I should keep a list of things while you are chatting… so many comments going through my head. Fancy tile-I saw a website from another creater, very expensive, super awesome. Will look for site. Murderbot-I saw the first two episodes (loved the show) then read all of the books in a week. So I ended up with a default Alex as voice/shape, but have heard others also pictured female versions of MB. Yes, could hear the kitty 🥰
I am v v late to the party but kept meaning to say: maybe check out engineered hardwood for your floors? In our last house, we put in hardwood, and it was great but pricey and a lot of work. In our current place, the mudroom needed an overhaul, but we aren't sure if we are staying here for the long run, so I decided to diy installation of an engineered hardwood as an in-between step. It was pretty straightforward, easy to put insulating underlayment down (cut down on squeaks and no cold toes!), and then float the floor with glued joints. Just needed a jigsaw, a coping saw, a mallet, and a bit of patience on a floor from 1854!
I actually helped put engineered hardwood in at my parents house, I helped my dad install it by choosing boards as we went, since they went for a pretty acacia and he needed my eye for mixing up the color tones between boards 😅 I would totally use in my house when it comes time for floors, I just wish somebody had some deep toned parquet de versailles of course ✨
Oh, Lady B, your content is always exciting! You may not think so, but we do. Whatever you show us, be it beautiful clothes, crafts or incredible home decor, we absolutely love and appreciate. And....gin? Ew. Margaritas!!!!
Thank you Heidi! I like a mezcal margarita, but I'm a gin gal for sure, I want everything to taste like a pine tree as much as possible 😂🌲
We bought a 1900’s house recently, but the state of it is… “suboptimal” aka tons of work to be done, but as soon as I pulled the carpets off, and I saw the lime green tiles, I just thought about you and the mock tiles you painted ❤️ Your videos are really inspiring and somehow relaxing, I’ll be joining in for the pattern drafting journey (finally doing it!) Thanks for sharing your content and knowledge, you are like therapy some days
Congratulations!! I feel you on the suboptimal choices of past owners 😬 I can't wait to tear out my 1970s trash compactor in the kitchen for example...
Oh! I love MurderBot. Martha Wells is awesome!
Have you checked out any of your local libraries yet? I imagine that upstate New York has some good ones.
Sadly I have not! Could be a good fall time cozy activity 🍂
Always happy to hear from Xander. Great input as always.
I love how you look at the world of interior design. I am completely opposite to you; I'm a minimalist. I have two tables in my living room with next to nothing on them. By the way, tile needs to be sealed when it's put in and at least every three years, so we try to keep it limited for that reason alone. Hudson and others are known as day trip places, so they do that intentionally for the tourism money. Ooh, you should check out the track in Saratoga in August, which started in 1863. Always fun!
I really like the restaurant Cantina in Saratoga Springs ✨ There are some great bookstores and little shops up there! I'm excited for the heat to die off a bit so I can browse towns properly again 🥵
If you haven’t tried Silent Pool gin, I highly recommend it. (Also the bottle is gorgeous.)
I will look out for it next time! I've got that fun Empress butterfly pea flower purple stuff in my fridge currently 😂💜
All your floor talk has made me remember my visit to Homewood House in Baltimore. I was so taken with the floors in certain rooms, that I grilled our poor docent about them. They are floorcloth. Apparently, floorcloths were very popular in the 18th and 19th Century, being used as alternatives to expensive carpeting/materials and often considered preferable in high traffic areas. As an accomplished painter, floorcloth could be a viable option for you. (You may have already rejected the floorcloth idea, but on the off chance you were interested, I thought I'd mention them, they can be absolutely gorgeous.)
I feel like cat fur plus cloth floor might be a bit much for me to keep up with, my rugs are already a magnet for the stuff! Three cats make for interesting décor considerations! 😂
Yes, Tuberculosis is one of the diseases that should now be gone. It is just terrible that such a simple one dose vaccine (BCG) is not given worldwide. The vaccine first developed in 1921. Such a dreadful disease of poverty and inequality. The treatment of active disease is the thing, the duration of the treatment (at least 6 months), and encouraging the person to complete the treatment course are the main battleground areas. I am a retired nurse, and half my working life was with a hospital respiratory team UK, this was my bread and butter as they say. (In the US ?pulmonology team perhaps)
My uncle moved to the Philippines and had trouble keeping up with his healthcare costs there after contracting TB. I think it was a pause in his treatment that was what lead to additional complications and his early passing. He had also been a longtime smoker so I'm sure that did not help. I didn't know him well unfortunately, but I felt just awful for my mom and my grandfather of course, and in general TB just shouldn't be allowed to continue when as a species we now have the means to stamp it out. I highly recommend the book!
I had the exact same feeling when I saw an image from the Murderbot series!!! I at least expected someone more androgynous.
Right?! I was like "well that's a very "man" shaped man to go with" 😂
We have a tin ceiling in our kitchen we installed ourselves with construction adhesive and brad nails. We ordered from a place in Ontario and it was fairly reasonable… 10 years ago There’s also the option of anaglypta wallpaper which might be cheaper than the tiles
I feel like either way I will have to be brave! What does it say about me that I'd almost just rather stencil the ceiling to /look/ like subtly patterned tin? 😂 I like suffering?!?
I have a question, wallpaper…. peel and stick, pasted or not pasted? I have never done it. I found a paper I cannot live without from Bradbury and Bradbury. I need insight!!
