Contents of the Post Office Carts

I’ve uploaded a video showing the contents of the captured carts here:

https://youtu.be/VSrPrLpS_0o

A few notes.

  1. The novelty of watching this will most likely wear off well before the video finishes. Spare a thought for the chap who had to view this many, many times.

  2. The original slide quality and hence the video recording of these is not exactly at IMAX level.

  3. The audio is not amazing either - but it’s been normalised, equalised and noise reduction(ed)…this is as good as it gets with my tools - and it’s plenty good enough to be listenable.

  4. The end of the video features the contents of some silent carts - these were made as silent slideshows.

  5. If you think something about this upload should have been done better, consider that unlike 75% of Silent Era movies that are totally lost forever, everyone can now ‘enjoy’ the contents of these carts, but nevertheless if messing around with this kind of thing, is your bag, I’ve provided a link here to download the full video file. - It’s around 13GB. But also read point 6…

  6. I’m totally done with these and never want to see anything to do with them ever again…and no I don’t want to buy any stamps.

Enjoy your weekend.

Thank you for digitizing these cartridges. Just wondering, is there just one advertisement on each cartridge, or are there several advertisements on a a cartridge?

T
Techmoan · November 3, 2025

It's been a while so I've forgotten most of this, but the carts run for a period of time before repeating, lets say 15 mins, and during that time there is a programme of mixed advertising.

Maybe it's because I didn't grow up with this, but I find these incredibly relaxing... or maybe it's because I didn't have to spend hours viewing these repeatedly. Either way, thanks for archiving these! I will absolutely be watching this whole video. Maybe not in one sitting, but this will probably be my wind down video at night until I've completed the whole thing!

It took over two months, but I have finally enjoyed the entire video! Thanks again for archiving and uploading.

So Mat, you say you don't want to buy stamps...but what about post-cards? Special envelopes? Traveller's Cheques? I tip my hat to your tenacity, Sir - producing 1,5 hr of snoozefest material is no mean feat! :-)

Rik Kershaw-Moore · February 7, 2024

What a superb video and it's great to see this being recorded for posterity. Although I can't help imagine Jasper Carrott's Wiggy Character nodding along to some of these, such as "Hello have you ever thought of collecting stamps..."

Mat (and anyone else here), you might be interested in Deyan Sudjic’s book Analogue: A Field Guide. It’s published next month and there’s a limited preview on Google Books: https://books.google.co.th/books?id=snPLEAAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gb_mobile_entity&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&hl=en&gl=TH&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false

Off topic but I just got my VR lenses. You didn't recommend the brand you got so I went with VR Lens Lab. They cost almost as much as the stupid Oculus did in the first place but they work great And still the only thing I've used them for is Google Earth VR

Unfortunately (?) I’m going to have to sit out the future of spatial computing. I’m OK with this.

A real tour de force Mat! Really appreciate all the work you must have done tp put this video together.

Thanks for this, Mat. I fell asleep soundly listening to it last night.

Seeing I'm the guy who has around 4000 vintage UK TV adverts on the hard drive, you can betcha bottom postal order I'm gonna watch all of this. 😀

T
Tim Stamps · February 3, 2024

Thanks for the digitalizing of this Mat. For what it's worth (and will probably never be watched all the way through) I just may add it to my Stamps archive. :)

Grattan always reminds me of Hale and Pace's 'Scouser song', as it contained the line "Derek Hatton works for Grattan, modelling jumpers with a very nice pattern!"

Thanks Matt, I share your feelings in regards to doing what can seem like endless hours archiving! Well done 😁

W
William Squires · February 3, 2024

I don't know why - but it tickles me that the 'Post Office' logo slide is clearly a cut out photograph of the physical sign that adorned Post Offices, rather than a graphic.

Gareth R · February 3, 2024

Grand job on undertaking this archive Mat. Well done. On a complete tangent - I tried using the AirPods Pro2 to watch a film via Apple TV that you mentioned a while back. Top tip as it was rather good; sound quality along with the spatial effect make it a great option for no disturbance solo screening. Thank you.

