Funeral Tapes

A bit of light entertainment to finish the weekend off on a high.

https://youtu.be/gLwO4rdis6Q

Nothing really of note to add that to this, but hopefully it’ll be received better than the chess robot video. I think it should do fairly well, after all who doesn’t love everything to do with funerals?

Have a good week.

And this is why I love your channel, Mat. Brilliant! 🤣

Hello chief! I have to admit I’m not necessarily one for the pure technologic, but I am, however, one for the funerary arts and audio. I saw your video here on happenstance and was wondering where you sourced this as I was completely struck by the notion and audio here. Best wishes.

T
Techmoan · March 10, 2026

It was from an eBay seller in the US who mostly deals in 4-track carts and other items presumably sourced from estate sales and the like.

This really made my Saturday evening and took my mind off a lot of turmoil ànd worry, so thank you very much for that.  I can honestly say I'm proud to be a Patron!

Wow,finallyyou did a very erm...intersting video about something i woulx never want to own. A couple of thoughts, i wasgetting very strong," the Munsters" vibes watching this, may have been better filming in black and white. Also, you could have saved thisvideo u til after your sad demise with specific instructionsto be played on the week of your funeral, sort of a last goodbye video. P.S. Have you considered the fact that it may be haunted!!!!!! 😂😂

D
David Fulton · March 7, 2026

Another clue about the year or years involved, both alpha-numeric and numeric-only phone numbers are used in the company labels that you showed for the component and the advertising. That would definitely put in the 1964-1966 range when essentially both systems were in use in the US. (Did the UK do this? Have lettered prefixes with cute names to help with remembering phone numbers? MAyfair 07-1245 for example.

T
Techmoan · March 7, 2026

The whole ‘Dial 1-800-PANTS to order your slacks’ thing never happened here. Telephone numbers were only referred to by the numbers

n
nownow · March 5, 2026

Not what I expected-?! My first thought was, it must be a kit a terminally ill person would order, so they could record a message to play at their own funeral. Why bother with a tape if not to record on? I wonder how common these were. Excellent video as always!! :^)

"Organ J Chimes" sounds like "Organ n' Chimes", a very typical typo given J and N are almost next to each other on the keyboard

T

Awww, I thought you'd have gone with "*below* ground music" right at the end there! All your videos are well received here - intriguing and engaging stuff, with a humorous flair 🌟

R
Rick Parsons · March 2, 2026

I presume that is would come with a sealed lead-acid pack but even so 50 charges sounds a bit low. You said, and it looked like, four track. so how come it worked with an 8 track cartridge. Lived the shot from 16:35 "ON AI' so now we know how you make these videos!

T
Techmoan · March 2, 2026

At 09:35 the specs show it was using an Alkaline battery. The carts are Fidelipacs, the 8-track cart had an internal pinch roller. My video about Muntz Stereo-Pak explains the connection between these and 4-track carts. https://youtu.be/Uqoglkbe9sc

G
Gadgetman · March 2, 2026

I doubt you'd get a content match on such poor quality audio. I enjoyed the video, especially your ode to Dave. You could be a stand up comedian Techmoan.

P
Pete Hepple · March 2, 2026

That was a beautiful service, I'd like to think Dave would've been looking down with a little tear in his eye watching that. However we all know he'd actually have been looking up, screaming in fiery agony. Good old Dave.

R
Ryan Smith · March 2, 2026

You need a long mic cable if you’re going to work the crowd.

M
Mat Reynolds · March 2, 2026

Some 'hymn facts' for you: That version of 'How great thou art' is a very dirgey version. It's possible you might receive a copyright flag for it as its actually a fairly newish hymn - in fact, if this device was made in the late 60s, then it would have been less than 20 years old at the time of this recording! The bells are chiming the hymns tune 'Cleansing Fountain', usually used for the hymn 'There is a fountain'.

R
Rick Parsons · March 2, 2026

Copyright 1953. When sung, and it still is, it is quite rousing. I doubt you will get a copyright strike though, as hymn publishers don't tend to claim - otherwise it would put all livestreamed services out of business.

T

I wish everyone I met was as positive as you Lee.

L

I also love that birds eye view of the DJ set up you have there… you could quite easily take requests at the funeral. Shabba 😁

L
Lee Coles · March 2, 2026

This is great as you looked AND sounded like you had a load of fun doing this video. And nope, I never knew or thought this would be a thing. Plus… 2 grand 60 years ago, that’s one hell of an outgoing 😂 Cheers for this, Matt. Lee

A

suitably niche! Lets hope the YouTube algorithm doesn't bury this 😅

M
MrHammond · March 2, 2026

Funeral starts with fun 🤣. Needed that (sick at home 🥴🤧) The style of music reminds me of Diamonds are Forever, that was apartently fashion in the US for funerals back then...

T

Get well asap, as soon as I heard the (Hammond?) organ, I thought of you.

S

J
Joseph Dougherty · March 2, 2026

Brilliant. A Techmoan high point! As for music to be played at my funeral, I'm hoping for that jazzy little repairing-a-cartridge number.

B
Brad Jones · March 2, 2026

I'm just imagining it being modified to take the 2XL cartridges... "Ashes to ashes..." "Is the correct answer! David Bowie's 1980 UK No 1 single was indeed called Ashes To Ashes. You don't need to bury YOUR knowledge of British pop history!"

