Bonus Episode: Satanic-Ass Panic
Another "by popular demand" episode! After an avalanche of requests (including some from "real" media outlets), we decided to dive into the controversy over Lil Nas X's "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)." Along the way we find excuses to discuss Dr. Seuss, TikTok teens and (at length!) last summer's WAP vs Ben Shapiro scuttlebutt.
We also talk about Sarah's "Nightline"/"Good Morning America" segment! We're thrilled to see this sort of debunkery getting a bigger audience.
Here's instructions on how to access this episode. As always, let us know in the comments about other controversies, musical or otherwise, we should cover on the next bonus episode.

Welcome to you're wrong about, the podcast where you can call me by your name or call me Al
Every time I hear that clip of BS you can hear how clearly he is BUZZING to say the word whore. Can’t bring himself to say pussy but whore, totally fine.
This was a really interesting episode for me, because on the one hand I 100% agree that it’s fine for Lil Nas X to hire an actor to play Satan and give him a lap dance, but on the other hand I’m still Protestant enough to absolutely agree with the preacher who said “Satan is real and you shouldn’t fuck around with him, lest you find out.” Like, he’s Satan, not Beetlejuice, and I’m not scared of a music video, but also, no, I absolutely do not want my palm read or any such shit, absolutely not.
Fascinating
WOW to how relevant the very end of this episode is (the commentary on self defense, and everything else after that) in the wake of the Kyle Rittenhouse Trial. Finding little jewels of wisdom like this makes me especially sad that Sarah and Mike aren’t doing the show together anymore :(
Mike from the way you describe yourself i had been picturing you as maybe 5”1 until the end of this episode when i found out you’re 5”7?!
surely someone else said something but the way mike said mise en scene broke me
As a long time fan, I am thankful to know that logic may not be represented widely, but still exists.
LMAO when you brought up Dennis from IASIP I knew EXACTLY what you were talking about Sarah 😂
Please please please do an episode about NXIVM! It was that sex cult with the branding and Allison Mack from Smallville. It didn’t dissolve until 2017!!
No! You're just trolling us now, Mr. Hobbes. Mize en scene??
Hold on, slow down, I need to take notes on these daffodil codes. 😂
Hi Sarah and Michael, do you think the current national reaction to critical race theory (mostly by people who probably don't even understand it) is a moral panic? It seems like that to me. I don't remember little old ladies in rural counties showing up to school board meetings to complain about Judith Butler and feminist/gender theory. Hoping you'll consider talking about this
Thanks Katie, i was wondering the same
Thanks Katie! I don’t Twitter and was getting worried!
Where are you guys?
Hey does anyone know when more episodes will be out? Not sure if I missed any new info about them taking a break but really missing this podcast atm!
They posted on Twitter that they would be taking a break for the month. :)
Two things real quick The press hacked Milly dowler's phone not her parents so not only were they (the new of the world) hacking celebrities they were hacking the voicemail of an actual dead girl who then they didn't realise she was dead because her voicemail was being accessed. They categorically hindered the case finding her by making it seem that she was checking her voicemail. I grew up really close to where they found her remains and my Dad work for the same police force plus it she has was found in the same words that I went to go to school in so these kind of things really stick. The second thing is Prince Philip could have a bad day and b e hugely offence but it was "funny" because he was a slightly eccentric racist old white dude who looks like a white raisins but the expectations of Megan would have been so much higher because she wasn't an old raisin man.
Please consider covering Sinéad O'Connor and her new book!
Just echoing what everyone has already said! I’d love your take on the Sons of Sam doc. Major satanic panic stuff (also snuff films?? Seriously this podcast made me weirdly prepared to not fall down this rabbit hole of a doc!) 😂
I just want to say I love you guys. I became a Patreon the day I realized that when I listen to you two, it feels like I am with with friends. Thank you for bringing all the enthusiasm to each episode on cool subjects. The world never feels boring when I listen to you two. And it honestly feels a little nicer knowing people like you two exist. I think you’re genuinely amazing humans!
