I personally headcanon Sora from Kingdom Hearts as on the spectrum
My partner is autistic This should be actually kind of helpful for me. So I'm trying to learn as I go thanks man
Characters on the Spectrum would be really interesting
I so find the characters on the spectrum list interesting at least for now i couldnt exactly relate to any i (canonically) know of but i do have one that i made myself for my fictional story that is more based of of me that i love dearly
Since you were talking about autism related stuff it seems only fitting to talk about characters who are canonically one socrurm I love hearing your perspective in the topic since I like learning about autism and seeing various takes on ASD. The irony of being autistic while having a slight fixation on autism is not lost on me XD
I was worried that I was gonna vote for one and it was gonna be the one with the least amount of votes, but wow I'm glad many others also wanna see you talk about autistic characters in media! I wanna mention that Rebecca Sugar has said that all Gems in Steven Universe are neurodivergent, so I think any Gem is viable to discuss as being autistic, though the one most popularly associated with it is Peridot. Here are a couple of other notable examples: - Maxwell Atoms is autistic and has said that Billy and Mandy are both on the spectrum. - Jorge Gutierrez is autistic as well, having publicly said that he considers all his characters to be autistic. - Dan Harmon is undiagnosed but has said he believes himself to be autistic, and connected to that, Rick Sanchez from Rick and Morty have both been confirmed as autistic (and Abed from Community, but I'm focused more on cartoons)
Hey sorry for not talking sooner I got distracted on stuff
You're all good Tristen :) You talk as much or as little as you like here :)
i voted for characters on the spectrum and would like to suggest the manga/anime Komi Can't Communicate
Would Cartoon characters include anime like Rina from Love Live Nijisaki or Shiki from Love Live Superstar?
I'll definitely have to put a cap on not including anime characters as it's been half the characters! 😄 We might leave the anime characters to Robyn as they're not really my expertise
I am actually interested in seeing how the subject of Autism is dealt with in more modern media. I know when I was growing up in the 2000s, Autistic characters in kids media was non-existent, and when they appeared in adult media they either fell into the stereotype of the "rude genius" or the story would focus on the parent(s) of a severely developmentally disabled child considering the child to be a burden. When we got into the 2010s, I felt like some progress was made, but confirmed Autistic characters still largely fell into stereotypes and there were too few of them. I hope in recent years things have gotten better. If there had been any positive representations of people with Autism when I was a kid, I don't think it would have fixed everything that I faced in terms of my disability, but it might have helped me understand myself a little better and maybe even helped me view myself and the world in a more positive light. This seems to be getting a lot of support in the poll, and I hope to take that as a sign that progress has been made and we'll be hearing about it real soon! 🙂
A few examples of characters in media many fans interpret as members of the autism community include Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers, Judah from BoJack Horseman, Dipper and Mabel from Gravity Falls, Twilight Sparkle from MLP, Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons, Star Butterfly from Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and Harold and Mike from Total Drama. Those are just a few suggestions. You can use whomever you wish.
I’d love to hear your opinion on certain characters on the spectrum :)
For cartoon characters on the spectrum, can we also talk about characters that might be on the spectrum but not confirmed. I feel like Nightshade from transformers earthspark is a great example of that.
I'll mention one cartoon episode that has bad representation and one cartoon episode that has good representation. The proud family louder and prouder episode Bebe is bad and insulting, in Xavier Riddle & the Secret Museum episode I am Temple Grandin is good representation and features a character who is based of off a real person
I know Eore would be in the cartoon grp...ive heard that each character in Winnie the Pooh has something different i.e Tigger is supposed to be ADHD... I found that to be so interesting especially because I never really looked that deep into the cartoon, but now as an adult I can see it.
I am curious about what characters could or are on the spectrum. in my opinion, 2 famous detectives from British Mystery novels turned movie and TV characters could be on the spectrum, specifically Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Peroit. They really come across as such to me, especially with their quirky habits and preferences
I voted autistic characters but lowkey the Movies I hate that others like option is calling to me
There the Nora from Dead End Paranormal Park whose confirmed by the creator of show to Autistic There's also June from Ghost and Molly McGee who also autistic I think Reagan Ridley from Inside Job is also autistic
Maybe a suggestion but maybe after the autism video you could do a video about disabled characters in media and what I think about it for example there's a character in Paw Patrol called Rex who is in a wheelchair and in the first episode they actually acknowledged it and ask him about it
I would want to get the opinion of a person with a physical handicap for that almost certainly 🙂Someone actually in a wheelchair as I think they would give the most knowledgable opinion on it.
Ohhhh, all of these sound really fun and interesting, hard choice!
Will be happy with any choice but still keen to see « best worst modern fad foods » from the earlier poll.
Favorite movies I don't talk about: Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (with the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton) I just had a conversation about this a few minutes ago. It is a terrible terrible movie, but I've watched it about 10,000 times just cause Peter Frampton is so insanely adorable.
And the music is SO good!
I never go online to look up movies anymore 'cause I don't like to see what critic scores they get, it sways my opinion.
Totally wanna know the movies you hate vs the movies you like that aren't in the majority, 'cause there are so many instances of me enjoying a movie, and then going online to see how it was panned and stuff.
I would love to hear about Autistic characters
yeah i'm interested to hear his thoughts on Hank Hill and Phillip J Fry
As someone who is on the spectrum themselves, I would love to hear what you thought of Entrapta from Netflix’s She-Ra (who was my first exposure to a fully confirmed Autistic rep and my personal favorite as well)!
If you go through with the autism one and you put SpongeBob on the list, I would not be surprised 😆
Spongey will be most certainly be there 😄
Man they are all good like usual. But as I'm also on the spectrum I'd like to hear your opinions on autistic cartoon characters.
Wait do you mean confirmed autistic or autistic coded
Both 🙂
I'm not neurodivergent, but I'd like to hear thoughts on how well various shows do at acckrate, noninsulting portrayals. I could rant about portrayals of blind people all day, so...
Eee! The autistic coded one's an option! Doesn't matter if it gets selected I'm just glad it's an option 😃
Being ADHD and Autistic myself, hearing your thoughts on autistic rep in shows and movies sounds fun
Favorite Halloween episodes of cartoons.
I have one other suggestion. Top 5 Best/Worst Animated Batman Movies
