AMA #1!

Dear Debunkmates,

Welcome to our first-ever bonus room! We hope you like it here. Mike and I recorded this episode in the same time and place we usually do—Saturday morning, with me in my closet in Portland and him in his apartment in Seattle—and I think recording it made me realize how much work we put into the show. It was weird to talk about something without consulting a giant compendium of notes. We got to talk about our process, ramble about some of our favorite movies and answer some great questions you had for us, although there were a ton we had to save for another episode.

If you've been listening to the show for awhile, you know that the technical aspects of hosting a podcast are ... not our strength. As far as we can tell, there are two ways to listen to this episode:

First, you can play it directly through the Patreon app.

Second, you can use our custom RSS feed to play it through your favorite podcast app. Here's the instructions from Patreon. There's a few apps that won't allow custom RSS feeds, so you might have to switch to Apple Podcasts or the Patreon app for our bonus shows. Sorry about that!

If you subscribe to other podcasts through Patreon and have tips for other listeners (or us!) about making this easier, please leave them in the comments. And let us know if you have any problems!

This was a fun one—maybe because it's our first and so far our only episode where it was friendship all along.

Excelsior!

Sarah & Mike

Wild that you both love The Fall. It’s one of my favorites and so few people have seen it

I know this is an old pod, but are they talking about "The Fall" (2006) or a different one?

I assume that one

Listening to this again and think we need a You Are Good episode with Mike and A Simple Plan

Re-listened to this episode today and I'm cackling at Sarah's "Titanic has been topical for years and it continues to be topical and it's only going to get more topical!" Truer words never spoken 🤣

C
Carly Gove · February 1, 2022

just came back to this one…it’s a shame that the 12 episode AIDS series never happened. I hope one of you (or both of you!) has the opportunity to explore it in that kind of format eventually.

The Fall is also one of my favorite movies 😭 I love everything about that movie, the costumes, the story, the characters, everything!

Coming to this a solid few months late, but I really enjoyed this - especially the part about fan fiction. I was heavily into the Harry Potter fan fiction world as a teenager, for similar reasons to those discussed here. It’s really nice to hear others talking about their experiences in those communities because I feel like (for me at least) and it was never talked about in real life at the time. There are probably a lot more of us than I originally thought!

M
McKayla Mills · April 30, 2021

I’m just now listening to this, but I’m so glad you mentioned the Pruitt-Igoe Myth! It’s such a formative part of St. Louis history (and urban living outside of St. Louis) and so few people know about it!

A
Amanda Robertson · April 30, 2021

How did I not know about this documentary about Pruitt Igoe?! I did a whole project in college about the myth that the 'tower in the park' was bad design. 2007, probably - ahead of my time!

M
Morgan McCafferty · April 28, 2021

Sarah and Mike, I won a radio contest when I was 13 for a New Year’s Eve party at an arcade at our shopping mall in Columbus, Ohio. It included a free games pass and 4 free drinks (all the Root Beer, booya!). They told me I had won and didn’t ask my age. When I asked ‘I’m 13, but you guys just said it’s 21+. Am I still allowed to go?’ He put me on hold and a few moments later told me yes, but they couldn’t put my reaction on the air. I ended up taking my 11 year old brother with me and my parents decided to just pick us up at 1am. It was 2010, going into 2011!

C
CJ · April 25, 2021

Sarah, I'm sure you're aware, but incase you're not, some of the Newsies boys made a film while on the set and bored. It doesn't hold up great but it's available on YouTube and worth a watch for a big time Newsies fan :D It's called Blood Drips Heavily on Newsies Square and it's pretty much just Don Knotts murdering cast members ;)

S
Sadie tuescher · March 30, 2021

E
Eve Rock · March 25, 2021

Just played this to my titanic obsessed (but also scarily conservative) 14 year old daughter to try and convince her that it’s an anti capitalist love story - she seemed to take some of it in 👍🏻

m
morgan cleopatra · March 11, 2021

This was so lovely to listen to. I deeply appreciate the way you listen to one another. It feels so loving and understanding. I especially loved Sarah calling Ursula a loan shark, and Michael saying, "Oh, god, yes" about not wanting A League of Their Own to end.

M
Michelle Murray · February 15, 2021

I’m pretty sure the Titanic move scarred me for life and no one around me seemed to understand... I still start to cry whenever I try and tell people about the scene with the mom and her children in the lower decks and I’m so happy to know there are others that feel the same!!

