The swoopy settee ✨

I mentioned in my last video that I spent a bit of time last week acquiring a Victorian (style? no idea if it is repro or old-old) settee for a super deal and then didn't show you, which just feels rude. So here is the swoopy buddy in all its dusty glory! It will need to be cleaned for now and reupholstered eventually, but aren't the lines pretty? I had to go back for it 😅❤️ It's also very low to the ground, so maybe it will need an extra foot situation or something. I'm new to furniture okay!

Also in related updates, I am supposed to go to the bank this week to discuss pre-qualification mortgagey things to figure out the exact range of how my budget can stretch. Mostly because I saw a very cute Queen Anne with a turret that's just a /little/ more than I can swing down payment wise.

Also thank you for your feedback on the last video. I think I'm just in a bit of a weird place right now trying to balance making things vs. teaching, but with some planning and refocusing I think I'll be back on track soon. Thanks for your patience with me!

Please let us know how the upholstery project goes. I have a Victorian fainting couch that needs a glow up. There are several Queen Annes available in my neighborhood so shoot me a DM if you’d like more info!

Ooh lovely swoops! Just a tiny word of caution - don't overstretch yourself as interest rates can go up as well as down. I'm sure your mortgage advisor will say the same thing! Our last fixed 5 year mortgage has just been renegotiated and the interest rates now have doubled the monthly cost - of course we have also had the benefit of a lower payment for a couple of years. If you're anything like us and various friends the first few years of a new house are the most expensive so take care with stretching yourself too thin initially. But turrets can be hard to resist....! Enjoy your finding out on your new adventure.

Good luck! I hope you can somehow swing the Queen Anne, a remade somewhat goth-y old house is perfect! And a fundraiser is a great idea. I'd love to help a little.

Just a thought, since down payments and home improvements are more expensive than I ever realized before I bought our home, a bit extra cash is so nice. Patrons would love to support that, especially if it's an easy, one time thing. Just an idea: if you need a bit more for a dream down payment... raffle? Like... buy tickets to win a Patreon upgrade for a year? Like, $1 tickets? That feels easy to spend a one time $10 donation/ticket purchase and if it bumps up my Patreon access for a year, that's a really neat thing to put my money towards. I feel like winning a piece from a collection (that you'd probably be selling before the move, which also takes time to do a good listing on your Etsy) instead of Patreon upgrade is a neat thing too. Just ideas and good luck.

That is a great couch. I can see it in deep bottle green, or midnight blue velvet and scattered with complementary cushions for you to recline on. A carefully shaken Manhattan with shaved ice sitting on the small side table next to a Tiffany lamp.

Fingers crossed for you. Houses in Australia are so expensive that I can only afford a unit!

Oooh, it's gorgeous!! If it's low, then I can see it at the foot of a giant bed in an oversized victorian bedroom. Perfect for lounging on in the evenings! (so excited for your house-buying journey too btw).

Ooh very nice condition. If you have one of those mini wet vacs for pet owners, they do a good job on upholstery too. I love mine. Good luck with the bank!

Gorgeous! Consider reupholstering it when you’re at your new place. So many amazing upholstery fabrics to choose from. Love it!

Lovely! Re-upholsterey is do-able. Fabric, patience, time and staples. LOTS of staples 😁

Thats an amazing settee, really l9ve the lines. What colour are you hoping to have it reupholstered? And are you going to attempt it yourself?

Prabably some shade of green, I love green 😅 It all depends on what room I end up using it in!

The settee is beautiful! I think restoration and upholstery of older furniture is really fun. Have fun bringing new life to her.

R
Robyn Bayles · July 29, 2024

Oh she's stunning! If you're lucky there'll be a brand/maker name on the bottom somewhere. I recently refurbished one from the 1920's or 30s that was found by my paternal grandfather in the 60s, and given to my maternal grandmother, who refinished it in the 70's. My mum gave it to me after she fell & broke it, so I carved a new back (since grandma was cheap and used pine when she redid it) based on Glasgow School roses (my fave). (rambling, sorry, just very excited about everything for you! Good luck at the bank!)

I would say it’s a fifties reproduction, but it’s just a hunch.

It’s a beautiful settee! And I hope that conversation goes well
