek · August 16, 2026

I love my farm but the house that came with it is rather blah with miserly 8' ceilings - all of which were stuccoed in the 70's. I'm looking forward to the full video and feeling nostalgic about the 9'6" ceilings I left behind in a little war-time bungalow. Removing stucco would be such a mess.

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

We all must lament the decisions of the homeowners in the 1970's 🥲

Eeee! So gorgeous! Also my partner and I regularly make that reference... Which is especially funny as I write (and read) almost exclusively non-rhyming poetry.

Thank you Saoirse! Maybe Star Wars could rhyme a little less too...please oof

This is going to be incredibly cool! Also so interesting about what does well on YouTube. (I’m still looking forward to Drafting Dangerous!

Thank you! To be fair nothing I make does "real" numbers on Youtube 😅 Just look at my video view numbers versus any other creator in the niche and you can instantly understand that it is Patreon and generous folks like you that allow me to keep my job! I can never believe my luck ❤️

Thank you! I hope to make another historic ensemble in winter/spring, just got to save up for the silk 😅

S
SLAĐANA BAJIĆ · August 16, 2026

Star Wars nerd here :). 20 years ago, when I was about your age, I painted my apartment, alone, as you did. And I know how much time it consumes and how painful it can be...But result is worth it. And I have to say that your painting projects are way more complex than mine were and I never paint the ceiling in more than 1 colour. Well, when I see your work I want to repaint my ceilings :D Well, I want to redecorate the whole apartment cause your house is gorgeous!!!

Love watching these videos as they show and extension of your character and I know I'm obviously, according to the numbers, not one of the majority but I love to watch and rematch your sewing posts and Drafting Dangerously has changed my entire sewing experience- I've recommended it to so many people looking to get into drafting.

T
The Closet Historian · August 18, 2026

Thank you! I promise I'll never stop sewing, sewing and demonstrating pattern drafting are my vocation, even if home decor is more clickable on the ye old Youtubes