H
Heather J · January 17, 2021

I'd love an episode on 'you're wrong about Disney villains' comparing Disneys versions to the historical fairytale characters.

P
Paige · January 10, 2021

Sarah's obsession with Newsies reminds me of my obsession with Yuri on Ice. I definitely recommend it, it involves figure skating and is great for the fan fiction similar to Newsies.

M

I will be using "former future attorney" as a phrase from now on. Sarah, you just have such a way with words. Mike, you actually gave me an epiphany when you described why you love the movie A Simple Plan; I have a different background from you but also valued friendship deeply from a young age, above family-for-sake-of-family for similar reasons you named. Ahh, not only do I learn more about the world when I listen to YWA but also more about myself. Seriously, thank you so much for creating a fabulous podcast.

d
dan jackson · November 9, 2020

When Mike was describing the plot for A Simple Plan I thought he was talking about Shallow Grave as it is the exact same premise but set in Edinburgh. Danny Boyle's and Ewan McGregor's first film.

Olivia R Burton · October 5, 2020

I'm so happy to get this extra feed! Now the part that usually makes people mad: A pedantic note on cows; they're not kept in a state of artificial lactation, they are repeatedly impregnated and their babies get taken away (and usually sold as veal) so that humans can take the milk and sell it. Then they are killed for meat when their bodies give out from being forced to endure pregnancy and birth over and over. Would you guys ever consider doing a "you're wrong about veganism" episode? So many people think it's about trashing meat eaters for the fun of it, when really it's a movement about stopping animal abuse and the destruction of the earth. Love you guys!

A
Asher Brumberger · October 16, 2020

I don’t think Vegans hate meat eaters but I do think that a lot of vegans look down on meat eaters and believe themselves to be more ethical. And while that may be the case sometimes, it’s not always. Meat eaters have choices in how ethically they’d like their meat and animals products raised just like vegans have choices in how ethically farmed their food is. Lots of vegetable farming is destroying the planet and society with morally bankrupt employment policies and farming practices that cause widespread harm to especially our soil with the overuse of pesticides, tilling, and fertilizers. And on the meat producing side their is factory farming, rampant antibiotic use, and destruction of land thru ethically corrupt grazing practices. But their is hope for vegans and meat eaters and everything in between. Using better farming and grazing techniques can greatly improve our soils thus improving our planet as a whole. And improving working conditions to include a living wage, full benefits, healthcare, 401ks and profit sharing would improve the lives of our farm workers. It’s not as simple an answer as “eat this stuff instead of that other stuff”. It’s really about how the stuff we consume is planted, harvested, produced, raised, and fed.

New favorite podcast, love everything about it, thank you so much for being you and doing what you do! One small quibble, because I feel like being "that guy" - you mentioned Robert Plant playing guitar, and that's not really what he does. Regarding the disco episode (which I used to detox from the child trafficking episode 😬): has anyone else noticed the influence of disco in modern music? Doja Cat “Say So” starts off with a retro sound and catchy beat, goes right into the chorus, makes me want to skate!

Sarah, my love for you increased ten fold upon hearing that you are a fan-fiction nerd. Off to write fan-fiction about you both because I want to live in your world.

Thanks for posting this in Patreon. I only found out about QAnon today, after hearing something on a weeks-old episode of Wait! Wait! Don't Tell Me!, about how Twitter shut down a lot of QAnon stuff. But I struggled to Google it, because Wait! Wait! pronounced it in a way that sounded like "cannon." Wow. Talk about fan fiction. QAnon sounds like fan fiction created by people whose creativity and suspicions are not burdened by science or Occam's Razor. I'm more concerned about the other article, from ... Healthline (?), that reported research that finds 25% of respondents believe conspiracy theories about COVID-19. I'm happy to support your efforts to set records straight, simply by actually reading the public record.

Love it, love it, love it! I love the casual, low edit feel of this. It's an outdoor, socially distract chat walk with good friends vibe. We debunkmates will gratefully consume the table scraps of the show. There's actually a balance here of less polish making the experience a little better. I've done 3 episodes (~2h) of my own heavily edited podcast. I *know* how much work this is. More than anything I can hear the joy you have in making the show. Thank you for YWA!

(I used to regularly watch it alone on Friday nights during a particularly lonely time in architecture school) and think it would be a great episode topic!