Sinead O Connor
I’m currently watching the Son of Sam documentary on Netflix about Maury Terry’s investigation of David Berkowitz and his book about satanic rituals. I feel like y’all would do an amazing (and OJ-level analysis) episode delving into this!!
Where's the Monday episode?! I need my fix
Their twitter says they are taking the month off (sad face but also good for them! I GUESS)
I’ve been thinking a lot about GRID (the original name of HIV/AIDS) and the panic that surrounded it. There’s not much I could find about it the early “GRID” panic. I’d love to see that covered, especially after the past year with another novel virus. Regardless, I’ll listen to anything you guys upload! 💕
Bro have y’all watched the new Netflix documentary called the sons of Sam?! It’s got satanic panic written all over it and I spent the entire time arguing with my boyfriend about how this is bullshit because all the evidence is rooted in the satanic panic. I would LOVE to hear you talk about it!
I just sent this through messages (although I have no idea how this platform works and I might have just messaged a random person about Courtney Stodden) but please do an episode about Courtney Stodden and the crazy unfair treatment they received as a teenager (and today)!!
Sarah! Michael! Pls watch Netflix’s new doco re son of Sam and get angry with me!!!!!!!!
Came here to say this
I know this is from a long-ass time ago, but this Li’l Nas X episode got me thinking about your disco demolition episode. Did either of you happen to come across Mitchell Morris’s The Persistence of Sentiment: Display and Feeling in 1970s pop music? It’s got some maligned women and unjustly discarded music and also gayness.
From my current town, https://www.lcsun-news.com/story/news/crime/2021/05/11/satanic-ritual-frenzy-after-dead-goats-found-el-paso-texas-desert/5039974001/?cid=facebook_Las_Cruces_Sun-News&fbclid=IwAR2NOmV_vnTLC5x6VrHHYJgDNm2fQ101WrNd3SwdpqEvhHk0uty4MQT11U8
i would love to hear your thoughts on the theory that david berkowitz was in a satanic murder cult??? i don’t know what to believe from this netflix thing
I'm on the second episode of "Sons of Sam" yelling: "I wish Sarah was here!" I need a voice of reason.
I feel you!!! The whole time I’m like maybe...or maybe he’s just schizophrenic (which he is)
You're wrong about Tina Turner and her amazing career, POST-"Ike" ... Please? 180K attended her music concert in Brazil in the 80s. Come on, Sarah! It's a woman who is more than her 'victimization' - it is THE story of redemption. A BLACK woman, dogged by a sexist racist media ("Why didn't you leave Ike?" and other stupid journalist faux pas) - who, in her 40s, during Reagan's America - is succeeding?? After Ike, the transformation of her sound and all the icky journalism she faced, and the redemption. The music, the acting, the sensuality, the racist and sexist media coverage (heh surprise, media in the 80s was incredibly racist and segregated and sexist), the concerts, the HAIR , the outfits, her blackness and indigeneity -- and yet, she wasn't quite accepted by the Black community in the 80s . . . Think of 'the children'.
Sons of Sam is completely unhinged Satanic Panic stuff.
^^ I'm hoping Y'all can take a look at this "doc".
i would love to hear you cover joan rivers and the johnny carson ban
I call the art/cultural movement of absurdist memes and shit posts driven by genZ “Dada-daddyism”
http://www.randomhousebooks.com/books/92206/ I saw this book come up in thriftbooks.com (I like to browse old true crime) and I immediately thought of You're Wrong About.
