Patreon Oddcast Video for September 2025
It’s time for a Patron only video. Unfortunately my energy levels are a bit depleted at the moment, so please only watch this one if you’re happy with a low-key experience.
https://youtu.be/wFeQwnindoI
If you choose to skip this, rest assured that you won’t be missing out on any ground shattering news.
I’ve also uploaded this as an audio version (in a separate post) so you could listen to an old man mumble on for an hour while you wash your car or something. Enjoy(?)

Its never too late to celebrate the most exciting times of tech. Your content is ever green.
I'm very late in watching this. By now your marriage should have lasted a whole lot longer than comedian Ken Dodd's who got the last laugh against the tax man by getting married just two days before he died. Congratulations on some astute financial planning.
I watch Techmoan videos for the presenter, as dire as that sounds. Do I skip a video or two from time to time? Yes, but I always return. If you make videos, I'll watch them. if you don't make videos, well, that's your right. I'm starting to waffle here when all I mean to say is keep doing what it is you want to do.
My opinions are like smoke rings in a windstorm. However, behind the scenes inside a gritty gambling den run by a green guy in a leather jacket, I'm betting how long your 'blue shirt video streak' will last. Especially the seashells and tunafish. 😏 I hope your hand is feeling better today.
Can some of us do some moderation on the comments for you?
I suppose it’s a possibility, but I feel for now the best option for me at the moment is just to look the other way.
Thanks for the update. I hope you keep making videos, as I really enjoy them.
I've just had a glaucoma eye operation that was urgent in March!, lots of docs and other drugs deciding what was west for me I had it yesterday and other eye in a few months. I have fortnightly blood tests, and thankfully everything is normal. Your content even as plain audio I find very entertaining and help keep my sanity along with R4Extra.
Maybe a sponsored segment for botox vapes is the one neat trick that takes YouTube videos to the next level, or gets them blocked by the algorithm. Definitely one or the other.
Having recently got "partnered up" with a long term female friend, yeah, "boyfriend and girlfriend" just sounds ludicrous when we're in our mid and late forties. "Partners" suits us fine! I enjoy being years out of this current time, to be honest. My television and music tastes certainly are, as are the methods of enjoying them!
Sadly we love a bygone era thats getting alot further away from the present day now and it really hit home for me when I got married last year and we gave this young woman working at the venue a CD with our music on for the ceremony and she was completely baffled as to what to even do with it, let alone how to play it. Was a bit of a cruel reality to us on how may years have evidently slipped away, since CD's were common place at such venues 😆
Sometimes, my brain still thinks of CDs as new! I remember seeing a display for the first time, circa 1985, in a branch of Our Price. Whilst the cassette/LP version was £5.99, the CD was £9.99. Funny how you remember these things.
The idea of just getting married via a website and ticking a box sounds very appealing. If I ever get married it will be just for similar legal/admin reasons tbh. I don't like a fuss or ceremonies either. Comments disabled on YouTube wouldn't bother me. I think if you've featured a product with no idea of some controversy that's nothing to do with you. One of the things I like about the channel is it's just about tech etc and not in any way political. The world is not a very kind or stable place these days, and having something to look forward to which is just on something pure and fun with no politics or judging people is a rare and precious thing in my opinion! So please keep on and ignore the rest of the world and trends, who cares what's cool or dated!
The "Qwnindol" in the video URL sounds like a medication.
Hi Mat loved this video .... not sure now if you will read this :) but as for checking out something new to present on your channel , but keeping with your style for future videos ... how about some local Lancashire History i have a Ditchburn Background Music Player here at the Museum that you could have, it needs some restoration ( new belts etc ) these were one of the first BGMs here in the UK ( competing with Reditune) during the 60s and 70s, they had huge rental contracts with Tesco and Fine Fare during that time and many restaurants and small retail outlets , i have lots of photos on the history of these that you can use in a vid would be great to see you doing your magic with one of these old machines, all the best for the future, Karl ( Ditchburn Jukebox Museum, Lytham St Annes) karl@jukeboxmuseum.co.uk
Just watching this and your comments about being of an older generation, have you seen "Extremely Inappropriate" on Netflix about a Japanese school teacher who is teleported from the 80s to current day and his struggles with the things he could do and say then but not now. My wife and I really enjoyed it.
You do a fine job of interesting stuff and long may it continue, and you might need a second story on your man cave next year at this rate.
