The Biggest Myths of Autism Debunked (Patron vid)

Howdy boss :) I had some requests to discuss this topic so Nin and I looked through the many myths of Autism spectrum. Please feel free to discuss your own thoughts or experiences. This is a safe space. Also, I found some really awesome artistic variations of the infinity rainbow. Very cool.

Anti-vaxxers are a Strange lot. It's been my experience that each individual might just have different reactions to different vaccines. For instance, I can't have the flu vaccine because that is the only way that I can get the flu.

Hi Strider! You don't have to answer this if you don't want to, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on Autism Speaks. It's a very controversial organization and I'd like to hear your opinions on it from somebody actually on the spectrum. Also out of curiosity, what stage on the spectrum are you?

J
Josh Strider · November 28, 2024

Hi egc :) I'm probably level 1 autism but there's days (like yesterday) where I felt cognitively exhausted and felt level 2 😆 As for Autism speaks, I dislike them and how they present autism. They annoy me that same way Atypical's main character does. Everything I've heard about them has been terrible. But we don't have them in Australia so I forgot to address them. Thanks for asking 😀

I think that it's great you're going over this! I'm not on the spectrum, but my older brother is, and I have relatives and friends who are on the spectrum as well. It is important to talk about these misconceptions and educate people on what autism is like, and how it's diagnosed. My brother and the other people I know who are on the spectrum are some of the most kind, intelligent people I've ever met, and I'm always willing to learn more about how I can support them. My brother is very fortunate to have a great support system around him, which helped him land a stable full-time job! He contributes so much to his family, friends, and place of employment, and I love him more than he may know. Cheers!

Regarding sarcasm, many autistic people I know understand and can make the funniest sarcastic comments, but when you say the same sarcastic joke, they usually have trouble recognizing the cues that make the joke “work.” They understand sarcasm but may have trouble catching the cues delivered to them. Just my observation. Also, thank you for another amazing video!

J
Josh Strider · October 11, 2024

Hiya Red Pandar 😀 Yeah I found particularly in school I sometimes missed the sarcasm cues. It actually helps that I found sarcasm was used alot more in the 90's-2000's than nowadays 😄

A great informative video! I love ones like this that really help highlight what autism is like. When you started talking about the controversy of the puzzle piece imaginary, I immediately thought of Autism Speaks. It's one of the largest non-profit organizations in the US, and is supposedly all about increasing Autism awareness and support. But many of their approaches have seemed to do more harm than good in that they promote some of the bigger stereotypes. You're probably not in for a good time if you go to look up some of the controversy surrounding them. And they use a puzzle piece for their logo. Which is probably why you received some backlash when you ran the survey you mentioned in your video. The puzzle logo carries a lot of negative connotations in the states, because of the organization. It's all really unfortunate. I really hope to see more videos like yours, and hope it at least makes some small changes in how others view those with Autism or might be on the spectrum themselves. Keep doing what you do!

Loved this video. Me and most of my siblings are on the spectrum. My younger brother who was diagnosed as a child was listening and like you, was very annoyed at a lot of the myths, especially the vaccine one.

My oldest son that is now 29 had much going on w/ him. He had ADHD, ODD, he was paranoid w/ other things, but he was about 10/11 before he was diagnosed to be on the spectrum. So you definitely Can't put a definitive finger on this because its going to vary from person to person w/ on top of that different other things like a Certain level of healthcare available, parent(s) & others support if you think something is wrong Taking it serious etc. To many to list so I'm so pleased to see this post you & Nin made. The fact that its finally recognized & talked about more is great. As you can see everyone has different aspects of being on the spectrum so to know that you guys are really putting a focus on it & debucking a lot of the myths is refreshing. 💜💙🙏🏾🤗

Hey guys ... im the ND lead for a charity here in the UK. I'm diagnosed with ADD and GAD ( and in all honesty im probabily on the spectrum ). I just want to say that was a joy to watch , it was so well thorght out and addressed the myths in a straight forward and honest way. You should create educational videos to sell to companies.

I just finished watching and it was able to get me out of my depressive rut for 40 minutes. I hope this passes soon, but at least I have your videos to keep me company. ^_^

A
Alek Parkinson · October 4, 2024

I've been there. I don't know your circumstances, but depression and ruts always pass eventually, so don't give up. I Hope it gets better for you ✌️🙂

I just watched this video on the TV with my 16 year old daughter (Diagnosed Asperger's/AuSpec and Schizophrenia) And it made her really happy. She thinks you did an amazing job and appreciates it.