Omg. Sons of Sam "docuseries" that just dropped on Netflix. Satanic Panic aaaalll over the place.
this ia a fun message for sarah that has nothing to do with lil nas but: i am proud to say that gen zers have a special place for tonya harding in their hearts!! she is finally getting credit she deserves :)
I love Paul Simon! <3
I'd love to know more about the concept of 'moral panic' I was wondering if you could suggest any introductory reading on it? I'm considering applying it in my postgrad dissertation on postwar west germany
Can I just say that I’m so glad I’m not the only person who avoids scary movies?? And haunted houses too like why would I pay to be terrified? It just doesn’t do it for me
Just listened to the chick's ep. As a non American, I'd LOVE to hear an ep about the weird cult like American patriotism that seems to be built into the population from birth, through all of their schooling, and then turns into this weird thing that consumes ppl. It's seen by the rest of the world the same way as an obsessed mother of her baby boy that can do NO wrong. I find it very odd, and would love to hear how it got intertwined in everybaspect of the American culture.
YES!! So insane as an Australian.
LegalEagle on YouTube talked about the lawsuit that Nike lodge against the shoes. He pointed out that the shoe alterations were the exact opposite of alterations that a Christian site were selling. The christian site sold the white shoe, with a crucifix on the laces, and supposedly with Holy Water in the pumps...and (surprise surprise) NO ONE CARED!!! I admit that I’m a total weirdo because I am a medical scientist by trade, don’t believe in organised religion, but I’m Christian and practicing privately is a big part of my life. I believe “love thy neighbour” and “let your conscience guide you” above all else, and that if God is able to appreciate the beauty of the Sistine Chapel, then he would equally appreciate this beautiful, and complex video.
A full episode on Jon Delorean and his acquitall would be awesome. Federal prosecution conviction rate is like 97%. That verdict is a unicorn.
Catching up on episodes I skipped and on Pinto - thinking you all should bump up that Johnny Carson book club/episode since he just came up in the sister podcast Maintenance Phase!
An episode about the Salem Witch Trials would be cool!
A great idea for "Maintenance Phase" or "YWA" from the "Extremes" podcast - the hell of a 2-year virtually no-fat diet while sealed inside Biosphere 2. Psychological/physiological impact also fascinating.
"There are 39 year old millennials who are sitting around feeling horse-whipped about their parents expectations of them." Sarah, how do you see me so well from opposite coasts?
I was wondering the same thing! Is it the new vaccine chip?!
imo the word for "any level of force is justified if you believe you're under attack" is just fascism
I made a t-shirt design based on this bonus episode 😎
I wanted to subscribe for a long time. The tease of this episode is what made me pull the trigger!
same here!
This episode made me give in and subscribe, it was worth it! I’d like it if you did an episode on mass shootings in America. When was the first one? How were things addressed at the height of concern about the issue? How did we get to the legislative apathetic place we’re in now?
When I was around 6 or 7 my family was taking Amtrak somewhere for vacation, so it was at least a two-day trip. I made friends with another kid on the train and eventually, she asked if I watched the Smurfs. When I said yes she informed me that it was Satanic so we couldn't play anymore.
I just listened to your Elian Gonzalez episode, which means I've now finished your entire back-catalogue. Love your work guys. Happy Birthday Sarah!
Have you ever considered collaborating with Abbie Richards (@abbiesr on Twitter)?? I would love to get y’all in a zoom room and witness the debunking debauchery that would ensue!!
i'd love to hear you do an episode on the panic about violent films and video games (i remember it being a big thing in the 2000's about GTA but i'm sure it wasn't the first time it happened). i still don't know if it was a genuine worry or just the usual "won't someone please think of the children" hand wringing.
In the vein of maligned women, would you consider doing an episode on Wallis Simpson? She seems to be someone onto which people project things. Was she a sexual sorcerer or a prude, desperate to be on the throne or to get away from it, a huge nazi or a willing dupe, part of the greatest love story ever or just who King Edward was with when he became king, etc. I think the biggest debunking is Edward was infertile so there was no world in which Elizabeth didn't become queen.
I’ve never heard Ben Shapiro’s voice before and I hate y’all for making me hear it, but I will say that the fact that he will say whore but not pussy says a lot about conservative men as a whole
PS I am a GenZ-er, so this show isn't really 'Your wrong about' for me it was 'hey, here is what your parents and older people in your life were taught about this thing, but here is actually what happened in the 80s/90s!'
