ODDCAST MARCH 2026
It’s Oddcast time again. Bit of a mixed bag this one, so it won’t all be of interest to everyone. Please use the chapters to skip any sections that don’t appeal and/or overstay their welcome.
Here’s the link to this March 2026 Oddcast video (there’s no audio rip version this time). https://youtu.be/_tm2hHZ7seQ
...and here’s a link to the other rather lacklustre video I made this week, which gets a brief mention in the update: https://youtu.be/rJL5EP9xoDs I realised during editing of this update that the suggestion of putting videos like this on a ‘second channel’ is likely to come up, but having the one regularly updated public channel to worry about is enough for me.
Anyway have a good week, take care and enjoy whatever remains of your Sunday (if you’re reading this on a Sunday).

I’m glad I joined the Patreon today. Unfiltered Mat is worth the price of admission. Also, congratulations on not drinking for a year…for better or worse.
Yes, I too joined Mat's patreon this very day and so glad I did. I really enjoyed seeing the 'other side' and as you say, unfiltered Mat is such a good watch. I have been watching Mat's videos for about 12 years now and have said from day one that he should've been on the telly.
I'm late to the party with my comment but as somebody using projectors and TV's on and off for 25 years now: There are two major reason when you should go for a projector. It always comes down to size. If you want a bigger screen that a TV cannot provide (say 100 inch and more) you have to go with a projector. And then you have the big benefit of being able to sell it again on ebay if you want to upgrade. Try to sell a 100 inch TV - good luck with that. Nobody will come to pick it up. Secondly, the picture of a projector really is like a cinema experience. I don't know how to put it but watching a reflected picture is more natural than watching something that emits light directly to your eyes. In nature we only see reflected light. It is different. And you are right - if you want the picture quality of an OLED - you won't get is with projectors under 10.000€ - and even then it only comes close. And there we go again. If you want the cinema experience and maybe 150 inch or more - these projectors can give you that experience. A TV will never be able to do that.
I'm currently in the design phase of my next apartment (under construction) and one of the things that will get renovated is my home theater setup. I saw this oddcast and I immediately gravitated towards the Sony Theatre Quad. I'm a Sony fanboy, so it doesn't take much to convince me to buy Sony gear. Heck, even my phone, TV and AV receiver are all Sonys. So I watched some reviews of the Theatre Quad, and they're all glowing. However, I realized that I'm gonna have to get an expensive subwoofer and that owning this speaker setup will negate my AV receiver (only a few months old!). And it'll mean that I can't hook up my turntable without resorting to ugly hacks, which kind of defeats the purpose of owning such a clean setup. So... back to passive speakers I go.
Yes it’s a very good but restrictive system. Ideal for use with any projector where sending wires to and from the projector to an AV amp is problematic, or just with a TV, but yes it’s just a one trick pony.
I've found that the Amazon Basics cables are pretty decent (especially for the price). They don't look fancy, but they're well built and work absolutely fine.
I enjoy the tasteless food videos. My channel's views seem to follow no rhyme or reason. I put a lot of research into a 25-minute video about Macrovision and it got a third of the amount of views as an 8-minute video about an old radio I found at the thrift store.
We hang around with Techmoan because we like Techmoan the way it is...and the way it is includes the way in changes...as we all do with time. As long as you're interested, we're interested. Stay safe. Enjoy yourself.
Interesting as always, Mat. Hope the tooth thing works out OK. Thanks for the info about Pluggy - I shall keep that one in mind, I've often had similar problems. About the noise level device, I occasionally used to go (under protest) to a sort of 'working men's club' where they had live bands. There was one of these on the wall beside the stage, and if it went red for 5 seconds, it would cut the power to all the bands' amps! It would not come on again until someone went into the office and reset it. It didn't take long to ensure the sound volume stayed at a level that also allowed conversation. Brilliant!
Please keep making the food review videos, they are very interesting. I've even ordered some of the cup noodles from Japan that you have previously reviewed, since they looked really nice.
