The Orca Report with Brianna Bowman
Do orcas really hate millionaires? And if so, why don’t they vote? Deep sea correspondent Brianna Bowman is here with the answers to these and other burning (bubbling?) questions, plus a submarine trip down memory lane. While reflecting on their expansive Keiko series, they also discuss killer whale true crime, Deadliest Catch, and that Wuthering Heights movie (which sadly contains no marine mammals).

Dear Sarah Marshall, you make sure so many subjects are given justice, I would really love to listen in the future to an episode on pigeons, animals that many people know they get wrong but then they think they get them right and still get them wrong. They are vegan dogs and they are poor man's chicken, an episode about pigeons would write itself.
If you're thinking of making a movie about a shark and a ouija board, it's already been done. Ouija Shark. I watched it.
EGGS mention
Sarah, please please PLEASE do a You’re Wrong About medieval times!
OMG editing!
This episode put me in the best mood possible today omg I loved the tangents and hype for fanfiction 🩷
how evil is the fishing industry? please ruin seafood (besides farmed bivalves) for me. actually ruin farmed bivalves too
Also, if you're craving SATC fanfiction, there's a podcast called Saving Sex and the City 3 that is nothing but that!
I feel like Sarah has pretty directly helped the world. Listening to YWA in college woke me up to the idea that having empathy for everyone means including people who many don't think deserve it. I don't see this mindset nearly often enough, and I do think the world would be saved if more people would adopt it

I went cage diving with great white sharks in South Africa in 2014! I was on unrelated fieldwork, and I decided to throw my money at that experience, despite being a broke grad student, bc I thought, when will I get to do this again? We did see sharks, they came very close, it was amazing. I have a dvd of the experience that I can’t watch bc it’s the wrong region lol The sharks had excellent timing as well bc our guide was asking me some very intense questions about my research, which was on heritage tourism and apartheid, and it turns out being on a boat in the ocean is not a fun time to say things to someone who maybe wants to misinterpret your words! And just as it was getting too tense, SHARKS!
Thank you for this episode, ladies. It touched me. ☺️
I have loved all of these episode with Brianna and I just love Keiko. Thanks for sharing these! Also, Sarah, niche interest colliding but I hope you’ve seen the Italian figure skater’s Jaws program, it’s amazing: https://youtu.be/Zva-9OoMMbo?t=122&si=mwqJuTDhwA3GfugP
Oh my god! It made me so happy to hear that you both loved the new Wuthering Heights too!!! I enjoyed that movie so much too! I definitely want to support more smutty movies that our 15-year old selves would love!
*chants* FISHERIES FISHERIES FISHERIES Would love more ichthyic content!
kurt vonnegut summer book club please 🙏
Ah this was so fun! Ocean matters feel more important than ever so big yay that you’re doing you, Brianna 🫶 I have Qs stemming from the seemingly catastrophic state of the salmon industry in Tasmania ~ which became a national story after masses of diseased salmon washed ashore:/ Which makes me wonder what the truck is going on with ‘industry standards’ and why aren’t harmful/polluting practices being cracked down on? What factors form fishery policies anyhow? and is/why isn’t ecology, sustainability, adaption, etc at the heart of it? Is there a sustainable way to operate ocean fish farms? & for funs, Could a global ocean cuties force unite in investigation, science & engineering to create policy proposals relating to their fields? Not sure if there’s an active ocean UN equivalent to submit to - in my daydream you’d have Christiana Figueres championing this ~ anyhow, Any thoughts/ tangents would be much appreciated! 🦞🩵 & thanks a bunch for keeping an eye on the ocean! This show is like a big hug with facts & I can’t thank you enough for the wholehearted work that you do, Sarah ~ your man, Chelsea :))
I was a child obsessed with matlock 😂 I got very excited
Would love a Deadliest Catch You’re Wrong About!! As a Eureka, CA kid, that show terrified me because I knew how cold the ocean was!
Am I understanding correctly that there was a blame-a-woman piece to the yacht orcas? Really, guys?
As a fellow Portlander, I would like to know more about this sandwich 🥪
Would love a you’re wrong about the fishing industry
Hello from New Zealand
"Dangerous Animals" is a great shark movie - with an unprecedented twist!
If you’re looking for some more marine horror I recommend Sea Fever (2019) currently on AMC+
Also, more whales and dolphins. Did you have one of those 90’s mall tshirts that was covered with artistically drawn animals of a theme? There was the dolphin shirt, the rainforest shirt, the big cats shirt, etc.