Sarah I love all your daffodils! That interview with on ABC made me smile!! I tell everyone I can about this podcast it brings so much joy to my life. Keep up the good work
I’m a Gen X parent of a 15yr old. I can’t TikTok, but he shares his faves every day. It slaps. Neurologically, teens need to be together, do dumb things, irritate adults. Pandemic isolation is kryptonite. TikTok is medicine. Gen Z is hive mind like no previous generation. Sarah has them spot-on... a valuable implicit You’re Wrong About. Thank you!
I. LOVE. THIS.
I would love an episode on Adnan Sayed/The Serial podcast. I feel like that's one of the biggest public you're wrong abouts in the past decade and it would be great to see a large podcast cover it in a critical way. I've probably commented this before, but I feel like it's the perfect topic for you guys.
I hadn't actually heard anything about this. Do you have any info about what was wrong/missing with the original podcast?
what you said about Old Country Road made me think you might enjoy Cowboy Rap by Ena Da (it'll pop up in a youtube search)
Michael, you were quoted in this article I just read. Also, Tim Ballard is a con artist. Ok:) https://www.romper.com/life/mom-influencers-child-sex-trafficking
Oh, I would love to hear you guys talk to Dee Snider about this!!
I would love to hear a bonus ep about your recommendations for your favourite podcasts - I value your opinions ❤️
I think you guys need to look at this I love it https://twitter.com/LilNasX/status/1382746629896228867?s=19
And also how the Moral Majority started all the crazy just to get Reagan votes. Watch Norman Lears documentary on Netflix
I am a Christian But not an “evangelical” I haven’t watched the video Not because I think I’ll be “turned” gay I’m 50 years old and I say you be you no matter what! I would love for you to do a “Your wrong about” about the different types of Christians. My stance is always “Love one another”
Joined the Patreon when I saw this episode was coming out. Great episode, I’m just a little nauseated from having to hear Ben Shapiro read the lyrics to WAP again. My stars, he is such a tool
I went to a really small high school and graduated in 1992, having come out as gay 2 years prior. I was told that the faculty met to express concern about me “forcing my sexuality” on my schoolmates a) simply by existing and b) assuming I would sexually assault my way through all the guys I went to school with. The “you’re shoving this down our throats” accusation never seems to die and I’m thrilled Lil Nas X is calling this out. It’s so dehumanizing and soul-crushing to be treated like a monster or a predator simply for existing.
I love the episode. The Lil Nas X controversy is playing out on a larger scale what happened with Tyler Glenn's song "Trash" which caused a ruckus within Mormonism. Trash definitely has a similar vibe in that he comes to terms with his sexuality and owns it. In the video he depicts different Mormon themes including parts of the Mormon temple ritual. I love seeing these examples of people escaping such toxic cultures and showing how they have moved on
I watched the video and the lyrics are amazing and also found this - http://recoveringagency.com/digging-through-trash-analysis-of-symbols-in-tyler-glenns-exmormon-music-video/ Thank you for showing me this rabbit hole, Ian :)
I would love an episode on Martha Stewart, it seems a bit like she was made an example of. And was there something about her talking a lot about lemons when she got out?
Oh my yes! What a great idea. If you do this, please keep a count of how often she says (in interviews or print) “my”, “mine” “me”. Once you start listening for it, you realize she says those words more than any other.
I'm British, so excuse my lack of knowledge on this, but it was mentioned in this episode that freedom of religion was one of the reasons people left England in the first place, right? So... what happened to that? Isn't the separation of Church and State a... *thing*? This is one of the reasons I don't understand the death penalty too. God is mentioned on money and in the Pledge of Allegiance too, right? Who did that? Did they just not get the separation of Church and State memo, or what? Who was project managing!? That's a lot of questions.