I like that video about the Electronic noise management system a lot! It made me laugh, and it's something I can share with lots of people to make them laugh as well (the siren! :D ) :)
I’m liking that simple little plug idea (The Pluggy). So simple, and yeh, I’ve definitely come across these situations you found yourself in. Nice one, gonna have a look at how much they are now. Cheers Matt. Lee
Ferraris ARE made of jelly though, Matt. Also, if you look close enough, there is a cheesy texture to the moon… 🌖 /🧀 I’m just saying, mate. YouTube armchair comments are LEGIT!!
Nice to see a food review back, I always enjoyed them. I think that they make a suitably irreverent interval in the video (and also I get to see various weird and not-so-wonderful meals, thus saving me the cost, effort, and disappointment of trying them for myself...)
Those 7" sound effects records are indeed for internal use, as you can see them being cued up on the televised Last Goon Show Of All in 1972! Mind you, they always turn up on eBay. I've got a couple myself! Weirdest collection I have is a set of 7" BBC records that came from a jukebox installed at reception at Broadcasting House, where anyone waiting there could pop a coin in and choose a three minute excerpt of something from the BBC's history!
add me to the group of folks who enjoyed the "sound management system video." I get your point about meeting certain expectations with a large audience. wonder if it's just a matter of branding? LGR has his whole "oddware" sub category, maybe you need the same for stuff like this: "techmoan's tech groans." (i'll see myself out.)
I could do with a brand for the quickies - perhaps I should use quickie…but sometimes they’re not all that quick, just a bit sub-par.
I loved the weird food review! Food with a bit of tech built in!
agreed. what a bizarre contraption.
Those plug adapters look good, may come in handy as someone put the radiator pipe across one of my plug sockets in the lounge, so I've been looking for a solution, I'm also not drinking ( since November ) and if anything i feel worse
More dodgy food reviews please
You can look through subscribers and see when they subscribed. I suspect Mr African didn't sub 10 years ago.
You’re probably right - I can’t remember who they were now, it’s all been deleted from my history as I don’t like to associate with nutters, present company excepted.
I did like the lunch review. I don't drink alcohol either anymore and don't buy the non-alcoholic stuff, it's way too expensive for what it is. I do miss it once in a while.
Enjoyed your lunch video very much, Mat. Using quicklime to heat food is interesting! I also enjoyed seeing that you have an OXO measuring jug. I have a mini version for measuring cocktail ingredients - quality! 😊👍
I love that Sound management system video. Such a weird device, but fascinating. Thank you for sharing it!
1:40 - "It's not a channel about one particular thing" Not to be a weirdo, but to me the channel is about you! You're an interesting guy and you show us interesting things in your interesting ways. That's really what's I love about the channel.
+1
I reckon you're spot on about Look Mum No Computer, Mat. He's completely genuine, which makes it all the stranger that he's been selected for Eurovision. I only Pateronise three creators - you, Anders Enger Jensen and Sam Battle. Have done for years. I woke up last week to the news that Sam was the UK's pick and I thought I was still asleep. It's mental, but life-affirming.
Eurovision was the longest I sat watching something on TV in the last twelve months so I will definitely be watching this years and will probably vote for a couple of acts. I don't feel the need for anything bigger than a 32" TV to watch it on though.
I always enjoy when you include a food review in these updates. Remind me of the early days when you reviewed some kitchen gadgets. A change of pace. Watched the unreleased video... I thought it was a funny and well made video about a not very interesting product. In my humble opinion I don't see any issues with shorter length videos every now and then. Quality over length is the reason I do or don't watch something. If you make a video you like that's 12 minutes and it's done- I hope you don't feel the need to pad it out. Sorry I'm rambling.
Can you make a video about Bluetooth adapter for high end headphones (with 2 headphone jack inputs. Something like BTunes Bluetooth Headphone Adapter (2.5mm Model). I would like some but seems very niche and unclear what is good quality and long enough battery life.
Unfortunately things like that just don’t make good videos - or at least they don’t if I’m making them.