I love this series, and I definitely want to hear about the politics of fisheries. Also, why we can’t have abalone anymore or the sea otter/kelp/urchin saga
Oooh, and the sea star part of that latter story...!
I still have 35 minutes left but wanted to comment that this is maybe the most fun podcast episode ive ever listened to. Such a delight. Thank you <3
And I definitely want to hear about the politics in fisheries.
Loved this episode! I was worried it would be traumatizing like The episodes about Keiko. So on board with loving animals like I did as a child (basically, that never went away). And also being an adult knowing that we really can't understand if whale behavior has any parallel to human behavior. But the Mama's boys. My heart 🥰🥰🥰. Keep it up ladies!
Highly recommend Under Paris (2024) hilariously terrible movie that escalates off the rails in stakes, scale and shark evolution
Unironically one of my favorite movies
Re. oceanic horror movies, have you seen Tommy Wiseau’s “Big Shark”? It really solves the “how do sharks get to people on land” problem 😂😂😂
I loved the Keiko and orca series! Also entertaining was the discussion of shark movies as they have *thoughts*. On my shark movie ranking list i have 1. the shallows 2. Deep blue sea 3. Jaws 4. Tie between the Meg and 47 meters down.
Always more Brianna Bowman! Two of my favorite and totally unrelated podcasts have collided and I couldn't be happier. Tooth And Claw also covered bachelor orca pods running amuck with billionaire' yachts. " You were in the wrong marriage. That's why people run marathons." will keep me laughing all day.
Tooth and Claw. I'll check it out!!!!
The other thing about the butterflies is that they have memories from being caterpillars despite completely disintegrating to mush between the two forms! I think I recall in that episode that they tested the caterpillar with an unpleasant sensation and in butterfly form it recoiled at the same stimulus? I still think about that often.
I just saved a butterfly from my cat five minutes before reading this, and now I will be even more careful when there are butterflies around 😭
Sarah's silliness was on full blast this episode. So good!
The Jenny Nicholson reference 😍😍😍
As a former tall ship sailor, I got SO EXCITED when I heard the word "gam" come up, I was going to come and tell you about the meaning, "sailors from different ships hanging out socially" and I was even more delighted that I of course didn't have to, because Sarah looked it up first! It's definitely still in use in the tall ship world, at least partially influenced by the fact that (as I'm sure you'll be shocked to know) people who live and work on old timey wooden sailing ships love reading Milton. One of my favorite memories from the years I spent sailing was the time I was sitting on deck when I was off-watch, re-reading Moby Dick, suddenly hearing a puff of air, turning around, and seeing a humpback whale surfacing maybe ten feet off the port side. Dropped the book to go look at an actual whale. Magical. Whales and dolphins would come and check out ships I was on pretty often, actually. I've seen them circle around for long stretches of a time, surfacing and breaching multiple times, rolling around, generally seeing what's happening. Dolphins like to ride the bow-wave, sometimes staying with the boat for what must have been several (nautical) miles. None of them ever showed any sign of trying to pull at our rudder or sink us; maybe they could tell we were all broke as hell. Thanks for a great episode!
Are you aware of/do you own something with this on it https://buyolympia.com/Item/lucy-bellwood-i-like-big-boats-sticker
i saw an orca while listening to this episode!!! in whidbey island washington, happened to look out the window - and then saw the spray and the breach! hallelujah
Loving that Sarah is also a Deep Blue Sea evangelist
Hey, team Deep Blue Sea: there's a new Renny Harlin shark movie coming out in just a few weeks!
As the mother of an almost 3 year old boy, I relate very much to orca moms not having time or energy for another kid because of their Mama's boy
Sounds like Sarah and Briana should listen to Saving Sex and the City 3: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/saving-sex-and-the-city-3/id1378862255
Keiko Take The Wheel
People looking for swimming with sharks in the United States. There is a shark snorkeling tour on the North shore of Oahu whose focus is education and conservation of sharks. They also collect data about the sharks during the tour. There are also caged tours too but I don't know as much about them.
I have often dreamed of a far off place where a great warm welcome will be waiting for me 🫶🏼 🎼
Sarah and Brianna, I live in Cannon Beach. If you ever decide to have a marine-or-maritime gam in Clatsop County, please consider this your invitation. My household would be happy to host you. Also, I am always interested in hearing more coastal facts and ideas!
"I'm the charismatic megafauna I've been looking for all along" should be on a t-shirt 😆
I'm a bitch I'm an orca Sinking yachts Just off Majorca I'm a sinner I'm a whale Imma hit you with my tail…
I stole this from the internet, but I love it so much 😂