I think the origin of separation of church and state was more about keeping government out of the church and less about keeping the church out of government. (And I’m sure the founding fathers did not want to have input from the Pope or the head of any other religious institution) Churches don’t have to pay taxes and have less government oversight, like how the Supreme Court struck down COVID-19 rules limiting the size of in person indoor church services as an infringement on religious liberty. The Christian right wing has been perverting the definition of religious freedom to mean “I’m Christian and I refuse to have to deal with people or thoughts that do not reinforce that.”...imo
Loved the ep. 2 things, 1 thing I think was missing about the discussion but Sarah mentioned is he was commenting on HIS OWN religion. People acted like he did something horrible but all people in a majority christian society like the US have their world view framed by it. Thats why you can research so many shows/novels and always find a Lucifer of Jesus metaphor. Its a recurring joke that we keep remaking the same story but its bc we have the same building blocks in our heads. The second thing, the implication scene is funnily enough one of the most famous scenes from IASIP and I remember watching it on youtube and thinking... I think a lot of these people commenting they like it maybe like it for the wrong reason? Dennis slow reveal as having always been Ted Bundy is also maybe getting lost to some people which to me is very similar to the main character is awful issue that plagued Breaking Bad.
I would love to hear your thoughts on S&M by Rihanna. I was 9 when that song came out and I listened to it all the time. but now looking back I'm wondering if there was some sort of moral panic around that song that I missed
I don’t know if this controversy made enough of a splash outside Reddit to be worth investigating for a future episode, but I can’t get out of my head how, a month ago, several prominent subreddits went private to protest Reddits’s supposed support for pedophilia by hiring disgraced British politician Aimee Challenor. Eventually Reddit fired her. Her connection to pedophilia seems to come from two items: 1) She hired her father to work for a campaign after he had been charged with a disturbing crime against a child (for which he was later convicted). 2) Her husband tweeted that he had pedophilic fantasies. This all seems to have blown up when reddit automatically banned a UK Politics mod for posting a news story that included Challenor’s name. My read is, Reddit users were at least as ticked about the censorship as they were about the proximity to child abuse. Although, several subreddits took the opportunity to fundraise for children’s charities. A game of telephone seemed to change the charge from, she was adjacent to or supportive of these pedophiles to, she was a pedophile herself. In addition, Challenor is a trans woman. It seems like this blowup dovetails nicely with a lot of the anti-trans campaigning lately, a lot of it coming from the UK. Further, she was a mod of a prominent LGBT subreddit. This recent post on a gay men’s forum seems to make the transphobia explicit: https://www.reddit.com/r/askgaybros/comments/mn58an/rlgbt_is_a_grooming_sub_for_pedophiles_please/ So we go from Reddit censoring in the name of protecting employee privacy to a transparently transphobic attack in a queer space. This seems to hit several of the key points for a moral panic—a genuinely awful crime, a tenuous connection to a minority to blame, “won’t someone think of the children”. Nevermind Reddit’s general history as a cesspool and repository of questionable material...
I would love an episode on this because honestly, I didn't know enough to even have an opinion on it, but it blew up my stream on Reddit. I want to know was it an anti-trans witch hunt or an actual issue that needed to be addressed.
Great episode thank you, i want to share that my parents did make my little brother and me like Graceland! also I like it too that nowadays Lilnasx or Cardi B and Megan thee stallion can answer in real time to their detractors and simply deliver their message and shut some of the idiots up. It does seem new.
This made my week. And yes, I am a 38-year-old millennial who cries over my parents’ expectations even though I disagree with my parents about most things. My response to Lil Nas’s new video and subsequent satanic panic was that there is something wrong with anyone who sees that video and doesn’t just want to cheer him on and feed him a good hot meal. He’s like 21 years old. Calm down with the pearl clutching.
Sarah you nailed the heart of my millenial shame 😝😝 zoomers are inspirational for their shameless audacity in being themselves 🥰🥰 i love them.