Anything but peel and stick!! Peel and stick is evil, becuase it stretches due to just being vinyl, so if you have to reposition it, sure it comes off and you can try again...but the odds it will have stretched jjjuuust enough to never line up properly again are high...ask me how I know 😫 I tried it in my cat
I’m so pleased you had a full day off. I totally agree with your reading picks. Re Murderbot TV show, I made the mistake of rereading all the books before watching. I, like you, thought of the organic parts of Murderbot as female, but got over that. What I didn’t get over without some major distance between reading and watching was how drastically different the plot (and some of the characterisation) was in the TV show from the books. It’s a completely different story, set in a similar world. Still enjoyable, but not the same thing at all.
Thank you Elinor! Yeah I think I'll be skipping the show, my favorite part is being in dry little murderbots' head, I don't really care about the regular humans sorry pals 🤣
So exciting to hear you also enjoy Murderbot. I love it so much. I watched the show and while I also imagined Murderbot as female-ish I enjoyed Skarsgard's portrayal. There were a lot of differences but that's the book to show process I guess. I've finally started working on fitting a bodice block so Drafting Dangerous is perfect timing for me 😁 Enjoy your writing and reading time! I also get a rush of good feelings from writing, it's like I'm feeding my soul ❤️
Thank you Sarah! I literally feel like my serotonin levels go up markedly just by spending a day writing, it's almost absurd. I wish I could do a study and actually just do a hormone sample of some kind before and after a full day writing 😂
Wonderful purrs! I know lots of cosplayers use ducttape and plastic wrap to make patterns for corsets. I wonder if it would work to construct a bodice block? Would it be easier or harder than drafting? Getting a well-fitted block was SO HARD. It took 7 tries.
Ehhh personally I am not a fan of duct-tape forms or patterns. To me it just seems lumpy and messy and too easy to pull to0 hard and compress the body where you don't mean to, or make it too loose where you wouldn't want to either. Time better spent learning to draft I say!
Wait, lavender seltzer water? Where do you source that? Or do you make it? Recipe please.
There is a brand called DRY that make it, but I have also used lavender simple syrup with plain seltzer water and can confirm it is tasty! https://www.amazon.com/DRY-Sparkling-Non-Alcoholic-Botanical-Ingredients
That was some pretty loud purring! I did some tile work when I was younger. It’s not hard, but it is better as a two person job - one on the floor and one standing. The standing person cuts tiles, mixes mortar, and hands you stuff.
I feel like I can probably rope my dad into helping me as long as I, as the younger human, am doing all the work on the floor 🤣
Please don't be insecure about your book. It is captivating and very well crafted. I still think about your characters and wonder about their futures...emotionally invested. I also think about something you said once that now guides my painting journey..."Don't be afraid to kill your darlings." (Side note: your influence goes well beyond pattern drafting.) Enjoy your time reveling in your dreams coming true. You've worked hard and earned every bit of it.
Thank you so much Denise, you can't know how much this message meant to me ❤ I have been editing some stuff this week and killed a few entire paragraphs of darlings, but it's always better, even if it takes time to accept having to make changes!
Great to hear you had a great time with your family. With regard to tiles... in the UK at least there are some amazing vinyl floorings which mimic Victorian tiled flooring. Maybe there is something similar in the US? With regard to your washer and dryer hook ups, as whatever you do is likely to be temporary, you can get extensions for the water inlets, outlets and electrics which you can easily install yourself. We moved our washing machine from our kitchen to our lean-to with simple extension pipes rather than new plumbed in copper pipes. It's been working very well for the last 5 years 😊😊
Thank you Sam! I should really just wait to move the washer and dryer until I can afford to get stacked machines too, but the desire to have them more out of the way is so stronnnnng 😅
i’m sure you’ve seen this — vintagetileshop on IG. they carry deadstock. while the only encaustic tile they have is trim— still might be a good source to reach out to in the future to help you track down the tile you want stateside and also— architectural salvage! should be a number of places to check out
Alas I am not math brain enough to figure out how to make salvaged tile work, I'm more like "order 3 boxes extra and hope for the best' chaotic 🤣
Black Friday is the only time blinds and electric blinds go on sale. 50% off!! Every time I need blinds for a new room I wait!!! Lowe’s and blind manufacturers have the sales.
*Yay* murderbot! I had similar imaginings to you of Murderbot (female until I realized it had no gender). Thus my take for the show is that it shouldn't be gendered, but if it is played by a gendered actor that actor shouldn't be a dude and definitely not a Skarsgard. Going to be hard to get over for sure.
I was very confused! I think I'll stick to the books becuase I like being in murderbot's head 😂
I am fully supportive of having a fridge just to chill gin.
Hard same <3
Thanks for the update! So happy you got to visit with your family. I am so stoked for the new pattern drafting series! My heart lit up when I saw the introduction on YouTube. Take care and enjoy your rest day! 🖤🐝💛
Love this. I'm so excited for the upcoming drafting series! Also excited for the patreon video this month - I think I may even know what jacket pattern you're talking about. I'm hoping to make a cape this fall with like a criss cross front, I haven't seen you make anything like that on the channel before but if you have can you point me to it?
Hi Hailey, hope you're well! American Duchess has a front wrap cape pattern for free on their website. There are plenty of blogs available about sizing it up for full-bust adjustments and scaling up the pattern in photoshop to print it out to scale. I made 2 of them, and it was fairly quick and easy. On IG I believe it's #adcapecult for people who have made the pattern and tagged it. Personally not on social media much, but there are plenty of wonderful examples of this pattern out there for inspiration. Hope it's somewhat helpful! https://www.americanduchess.com/products/wrap-cape-free-pattern-pdf?srsltid=AfmBOooMLFWk3tZ7klgaYm8Xj8rwdQqo-rIIYnGw8hoGcNCOU-LJgmQo
Can’t hear the ac at all. Enjoy it!