I get the marriage thing, as it stands if I go under a bus tomorrow my partner gets zilch from my previous employer (my current one is a bit more enlightened and you can nominate literally anyone for death benefits & ongoing pension) but if we married that would all change. When my mum died, the paperwork side of things was very simple -since she was married to my dad. It was so simple when I heard a friend was about to pay £3000 for a probate solicitor I stupidly offered to help, took one look at the situation when unmarried and said 'I'm really sorry, looks like it will have to be a solicitor', though I did manage to find a solicitor for them for half the money, since it was still simple by their standards. The £3000 one was 'all you can eat' so I guess they hope they get 20 simple cases that should have been billed at £1000 for every genuinely tricky one.
Wish you all the best with your health and hope you can still make great videos for "our" generation! (even if I'm about 10 years younger) I think a lot of YouTubers I watch and focus on retro stuff are in one way or the other having the problem of "is there still something left to make a video about?", although: you alway surprise me with something I'd never heard about before, my hope is there that there is still more interesting stuff out there to discover!
I think that projector stand is great. It would work in my living room absolutely fine. Will have to run it through the approval committee. Oh and kudos on your workmanship, the wood nesting looks smart I was curious about the fan. For one I have used Sony cameras for years but only for still pictures so I never had any heating issues. For another I have worked on noise reduction for fans. I am not sure which type of fan that is, but I worked for webasto on car heaters. We did simulations to understand the effects and interactions of geometry on frequency, which was great fun. If it ever fails I'd be happy to poke in it's guts
A Botox vape that smooths out your brain. It's gonna happen.
Talking about wedding rings. When I was a kid my dad once tried to get his wedding ring off his finger and couldn't. He had his ring on his finger for so long that he just couldn't get it off and as he was very claustrophobic it was a horrible situation for him. He almost panicked. This might be the reason I never could wear any rings at all. The result: My wife wears a wedding ring and I don't even own one. We had two rings at the wedding for a few hours. Hers out of gold, mine was a cheap replica just for that day.
Not meant as a backhanded way of congratulations, but I can't be the only one who just assumed you were married this whole time? Like you said, I just figured you were saying "the missus" quite literally!
My philosophy is that if civilization broke down who would be there to tell you to make verbal vows or write on a document? If you want to be together, do it - or don't.
Journalists often say: “don’t go below the line” i.e. don’t read comments under something you’ve written. And last week the Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo podcast discussed comments and concluded: “never, ever read the comments”. You make great videos. Comments should be YouTube’s department. As you said, it would be much, much better to stop moderating comments entirely. Maybe even add a disclaimer to the standard video description, telling people that comments will not be read?
It's a balance between allowing people a forum to discuss and accepting the inevitable scourge of devisiveness be attached to your hard work. 🙁 I openly admit that I've made a few political comments here and I apologize for that. I stopped watching the news so I could have peace in my life - however long I have left of it, anyway.
Congrats on getting your paperwork sorted out, Mat! The YouTube comments section is the digital equivalent of graffiti on a public toilet cubicle wall, only the toilet smells less bad than the comments section.
Pragmatism thy name is Matt.
SUGGESTION: order another mac mini holder like the black one you got. Flip it and attach it so it comes out on the left. Then attach you ssd on that (instead of bungee cord to the arm as is) side opposite your mac mini. If you use this idea, i’d love a shout out 😀
I must say I've always loved your approach to things, it's very refreshing. At least I think it is. Anyway, I hope you'll continue making videos as long as you have the motivation to do so, because as you said they make me happy.
I admire the very pragmatic approach you take to challenging situations in life. Considering what a tough year you've had, I think you're doing remarkably well. On top, you've even managed to set up and equip a new studio. As for the sad state of the comment section, I too feel that online discussions have hit an all-time low. Social media platforms seem to actively cultivate the worst forms of human interaction in order to increase engagement. No wonder some people are losing it in the comments. Ignoring most of it is probably an act of self-defense at this point. Anyway, I continue to enjoy your videos, however niche the topic might be.
I know that feeling of annoyance with a ring. Ever since I got married, it drives me absolutely nuts. Maybe toe rings are the way forward for people like us.
World may have moved on, but I enjoy all your videos. However I also turn 55 next year.
I know just how you feel -- almost every day I wake up and feel like a new Rip Van Winkle. Has it been 10 years since yesterday? Feels like it. I've decided to just embrace my timeline slippage and now I've gotten into manual typewriters. If they can still work perfectly after 50-70 years in stagnation, maybe there's hope for me...
