258 - The Late Great Planet Earth (feat. Julian Feeld)
Julian Feeld (Super Structure, QAA Podcast) joins the lads in the end times as they cover the 1978 film adaptation of the father of all Rapture narratives: The Late Great Planet Earth. Topics include the conspiratorial thinking of dispensational millennialism, the nefarious tree-slut Hal Lindsay, and what it means when your rock solid prophecy keeps having to move the goal posts.

Judith being a legend. I love her
I am surprised nobody laughed at the part where they were talking about how somebody knew Hal Lindsay and you can hear AJ interject “Biblically!”
Late antique languages do not have a word for orange! Orange comes from the fruit which was introduced to Europe by the Umayyads after trading with China
The book of revelation says the great plates have the colors of fire, hyacinth and sulphur

This is my fourth serving of Julian this week and I’m not mad about it.
Any religion that sticks around inevitably becomes the religion of oppression, the hollow ideological justification for the tyranny of the ruling system. There is a fundamental emptiness and plasticity to religion where it can be warped and remade to suit any number of base systems.
Sub to superstructure; it’s extremely good.
I recently learned that Christopher Columbus, you know, the guy who invented European civilization controlling the Americas, his original intention for trying to find Asia/stripping the Americas of its wealth through colonialism was to use it to fund a new crusade that would take back Jerusalem from Islamic rule and start the end of the world. This Christian Apocalypticism and it's Imperialistic intentions has literally always been a part of the "American" Project. In a really sickening way, Columbus's goal of using the profits of American colonialism to fund the European conquest of the holy land has succeeded. I really hope the "ending the world" part doesn't also happen...
🎺🎺🎺
I went on a musical evangelical mission to Russia and Eastern Europe with my dad’s band through Daystar so that was a fun connection to make this morning *pukes*
These episodes (almost) need a trigger warning for religious trauma 😬
Perfect timing, I just spent like twenty minutes trying to make a "premillennial dispensationalism" pun for a work thing. It's cool that this guy at the end of his life was doing the arc of that pastor from Videodrome. Also this is so apropos given the AI cultists coming out to preach the eschaton of genious computer. Also also "nineteen six seven" was very rude
The Rationalists and Zizians are just AI Premillennial Dispensationalists, and also Calvanists. It's insane how our culture just keeps reproducing this kind of derangement.
As someone who was raised in Evangelicalism (and renounced it later) it’s weird hearing normal people talking about it. For instance: in Evangelical culture a ‘Christian’ is not someone who was raised in a Christian family and goes to a Christian church. No, a Christian is only someone who has had a salvation experience and invited Jesus into their heart and devoted their life to Him. If this sounds weird to you it’s because your upbringing was more normal than mine. So the guy saying he “became a Christian” after being raised in a Christian culture makes sense from inside the bubble.
Well that trumpet noise is going to be in my mind forever now.
Brian, thanks for calling out American pop culture having influence from millenarianism. As someone who came from a Calvinist background I can’t stress enough how much it influenced everything in America.
"When you first encountered Evangelicalism, where you blinded by its majesty?"