This was lovely. I’m reading “conflict is not abuse” by Sarah Schulman right now which has a lot to say about the self-defense/claiming of victimhood thing discussed near the end of the episode. I wonder if Sarah or Mike have read it—Schulman so far seems to be another prophet of nuance which is always such a blessing
I feel like we should also bring up the time that Ben Shapiro claimed that rap isn’t technically music, citing his “music theorist father who went to music school”. As someone who did go to music school this is such an embarrassingly stupid take to have and the reasons he cites for it are complete nonsense.
In the 90s it was like a BIG REVELATION that Joe Camel was designed to market cigarettes to kids. People were shocked and horrified but no one really picked up on it (that I can remember) let alone railed against it. How TF anyone thinks this is marketing Satanism is beyond me. It's easier to want to solve a problem that isn't real than like, you know, help a child who is being molested by a priest or a gymnast being fingered by her doctor.
Can you guys do an episode about Cesar Millan?
They sort of did! https://www.buzzsprout.com/1112270/3884069-alpha-males
I didn't think that Lil Nas X did come out voluntarily? Didn't someone threaten to out him, so he kind of had to come out? I dunno, I am the 39yo Millennial crying over my parents' expectations 🤣
I am also that person
Im not trying to be rude only curious but is the pronunciation of mise en scene at the start an american thing? Is it like niche?
No, I have never heard anyone say it that way before. I also hate it when people pronounce niche to rhyme with ditch.
This episode was fantastic.
Sarah your flowers are beautiful <3 Daffodils right?
such beautiful daffodil and Staffordshire dog pottery energy!
The only context missing from this episode is The YeeHaw Agenda, a sort of aesthetic Western Rennisance for Black folks that was ongoing when Old Town Road came out. The term was invented by my internet friend Bri Malandro and has an amazing IG account accompanying it. Check it out: https://www.instagram.com/theyeehawagenda/
I'm gonna jump in and be that guy who works in music copyright with my fave Old Town Road fact, the other part of Old Town Road that wasn't a beat he bought online is actually a sample from a Nine Inch Nails song (the plinky guitar part, weirdly), which is why when you look up the credits Trent Reznor has a writing credit on it (I used to work for Trent's publisher, it was by far one of our biggest earners on a technicality lol)
This is marvellous
I was amused by the It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia reference especially as Mac's dance at the end of season 13 had a very similar theme to Lil Nas X's video, the struggle between religious and sexual identity.
The stuff about Christians justifying anything so long as they convince themselves it's self defence? THAT is exactly how the evangelicals I know defend voting for Trump. 100%. Though, I do think it goes back further than the 80's. There's roots in white supremacy and pushback to school integration.
incredible episode 👏🏻
It's probably a sign that I've been a little too immersed in Q world lately, but I'm just starting the episode, and I found it really amusing to have a 17 reference in a discussion about accidentally signaling to conspiracy theorists, without anyone pointing out that Q is the 17the letter of the Alphabet. Q people love finding 17s. So I'm sorry, Sarah, you weren't accidentally making a bible reference, depending on the interpreter you were actually signaling one of the following: *You are in on the plan and ready for the day of reckoning when the cabal is taken down. *The actual Sarah Marshall has already been taken down and you are a double (I wish I were kidding). *You are part of the cabal, and mocking Q people because you can't resist inserting subtle signals into everything.
Great episode loved it! Random aside: you know there’s tons of secular and left wing homeschoolers too right?
The prosecution complex: they're afraid that the marginalized will treat them the same way they treated the marginalized
It's funny how conservations are afraid of what MIGHT happen and marginalized people are afraid of things that DID happen.