Thanks for the video, Mat. I hope the comments over here are like a warm bath to you, compared to some on YouTube 😉 If you ever get fed up with YouTube, please continue here. And consider us as your friend 🍀
I didn't tell my dad I got married until I invited him to my wife's family picnic. When he arrived I said "Be nice, these are your relatives now" and showed him my ring
Being married is great. It's such a pain in the arse for the missus to dump you, glorious inertia leads to a wonderful, relaxing life.
My mom's going through liver cancer right now. I will keep you in my thoughts.
• "Nothing ground shattering"? 😳 • It's good that your estate planning and funds are more assured for you and the Mrs. I always thought "common law marriage" or in other words "domestic partner" had the same rights as married folk. And they (usually) already have a bundle of kids. • Damn, I also wish I could go online and click 'Yes' to get married. And thus wait for the gentleman to show up at my door (Amazon Instant). • The Stand for the 'StanBy' 😛 • Your desk is becoming pleasantly cluttered. And awesome. • Here's a call back to your prior post about "never had hair." This young man apparently "never had hair" either: https://youtu.be/4iwsCNfQslw https://youtu.be/hTrhKDxJRKY And that's a good thing, in my opinion. ☺️ • The VidPix video didn't get the views it deserved. The oval graphic on the thumbnail sort of looked like an American Football if you look at it from a distance. Which is a weird observation. I have an unintelligent brain so I'm closing down now. Take care. 🤍
You have notes, I have notes. Your de rigueur shelves have quite a bit of reddish-orange. I like it. Green Acres was a 60s show from CBS (cousin to The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction). CBS spun off the syndication of those shows (and many others) to a new company called VIACOM. Eventually that was sold off ... and then recombined 40 years later ... and then Paramount got in there, which was owned by the same corp that bought Desilu and on and on and on. Basically, CBS owns everything now, including the rights to Green Acres and Star Trek. Oh! Right. Syndication. When I was a kid in the 1970s, alllll those shows were syndicated and after the soaps and game shows were done, it was "strips" of all those shows every day after school. So lots of North American folks Of A Certain Age were marinated in those when they were young. Don't follow the Steve Marshall guy you mentioned but follow his brother Geoff (I don't think they are brothers). And Jago Hazzard. And Big Clive. And Robslondon. And UK FM CB Radios and ... and ... and ... And I'm not even one of those Canadians that pine for the days of Empire (not even crazy about sharing a monarch as we do). But you (lot) are all a lot easier to take than what's on offer from, say, your former colonies to the south of me. Re: Comments. It's not always that people don't read the previous comments before posting, sometimes it's that they can't see the comments at all. What YouTube shows you in the comments isn't everything ever posted in order. At least some of those repetetive posts were posted in good faith because the viewer just never saw the same comment. If you disable comments, how will you know people are annoyed? People here on Patreon aren't going to complain. Have you tried to calculate (ha) how many useful comments you get from YT vs how many useful comments you get from Patreon? I assume that since we are all so smart (and good looking) that we provide you with the finest of useful comments. Or maybe not. If you don't turn them off, I get why you'd just do your best not to ever look at them ever again. The fatigue thing is a growing problem. I feel it even though I don't have issues similar to yours. Mostly its world events and the inability of *so* *many* people not understanding that we have been in this position before, we know the outcome, and we're just about the point where the Worst Case Scenario is inevitable. People that aren't fatigued by all that are probably part of the problem. Oh, and by the way, last summer was the coolest summer we'll ever have. So right there with you, Brother Mat. Not crazy about your occasional food reviews (in Oddcasts) but "eat up" everything else you show. Keep going as long as you care to!
I'm 44 and just came back for first trip to uk this evening (i've been in goodwood by car..some 3500 km in 6 days). I had no time to appreciate british lifestile but I attended an event where the most recent thing was a tow truck from the 60s and there were some 200K people enjoing. For us with interests numbers are irrelevant, I will appreciate a couple of interesting videos per year more than a weekly shot of nothing. Maybe the youngsters no, but we must pursue our own aim not other's ones.
Hi Mat Don’t bother with the negative comments as 99.9% of us love your content and look forward to watching something new, that we couldn’t produce ourselves. I’d enjoy watching you taking a banana apart. Thanks
Couldn't agree more, and I can only assume moderating comments is the worst part of being a creator on YouTube. I've no idea what the solution is, I did consider asking if you wanted moderators but I'm willing to bet you'd balk at the idea so just ignore my suggestion!
I like your videos Mat and hope you continue to do them. You have inspired me in alot in my vintage hifi fixes. You are making great use of your studio, it looks great.