The self-cooking noodles reminded me of when Richard Hammond accidentally roasted his nuts: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_M2JY5ax3Hs As with most topics, I''m pretty sure I'm not representative of the wider Internet (so feel free to ignore my input), but I like your daft food videos. Duck Blood noodles makes me simultaneously curious, appalled, and hungry.
I'm thinking of Ashens and his self-heating Christmas Dinner in a can from about fifteen years ago!
I find the chatty nature of the oddcasts incredibly appealing, this one included, so thank you. It's never occurred to me to contact a video maker to enquire where "this week's" video is. Sure, I'd love to watch one of your videos every week, but if there isn't one I'll just shrug and go on with my life, and assume you're going on with yours. I wonder if in the past people contacted TV channels when there was a gap in broadcast. I'd like to think people once understood that things take time to make, but they probably did, we just never heard about it. I hate the wastefulness of that heating mechanism in the meal you tried, but I do find those segments interesting in general, and I actually wouldn't mind seeing you try an MRE (i.e. a military ration pack), just as a novelty. (The connection being that those often have those heating packs, or "flameless ration heaters", as they're known, as the means of heating the meal). Just a regular, in-date, one, though, and not one of the various ones certain YouTubers might try that are anywhere from 10-100 years old (yes, that's a thing, and oddly fascinating they are, too, after getting them out on a tray and experiencing a nice hiss from the package). Hope the dental problem gets sorted soon, and thanks again.
I suppose in the past people would look at a TV schedule and see that a programme isn't on. I actually did that yesterday. I find that with Youtube there is more good content than time. There again I ended up watching Matt's video on CD Video again this morning (linked from Wikipedia) after someone posted 1989 adverts for a Sharo boombox capable of playing them on Stereo2Go.
Just a quick one on the lava lamp. It is very nice but hard to see against the white background.
Yes I’m probably going to have to try a dark lava instead.
I've tried stewed goat twice at different Jamaician/Carribean spot. Always has the bones in it apparently
I recognize that center console, with the V2L outlet, and the floor mats. Looks like it could be in my car (except that the pedals are on the wrong side, and it's the wrong socket). Don't know if you've mentioned this car before (I just realized I missed the January Oddcast). I've had mine for little over 5 weeks now, and have been loving it, but I haven't used the V2L yet.
I haven’t mentioned it, swapped cars a month or so ago.
Very enjoyable part of my Sunday, thanks Mat! That bit about YT commenters blatently lying reminded me of "Aldrige Prior - he's a terrible liar" from Viz - my favourite being "I invented Quavers"! YT these days is a bit of a state really, I just hope it continues to allow you to do what you like to do without too much hassle. Re: MRIs, interesting to hear that - I've had two (brain and cardiac) and didn't feel dizzy afterwards that I remember. Hope you get your teeth sorted!
Great video, I always love these oddcasts.
I've been getting comments about why I'm not outputting as many videos as I used to. I'm doing 2nd channel videos about computers, and I'm moving to the UK right now, packing up the house, so video production is down. That's just how it is. These people are getting videos for free, and they're complaining! I don't pay much heed. It's my channel, I'll do what I like.
We Demand MOAR FREE content!!!😉 Say, you couldn't by any chance sneak me into a shipping carton to take along with you?😁
YouTube comments will now have to move on to "We can tell your videos are made in China now". Presumably the real Matt is still in the spare room making videos about a CD walkman with puppets at the end.
Just watched the Eurovision entry from L.M.N.C. and found it very Eurovision-y. Definitely a good pop tune showing Sam's homemade retro-tech style.
I’m just not qualified to comment as my musical interests are rap, hip-hop, funk,R&B, a bit of Jazz, that kind of thing…so unless it fell into that area I really wouldn’t have a clue if something was good, bad or indifferent as it’s just not my bag.
Your no-alcohol story mirrors mine (I do have the occasional glass of whisk[e]y once every month or so), I don't feel any different or healthier.