M

You're killing it.

A
Antonio Monfermoso · March 1, 2026

Nothing like going out in style 🤣

C
Chris Horry · March 1, 2026

The price seems fairly reasonable if you add up the cost of the transformer, microphone, briefcase, speakers and putting the whole thing together. Presumably the tapes came with it also. I have an image of a crusty old funeral director in the 1960s receiving this thing, and handing it off to his young employee saying "look, just figure it out will you, we'll use it for Mrs Smith's funeral on Tuesday". I hope it worked a bit better brand new than it does now!

D
Duncan · March 4, 2026

I suspect it relied quite a bit on the battery for voltage stabilisation and hum suppression.

M
Mark Elliott · March 1, 2026

Brilliant. That ending was the funniest thing I’ve watched in a while. RIP Dave ⚰️⚰️

D
Dave Curran · March 1, 2026

I remember going to the funeral of a friend of my Grandfathers, the music he had chosen to be played was John Lennon's Imagine. "Imagine there's no heaven......."

T
Tunix · March 1, 2026

Despite its bizarre, cobbled-together nature, it still works roughly sixty years later. That alone is an achievement in itself, and one for which Louis was certainly well paid.

T
Techmoan · March 1, 2026

I think that is all down to the Japanese engineering prowess of Maruwa Chemical.

A
Andrew Torrance · March 1, 2026

Better be careful with this one, Mat. You might get a copyright strike from God. Update - Oh - now having watched the show, you cover that. Apologies. A lesser man would simply delete the comment, but I'll leave mine here as a warning to future generations.

T

Funeral story: A friend's husband died and had a lovely funeral at the funeral home. When it was over they played recessional music while the family exited the Building. I thought Elvis' "Are You Lonesome Tonight" was an interesting choice. When I got outside, the widow was in tears laughing. Apparently the recessional music was on *the other side* of the cassette they gave the funeral home to play.

A
Asaf Sagi · March 7, 2026

Please tell me it was the "laughing version" of Are You Lonesome Tonight

I haven't hit this one yet but I expect the chess robot will have a long tail if the product actually officially launches. I'm keeping my eye on it because I actually think it's pretty good. It's what I would want. People will search it. Anyway that has nothing to do with this week but I said it

T
Techmoan · March 1, 2026

Well I hope you’re right, but I suspect the video will quite likely sink without a trace. No more chess for me for a while.

c
cbx · March 1, 2026

I appreciate the director's choice to play the music to us as if we're looking down from the heavens.

I’ll let the monopod know that it’s appreciated.

G
Grace Robbins · March 1, 2026

• This music must have frightened and/or angered all of the cemetery's dearly departed. • Flip off, Louis. I'm going to buy a REAL vibraharp and organ orchestra for 𝘮𝘺 funeral. • Whilst the morticians are otherwise occupied I will record AC/DC onto all of the carts and all of the tracks. • YOU did it! The inevitable 'you can't spell 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 without 𝘧𝘶𝘯' pun. 😁 • 'Wards Riverside Stereo' also took away Muntz's dignity. 🤨 • Damn, you could find one of these handy for four-track cart demos: https://ebay.us/m/7D43jX • Everyone should do this for their FUNeral 😂: https://youtu.be/JEXIEneoA20 • I remembered this clip from a prior video (the playlist features Funeral music 😆) and I don't know why: https://youtu.be/MFOM3W2FBfA&t=0m11s • I think it would be funny to play 'Poison' By Bell Biv DeVoe at a funeral when homicide is suspected. Take care. 🤍

T
Techmoan · March 1, 2026

Shot through the heart… - I’m sure someone could come up with a proper funeral playlist. I have been eyeing the Porta Four machines, it’s funny to think that all of this is only achieving the same job.

A
Andrew Tomlinson · March 1, 2026

Great video, nice to see interesting things in cases back, the first three bells on the second track sound like the intro to the sitcom Bless this house

B
Bob Bell · March 1, 2026

Yup, this has 1960s USA plastered all over it! As a 70 year old man of faith who grew up about 150 miles from where this was manufactured, let me give you my thoughts: Unless you have the name pronounced that would keep it as “Lewie,” I would almost guarantee that it would be pronounced “Lewis” in the plains of the U.S. I think closer to St. Louis than the Kingsman version of Richard Berry’s “Louie, Louie.” Also, those bells are called Carillon Bells. It would have been common to play hymns in the church tower on the occasion of a funeral to let the town know someone had died. Here’s a fun fact: In the 70s I actually played the carillon bells for St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in the same Oklahoma City, where I was studying Opera. To tell the truth, I played them so badly, I only played them once. They never asked me to play them again. Thanks for the video.

T
Techmoan · March 1, 2026

I did a search online and US sites convinced me to pronounce it like Louis Armstrong…this is one of those cases where I knew whatever I did definitely wouldn’t be right - but I got a bit tired of saying it twice, once for each option, so I picked one of the two wrong options.

P
Pietro Gagliardi · March 1, 2026

Foreground music, background music, this is below-ground music, and that Boeing 757 tape player from British Airways you covered back in 2020 would be above-ground music... I think you've got music for all directions now. Left-ground and right-ground?