Don't let the infinite hate machine that is the youtube comments section dissuade you from continuing, Remember, you have hundreds of thousands of views.. a tiny tiny fraction of the people are the ones hating on you, and they'd probably hate on any content they see. It's about them, not about you. The rest of us love your content. For whatever it's worth.. I think you are probably my favorite youtube channel.
Yes, "the world has moved on", but there are plenty of us left of your generation. I get it though, the feeling of running out of things to do videos on. At least you have a wider sphere of interest than just Minidisc and Compact Cassettes. Stick with it though, only for things that interest you. And all those years you've been together, and she still married you 😀 She's a saint.
I'll be 50 in, what, 11 weeks. I've been noticing over the last few years that the world is getting more and more stupid and incomprehensible. Whether it's the world or me that's at fault, I'm not sure. But I don't suppose it's going to get any better. Generation X problems - I guess, we're the forgotten generation, so unlike the boomers nobody's trying to get things to make sense for us.
Well Mat I always enjoy the British sense of not making a fuss. But I wonder if you're getting tired of what it is that you're doing and you're thinking that people are equally getting tired, by the way they're not, why don't you start reviewing something else. Like I was thinking how about Speedos, you don't see a whole lot of Speedo reviews. I often wonder whether or not a particular Speedo would fit me properly and how it would look if I were to wear it, so a speedo review channel might be just the thing.
I’m not doing Speedo reviews and then asking viewers to give a thumbs up.
Ok I've got to 40ish minutes now. :) There's this "rule" I keep seeing, 10-20% of people are idiots who will completely misunderstand or draw exactly the opposite conclusion from anything, no matter how carefully phrased. And that's before we get to the "well actually" chorus of know it alls. Nothing to be done about that except ignoring it I think. But I can imagine it's hard work if you've got a platform. For what it's worth, I've always enjoyed your videos. They feel honest. Just some British guy nattering away geeking out about stuff. Is it perfect? No. Does it have to be? No. Is any of this useful? Hell no, a lot of it is ancient weird and wonderful tech that somehow didn't quite make it after all. Is it interesting? Yeah. Bit of fun, end of the day, winding down with a cuppa tea. Perfect.
I'm very grateful for the time and effort you put into every video. Personally, I wouldn't give a fig about what trolls say, as I'm sure there's a large group who enjoy what you do. Thank you again.
Commiserations on your wedding and congratulations on your Dad dying??? Hopefully that was within the rules (and not too dark a joke). I’m exactly the same. My step-Dad died earlier this year and it was such a relief to everyone (including him). He was such an active and proud man and by the end he couldn’t even get dressed on his own and it was obvious he had given up and hated his life. Obviously it was sad but you could feel this overwhelming sense of relief at the funeral where everyone knew he wasn’t in misery anymore. The same with the wedding too. I didn’t want my family there, my wife didn’t want her family there, we didn’t want friends making a big fuss. So twenty years ago we flew to Las Vegas and got married in a drive through wedding at The Little White Chapel. Didn’t even have to get out of the limo for the ceremony, just wounded down the window and opened the sunroof. Even pre-paid for two witnesses for the official bit. After seeing all the stress and ALL the money friends have gone through for their weddings I don’t regret it one bit. Take care Mat.
Yup, getting married is by far the easiest way to get a whole lot of separate things organised, and cheapest if you skip all the fuss and drama and just go for the technical bit. It's also the easiest way for dealing with hospitals when you're in them, "husband/wife" shuts them right up, ok done sorted, box ticked, on with the business at hand. Otherwise you'd have to explain, check, fuss, bother etc. You could always make a fuss about it later should you want to. Or not. Sod expectations, you make the rules.
Appreciate the life updates, and wishing you the best with the ongoing health stuff. As far as YouTube goes, just skimming the comments on any given video makes my blood pressure go up, so I can only imagine how it feels as a creator! Even if 19 out of 20 comments are nice, it feels like the rude one always lingers. I hope you're able to find a healthy balance, and that doing this still brings some joy. As someone who's been watching your videos for about a decade, they've always provided a nice respite from the world's chaos, and I thank you for that.
Good call in getting married. It does help with the paperwork. Seen others do it too for just that reason. I also agree calling her "girlfriend" at your age is not a thing. If anything is would have sounded suspicious. Sounds like your dad got to the point some can get where they are ready to go and now he got the chance. Good on him. Specially if your medical stuff turns out to be something bad, he doesn't need to see that. Nice to see your new workspace coming together, It does look nice and the new videos with the new back do work well in my opinion.