• The people who bug you about 'no videos this week' must be extremely annoying. Certainly not as annoying as the people asking vaguely flimsy questions in the hope that you haven't gone deathly ill again. 😶🌫️ • Bees Knees heard you talking to yourself (again) and took it as an appropriate time to GTFO. • You imbecile! Ferraris are made of cream puffs, not jelly! 😡 • That food is inedible 🤢 and nauseating. But the self-heating feature is pretty cool. • Suggestion for a fun(ny) video - a 'previously on Techmoan' with rapid-fire clips of your prior videos that keep going further back in time (with rather flimsy references) until it's sort of related to the topic that you want to talk about in the current video. You have the volume of videos to do that. • You could utilize the TM Extras channel for 'C grade videos'? • That sound level stop light concept is nothing new. In my elementary school cafeteria (around 1986-89?) we had one of these. It blinked at yellow and it had a red alarm siren. I did some googling, it was either the 'Talk Light' or 'Yacker Tracker.' One early version was manually controlled instead of automatic. You could possibly 'add more meat to the bone' on the video by exploring the historical aspects. Although I'm confused by the call center suggestion, because talking is the job. I guess workers should stop taking any more calls. 😏 • Your discussion of alcohol reminds me of some police bodycam traffic stop videos I've been watching lately. When the driver is asked "how much have you drank tonight?" the answers are always "1-2" and the officer ends up seeing 1-2 empty Fireball bottles on the floor, a half empty one in the console, and after the DUI arrest find 3 unopened in their purse or backpack. 😲 Footnote: I have a love of champagne, and the substitute of sparkling grape juice is so outrageously priced I might as well get the real thing. This month will be interesting. I'm going to be moving into a fixed-place 'caravan' or otherwise known as a 'fifth wheel camper' for an indefinite time period starting in April - because I'm broke. As such I'll be dealing with extreme downsizing and frustration. Fun times. Take care 🤍
When I heard Mat call that meal, "self-heating" I heard "self-EATING" and thought, what's the purpose of buying a meal that eats itself?🤔😃🤢 Good luck on your new digs Grace, hope you make out all right. I have a stepsister who lives in a camping trailer at a trailer park in Reno. It's smaller than a 5th wheel I believe, but she gets on okay--even has a couple of dogs.
Regarding that electronic noise manager, I've got a "better😉idea" for the alarm when the volume is exceeded. Rather than a siren going off, you have the sound of a single gun shot. Hey it works in the movies! Picture an old west scene where the sheriff walks into a noisy saloon and fires a gun at the ceiling--it all goes dead quiet in an instant! Anyway, thanks Mat for another informative Oddcast!🙂
Another thumbs up for the lunch segments. Thanks for another very enjoyable oddcast
Funnily enough, when I saw the email about this video coming in, I though that we hadn't had a noodles test in a while and it would be nice to see one again. Well, thank you! And I wouldn't mind the occasional brief video about lesser topics. But then again, a few years ago I watched you opening a huge bag of Minidiscs and going trough them... so maybe I'm not representative for standard audience.
To be honest Mat I wasn't interested in lava lamps until I watched your videos 😎 now I'll probably annoy the misses by buying one.
I rather like your rubbish and nonsense videos, don't stop making them.. at your own pace 😁
That Charlize joke killed me :) also keep noodling.
Hello Mat, Enjoyed this oddcast video very much and the food part. I have dental pains my self at the moment so I know what your talking about. I don't care how long you take to put a video out personally. All the best Thanks
Where's that rug in your living room from, Mat? I do like that.
It was from Next. The first one came with a big rip in it, which wasn’t ideal, but it was quickly replaced.
Another +1 for the lunch segments. I enjoy the flicking between different topics in the oddcasts; they have a rhythm to them that is enjoyable to watch.
When the Mrs is away and the weather's on the cool side, I'm working towards being a Kumchi pot noodle connoisseur, adding some diced fried egg or some Asian sauce found in the fridge door. So, I look forward to your lunchtime experiments.
I do enjoy the lunch segments. It reminds me of my own experiences trying new things. I guess the saying is true "Misery loves company."