Great episode as always! Have you all considered doing an episode on personality tests? As corporations increasingly rely on these for hiring/firing decisions and force employees to both take them and sit through endless discussions and analysis on how to best weaponize their results to be better employees, I find myself getting increasingly frustrated that no one seems to remember that the gold standard Myers-Briggs was essentially the Buzzfeed quiz of its day! A good Vox explainer below, thanks again for all the great content! https://www.vox.com/2014/7/15/5881947/myers-briggs-personality-test-meaningless
I do think Lil Nas X was forced to come out earlier than he had planned, there were rumors going around before had and I know it was tied to his Nicki Minaj Stan account. I’m really glad it worked out for him and he’s still seeing immense success, but people were trying to out him.
Yeah, I've definitely heard stuff about him potentially getting blackmailed and that's *why* he came out. Obviously, this is the kind of thing we probably won't know the truth about for years, if ever, but! Also, I just wanted to jump in and thank you guys for using the uncensored version of WAP, because man I find "wet and gooshy" way more off-putting than "wet ass pussy."
The only 80's toy that is definitely part of a Satanic agenda and out to get your kids are furbys.
And teddy ruxspin!
:looks up at vase of daffodils in my own home: oh no
Sounds like Ben Shapiro is upset that he’s never truly pleased a woman enough to know what a WAP is.
Thanks for the great episode! Love the It's Always Sunny reference. The boat episode is one of the best ones lol.
4. The assassination of Malcolm X 5. GMOs
Ohhhh yes I would love to hear them cover GMOs!
3. Rosa Parks and the “Rosa was tired” narrative
2. The selling of the Iraq War/WMD
If you're interested in that question, Ezra Klein interviewed Robert Draper about the book Draper wrote about it. https://www.vox.com/2020/9/2/21417224/why-did-america-invade-iraq-the-ezra-klein-show-to-start-a-war-bush-trump-administration
So excited to listen to this! I feel like all of US history could use a Michael-and-Sarah-style debunking, but if you’re taking requests, these would be mine:
1. Chappaquiddick/the death of Mary Jo Kopechne
Also, the daffodils as Q symbols made me laugh out loud. Setting up studio space is so fraught with peril now!
I am 32 (and British) and also love Graceland by Paul Simon. Just felt important to share
I loved WAP and took the opportunity go revisit similar sex songs from women artists, from Peaches F*ck the pain away to Consolidated's 'You suck' to Salt n Pepa, Madonna, it's such a 90s moral panic.
While I hate my name being associated with Ben, it sure does let me know who to stay away from as they bring him up when they learn my last name.
I am really interested in the ending point, about how people overstate harm so they don’t have to do the hard work of reconciliation. If this is something you are interested in, definitely read “Conflict is Not Abuse” by Sarah Schulman. She really dives into this idea in interpersonal relationships, the State (Canadian law punishing people for giving a sexual partner HIV), and in the global context (the third infantada). Also super great insight into the queer community, including exploring the idea that the acceptance of gay marriage was a way of returning white gay family members back into America’s White supremacy capitalism patriarchal fold. Would also be a good guest if there needs to be another Sarah on the podcast.
OooOoOooOooOooh thanks for the reminder. I basically never read non-fiction, but I'm going to get this.
I will never not be reduced to tears of laughter by Shapiro bragging about never making his wife come.
I love that they included your ending where you name how beautiful and important it is to see queerness and black queerness. And you are using your privileged identities (in this case) to spread the value, beauty and art of the video. Thank you to Sarah and Mike as always! Love this show so much
(for the record: arousal non-concordance is relatively high in cis women. In other words: wetness is not a very good indicator of interest in having intercourse - or sex. For more information on what we do and do no know about cis women's sexuality I recommend "Come As You Are" by Emily Nagoski) And now I'm going to listen to Paul Simon.
As someone that's been in therapy & physical therapy for a year dealing with this issue - thank you!! I also thought of Nagoski's book during that part of the episode. LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK.
The implication! What a great analogy too!
Could we get a “Daffodils Are For Nightline” mug in the shop?
Gonna start signing my work emails "Certified freaks seven days a week."