Oddcast interruptus, because I am making Marmelade and it's canning time. We did the same thing with the wedding, for the same reasons and the same. Issue with rings. I got some carbide rings that I wear (sometimes) around my neck because it won't work. I do understand about your dad. I hope someone will turn off the lights for me at that point
Don't forget that a lot of us are of the same generation and we are also being left behind by modern trends. We still enjoy your sort of videos, even if you just make them for Patreon.
Well Mat, I wish you luck with your plan to ignore YT comments--it sounds like a reasonable thing to do, but it also seems like trouble always comes back no matter what. I got married in a judge's office at the county courthouse and also having no friends, we had my mom & dad as witnesses (the marriage also ended in a courthouse).👍 You may be old and your video topics may be getting more outdated and unrelatable to larger segments of the population, but us old geezers always find your rambles interesting--low energy or high.😀
Love the first shirt by the way! I was contemplating getting one myself a couple of days ago :) EDIT: FISH SHIRT, sorry I must've mistyped
I felt the same when my parents died. Their quality of life had degraded so much, it felt like a relief for everyone that they weren't suffering any more.
Easy to say I know, but I ignore dumb comments. I make the best argument I can, and people still point out things I've talked about, so I say don't worry about it. And I delete comments that aren't about the topic (political, religious). I consider all of those to be spam.
We are too old for girl friends. I call my girl friend my "partner" and people assume I'm gay.
I'm 23 and I call my partner of 2.5 years 'partner', it just sounds nicer!
Hey, Matt. Thanks, I look forward to these every month! Just a small anecdote about sometimes thinking the world has left you behind: I'm only a little younger than you, and have realised this week that I am one of the oldest people in the office at work these days. I don't know how that happened! Anyway, I hope you continue to enjoy putting out videos, and I (and thousands of others) will continue to be entertained by them.
Just want to say thanks indeed for all the videos which over the years have indeed made me happy and kept me entertained. I very much appreciate them - even the vid pix one.
Let me say this regarding the hostility online: Sadly this is the norm at the moment. The key is to not get involved. No matter how much your fingers itch. People on the whole fall into a few broad categories. The first category of people are not interested in listening. They are interested in talking and being heard. And they do that by commenting and spewing all sorts of rubbish. They don’t care what sort of reply they get, so long as they do get a reply. And as soon as that reply comes, they will jump on that and try to tie you up in a conversation that they can control (or at least they think they can control it). Another type of people is strictly speaking a subset of the above group. They are the ones commenting things like “What a load of rubbish! ACTUALLY there was another thingamajig that existed BEFORE yours so clearly you have no idea what you’re talking about!” They might be somewhat knowledgeable but they are often all obnoxious about it and try to make the entire convo about themselves and how good they are. And then there’s the group that just is incapable of being happy unless they have criticised something, anything really. Whether or not they have a point or not. And yet another type (you have mentioned it) is trying to “stir the pot” and cancel other people because they don’t like them or whatever. In other words: online drama and people getting on a high horse. Just stay away. None of this is your fault. I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Do your thing. I have read a quote the other day: You could be the ripest and juiciest peach in the world - and there’s still going to be someone who hates peaches. And now I will stop waffling on.
"Sign this and you're married" -> Welcome to Japan! IIRC the only obstacle as a foreigner is obtaining certification from your embassy that you aren't already married (US doesn't track that sort of thing nationally but they play along for the sake of the Japanese), but otherwise you show up at the town office on any office day, pay a nominal fee, and stamp the document. No witnesses. Most people do the paperwork six months or more before any performative wedding ceremony which is totally optional. (Maybe Japanese have had to endure too many pointless ceremonial events since childhood that weddings are now lumped in with the rest - I can certainly agree with the attitude!)
That civil partnership/marriage situation in the UK sounds crazy, with appointments! Me and my wife had to get married for visa/immigration reasons, and while we needed "witnesses", we just needed their signatures (well, this is Japan so their seals/inkan) on a paper. We dropped by city hall on a random Sunday and dropped the signed paperwork off, verified our ID, and then picked up the marriage license on a following weekday. Why would they require an appointment!!
Congrats to your dad for living a long life. No condolences here, just an acknowledgment of his life and a thank you to you for sharing part of yours with us.
Fingers crossed for a noodle review...!
Cheers Mat, I'm saving this to watch later. Curry tonight
It’s stopped raining here - so its a quick pizza in the outdoor pizza oven.
Great. Very sorry to have just realised you’re feeling a bit under the weather. I’ll take audio, text, potato-print… anything to keep up with you. Hope you feel better soon. Regards