Techmoan · February 3, 2024

I’m glad it proved to be a useful tip. I’m still using them for my late night viewing.

Nice bit of nostalgia, not that I saw the original. £62 in today's money for that Queen video, insane. Can't see them selling many copies.

W
William Squires · February 3, 2024

I bet they did! Never underestimate the excitable monarchist £ in the UK... every time there's a royal occasion they line up to buy commemorative tat which charity shops then throw in the bin after they die because nobody wants it... In fairness contemporary video releases were just expensive. The mid-80s Doctor Who VHS releases were £24.95 RRP, which is £74.10 today. The earliest ones were £40 or £130 today!

That's a big effort Mat, much appreciated. The U.K Post Office seemed far more interactive and commercial than Australia Post (then G.P.O) i grew up with in the 1970-80's. EDIT: Finally got the Russ Abbot Basildon Bond joke thanks to this video!!!.

A
Andrew Shaw · February 3, 2024

I did not make it very far in. Your "novelty" comment is right on the money.

D
David Boddie · February 3, 2024

It really is a window into a different era. Maybe it's the medium, but the sales pitch is remarkably unsophisticated. The Premium Bonds advert is a case in point: https://youtu.be/VSrPrLpS_0o?t=1515

A
Andrew Torrance · February 2, 2024

Oh - while I remember, Mat: I really hope you do a show about the 4K pinball machine those guys are supposedly sending you. This time last year, I was dead-set on buying a full-sized version of the original until I sobered up. I'm not sober now.

T
Techmoan · February 3, 2024

We'll see if it turns up. I haven't had a shipping notification yet. I suspect once they weigh up the costs of international shipping, things might go very quiet.

A
Andrew Torrance · February 2, 2024

They're torture devices for the poor sods who had to work in the Post Office. My first job upon leaving school in late 1985 was in WH Smith. Despite being a diehard Slade fan, 'Merry Xmas Everybody' still brings me out in hives.

S
Stavros Karatsoridis · February 2, 2024

Out of curiosity my wife and I looked on eBay for a copy of that video about the Queen that was advertised on the one cartridge. We didn’t find one. Evidently the Post Office’s offer wasn’t very compelling. 😛

T
Techmoan · February 2, 2024

It was advertised on three of these carts too. My family got our first VCR in 1985 and I started buying tapes in the very late 80s when the sell-through market had appeared and HMV were selling tapes at £13.99. You’d have to be a bit odd to buy a documentary about the Queen in 1984.

G
Grace Robbins · February 2, 2024

Oh, I certainly hope you don't have n̶i̶g̶h̶t̶m̶a̶r̶e̶s̶ dreams about stamps and/or overly cheerful ladies and gentleman urging you to buy hoola hoops and videos of Queen Elizabeth II. You're a good man for compiling these for posterity's sake. 😵 My phone almost autocorrected that to 'posterior.'

J
Jamie Howle · February 2, 2024

Fair play to you for doing this. These would be lost without your work. You can retire from video making now that you have hit the pinnacle 😂👌

D
David Fulton · February 2, 2024

The video came on an I saw the "1:29:06" an my heart sank in sympathy! 90 minutes of footage is hours and hours of work! The audio superb and, frankly this is probably better looking and better sounding than it would have ever been when it was due and played back on those tinny projectors. I think there must be stamp people in the UK who are as bonkers as train people when it comes to stuff like this, and I am quite sure they would be over the moon to have this to watch. You've done yeoman's service!

A
Alan Lee · February 2, 2024

I've just dipped in at a few places so far, e.g. 27:30 - and I'm finding it quite spooky and chilling in places, kind of like watching a Protect & Survive clip. Feels older than the 80s.

T
The Jejuni · February 2, 2024

This is preserving important ephemera. There were models, photographers, announcers, audio technicians, and writers who had to put all these together, and now we can see their work. ❤️

And I was wonderin' what I was going to do on a lazy Friday evening, (in the states), while settling down with a home-made ramen noodle bowl, (peas, ham, and cheese)...