J
Josh Strider · October 5, 2024

That's wonderful to me if we could be helpful or at least a second perspective Millie 😀 It was nice to chat and debunk some of the myths a bit and get the perspective of both myself on the spectrum and nin whose a support worker for many people on the spectrum. Much respects and well wishes to you and your daughter, Millie.

In the UK I don't know about other countries but function labels/levels are being phased out, they're no longer listed under ICD-11, cos an autistic person's level of struggle can vary so much through their life depending on burn out, stress level, hormone levels etc. and there is so many aspects of autism that people can excell at one and be crippled by another and present so differently to someone else who thrives at another one and really affected by another, this is new way of thinking prioritises the person and their specific needs rather then just treating them based on their supposed 'level of function' and also it's been realised those we used to consider to be 'low functioning autistic' actually had a co-morbid learning disability or other disability and not just autism, I think its a really positive step forward for autism research😁

This is amazing as someone with Autism more people need to learn about our weirdness and quirks

M
Monique Star · October 3, 2024

I think I constantly learn that autism is more than just a word and this is one of the ways of learning that. Your post is much appreciated

Very important subject, my Lil brother has autism and it upsets me all the time when people look at that as a disease or something you can get from a vaccine, it's just ridiculous

I'm not autistic, but I do have Major Depressive Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, and Schizoid Personality Disorder all wrapped up in a tender flaky crust of PTSD.

J
Josh Strider · October 4, 2024

I'm sorry you have had to go through that Jeff. I have experience with generalised anxiety and it can be very exhausting. I hope you're at least able to find friends and support you can talk to when you're struggling. That's what has helped me alot over the years personally.

M
MasterUltraBall · October 3, 2024

This video has been very informative for me as someone who is also on the spectrum as there are some aspects that I never knew were actually myths (specifically with interests and being somewhat anti-social). I've taken those points as fact due to having it hammered in my understanding from my youth, and it's carried over into adulthood. And some of these myths I'm all too familiar with that truly get under my skin 😔

M
MasterUltraBall · October 3, 2024

It's especially infuriating to me when people treat our disability as a disease. You can't "cure" a disability. I hope some day we can truly get that across more people.

I’m an Aspie, even though we can’t call ourselves that anymore but I digress. I actually self published a time travel Woodstock coming of age romance novel on Kindle where the main character is based off of me and my experiences. The title is Do Electric Seacows Dream of Moonfish? Message me somewhere since I can send you the pdf for free if you’re interested! https://a.co/d/evba8SQ

For the longest time, doctors and psychiatrists kept saying I had Bipolar or some kind of unspecified mood disorder, and I wasn't able to get diagnosed with ANYTHING until I was about 23 years old. When I was younger (especially in my school days) I was often persecuted for things I did that I thought were normal (leading to people trying to suppress my behaviors), and that caused me a lot of depression and anxiety by making me wonder what the heck was wrong with me. I can only imagine how much easier my childhood and teen years would've been if I was given the correct treatment. But I'm thankful for the life I have right now, I guess. No sense in holding grudges about the past. Forgive and move on 👍

A
Alek Parkinson · October 3, 2024

Yeah, I have no reason why autism is "so confusing" and stuff to people. Having it myself, as well as my brother and Dad (my Dad hasn't been officially diagnosed, but we're pretty sure he has it too), and also a number of close friends over the years, it's not as mysterious and confusing as people seem to think. I remember when I first got diagnosed and how many questions it answered for my life. I finally realized why certain things were so difficult to need compared to others, and why my quirks were weird to some people. Like makes so much more sense when I live it the way my brain is happy with living it, and I'm very thankful to have a wife who loves me for I am and loves my quirks and stuff; she understands me (like Nin with you).

Had a long comment typed in and accidentally refreshed the page. (Blah!) while I don’t know much about autism (good reason to watch the video, right?!) I can relate to having issues of the mind that can effect our everyday lives. (addiction and bigorexia/muscle dysmorphia) I do feel for people with autism..since it seems to be a trend these days for people to pretend to have mental disabilities to be “quirky.” Or “I don’t like sports and I’m awkward in social situations so I must have autism!” I don’t have it myself that I’m aware of, but I do sympathize with anyone going through a mental health issue.

I found I'm on the spectrum, but never got diagnosed until after college. Masking is very much a thing and apparently I'm good at it

I'm autistic and like you because you're autistic too. I'm very glad you're covering it. Like you I had multiple diagnosis before autism such as ADHD and sensory processing disorder, with my autism diagnosis being delayed from 3 to 10
