New Year, New Us

Happy New Year! I'm officially back to work. Although I did start earlier this week, I messed up my sleeping schedule because I played Baldur's Gate 3 and it was difficult to keep to my normal 8-9PM sleeping hour time. It's harder to wake up earlier than it is to wake up later, that's for sure.

So I won't go much into details right now, but there was some work done last week for the game. Not exactly something that pushes content forward yet, but it remakes the intro with images and a better flow/pacing that in my opinion is better than the text we show in the beginning.

Before Christmas, I rushed to push an update that included changes (changes I made in 2 days) games would normally require 2-3 months of work to get them right. Specifically, I wanted to lower the memory usage, completely remove the lighting renderer, and use the Unity Addressable System, completely remove VSync, add a camera boundary system, and my ambition led me to do all this in only 2 days which wasn't very pleasant but I couldn't stop.

For the most part I think I've succeeded, but I'm worried some animations may not be loaded due to a potential oversight in some scenes where I forgot to load them so I'm replaying the game from scratch to see if any of this is happening.

In any case, the good thing now is that the game requires only 2-3ms on average to compute. It takes 16.67ms to complete 60 frames, so this means our game can technically run at 240-300fps+ without lagging. That's not very necessary though, so the frame rate is locked at 60fps and the remaining computing time will be kept as a performance overhead and for future systems to take from, while still maintaining a stable 60fps on most platforms.

The changes I've made are especially good on Android/mobile.

So, I didn't rest idle, but I did things that are supposedly better for the long term health of the game because even if 5% of players encounter an issue caused by memory and whatever, that's 50 out of 1000 players that can drop the game and if my changes helped a bit.

There's only one issue I've noticed and it happens to me 1 out of 100 times, making it difficult to debug.

Really... I once again went into details. I'll stop here for now :D On Monday I'll come back with my plans for the January update. Have a great weekend!