I love the approach to patriarchy and punishing women’s sexuality. I’d never heard idea that it’s tied to the notion of parentage.
if you find it interesting have a look at the first chapter of Engels' "the origin of Family, private property and the state", you cand find it online for free
Asking myself do I want to listen now and crave more YWA content later. Or savor this for a boring or tough day this week. Either way pumped about it!
I love this. I would also love an episode on George Michael.
Agree and YES PLEASE!
🎶 call me by your name 🎶🎵
#satanicpanicattack 💯🙌🏻
I was NOT expecting to have to dance to WAP while brushing my teeth when I hit play on this episode today. 😅
Just a quick correction: we do know what his stan Twitter account was because the barbz -- that's Nicki Minaj stans -- are super toxic and threatened to out him. They alleged it was not because he was gay, but because he wasn't being open about being a barb. It was unequivocally homophobic, no doubt about it. They had already circulated pics of him wearing pretty femme clothing as well as screencaps from his previous tweets (some of which were islamophobic, which is inexcusable). So it wasn't necessarily his choice to come out right then and there, but it could have been He hasn't confirmed whether that was his account, but New York magazine looked into it and offered proof that it was indeed him (his @nasmaraj account was suspended but his alt @nasmarai wasn't -- he just changed his username from nasmarai to lilnasx at some point). he also tweeted an apology shortly after those islamophobic screencaps popped up in 2019. It wasn't a horrible apology, but it was vague and he didn't explicitly say what he regretted saying in the past. I mean, I don't hold it against him because he was a kid when he ran that stan Twitter account and he's STILL super young at 21. I just thought it was really weird that his fellow nicki stans were the first to try to "cancel" him, not Christians. And now the Christians are stealing from the stans‘ playbook and recirculating the same screencaps that first popped up a couple years ago
Isn't the real sin here, he collaborated with Billy Ray?!? Love Lil Nas X. Panini for life.
Billy Ray is pretty awesome, especially in context (though yes, “Achy Breaky Heart” was a three-headed demon unleashed upon an unwary world).
Can't wait to start listening to this! (From a queer pole dancer who now, thanks to lil nas x, is interested in pole dancing to hell)
I love that you addressed The Implication from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I would take it one step further and say that Dennis is not just a rapist but is actually a Ted Bundy style serial killer.
I would love to hear an episode about the (understandable) panic around Covid vaccines and blood clots and how this compares to what happened when blood clots were found to be connected to birth control. It seems like women are meant to just put up with the risk when it comes to birth control (perhaps due to judgement around who takes it) but now there there is a risk from a medication that everyone is meant to take, there is greater concern.
The BBC4 radio show 'more or less' did the numbers on both of these in this week's episode
The daffodils look wonderful! (The episode is, of course, perfection)
I needed a TW for Ben Shapiro.
Ben Shapiro reading the WAP lyrics is my "whispered in Margaret Thatchers ear".
Like the song wish this was longer so gonna have to loop it! Random thoughts: love that LilNasX put a radical acceptance opening narration into the video that the haters are now platforming and seemingly spending a looong time repeatedly viewing an appreciation of the gay male body. Unlike in the 80s/90s the artist can do a lyric explainer specifically outlining his exact intentions and meanings with a Genius video which he ALSO did for Old Town Road for the “surprised parents” out there. The “If Eve ain't in your garden, you know that you can” throwing back the “not Adam and Steve” taunt. How open he has been about how physically challenging the pole sequence was when similar acrobatics for female popular artists go unremarked on if not downright expected. The fan interactions and broadening of the conversation like Imani Barbarin’s TikTok and Twitter thread about the video, disability, and faith.
I don't remember the exact name of the episode but it came out around August 29th, 2020
Sawbones did an episode about WAP I think you would really enjoy. Dr McElroy does not agree with Ben Shapiro's wife at all!
Love sawbones too! Gotta check this out have been binging YWA SO MUCH I've skipped a few with the McElroys.
I love everything you both said in this episode.
I'm so excited
Omg, me too!
YES blessing my 3 am!
