B&O Customised speaker - UPDATED

This was intended to be a quick and easy video to make, just a look at a speaker.

It seems I still don’t have my head in the game given how long it’s been since my previous upload. Perhaps the most frustrating thing is that after watching the final edit, I got the strong impression that it probably wasn’t worth making this one after all.

I should have followed my own rule that ‘speakers don’t make good videos’.

Nevertheless here’s the video, and it won’t take long out of your day.

https://youtu.be/WqRPwVRd-l0

Take care.

UPDATE - I added a minute in at the 7:35 mark where I talk about playback from a device that doesn’t distort.

I also snipped a few seconds out of the summary because I feel I may have been a bit too positive about the speakers’ sound quality. They’re just fine, but I do suspect modern bookshelf speakers might produce better results.

The updated version is the one embedded and linked to above.

I actually enjoyed this one and time lapse wire job. Actually considered buying a set.

Interesting video. Those speakers look like giant rocker switches.

Great video, makes the story about the B&O complete. 💪

Great video, and you're looking like you've almost back to normal to me!

I enjoy these tupe of videos so THANK YOU

I quite like the look of those speakers. I had an old pair of Philips bookshelf-styled speakers given to me a few years ago, and I went all-out urban stylee on it. Bright yellow grill material and vinyl wrapped it in a funky black and white city-scape design. The Bang & Olufson brand has always held my interest whenever I’ve seen some. Always going against the grain to be different… a little like me when I was younger 😂 Anyway, so happy to see normal service resumed, Matt. Lee

Oh my god Mat! I can see, as being a long time subscriber to you, no reason for you to think this is an inferior video. There's no way any enthusiast of your channel would be disappointed with this video. Please, please stop being so hard on yourself. Your true abilities far exceed what you think they are.

VWestlife · April 2, 2025

I suspect a lot of boomboxes and stereo systems have their volume control purposely designed to play louder at a lower volume setting, to make it seem more powerful, but then there's little to no difference between two-thirds and maximum volume. And almost all of them do have a loudness contour that emphasizes the bass at low volumes and gradually flattens out the response as you turn it up, but it's unusual for them to deliberately start reducing the bass above a certain point.

p
probnot · April 7, 2025

Yup! I've seen some boomboxes (Sharp I believe) that marked where the "loudness" was available on the volume range. I think it was the protect the speakers in the unit was being destroyed at loud volumes.

I liked that video. Do whatever you are interested in. Happy to see you doing much better.

Grace Robbins · April 2, 2025

Speakers are interesting when they're brightly colored - especially orange 🧡. I admire your ingenuity with the DIY speaker wire solution. You look and sound much better. How's your medical trial going? Do you still have a rancid sense of taste? Do you have any sense of smell at all? Take care and take it easy 🤍

I suppose I should go into all those things in the next proper Patron Update - a few need another week or so to call.

R
Rick Parsons · April 2, 2025

Great to see you back on form.

Dt91c · April 2, 2025

Interesting video. This reminded me that HiFi Berry make a product using a Raspberry pi and a small custom DAC and amp module that fits inside old B&O CX 50 speakers turning them into a stand alone streaming setup.

Raul Ramos · April 2, 2025

I think this was a nice follow up. It was a good reminder and hopeful message with the refurbished speakers. And I have a friend who is trying to salvage one of those old Dual all in one music center (cassette, Radio, vinyl) with din plugs. I'll share to show him what he has to do.

B
Brad Jones · April 2, 2025

The old spark, mannerisms etc are certainly returning. Compared to the "Proof of life" video, it's like night and day.

Peter Jensen · April 2, 2025

I Can only speak for myself, but if Matt went out to his garden, found a rock and talked about it for 15 minutes, i would still listen and support him, because he has earnt my respect through the hundreds of videos that his archive now holds. Techmoan = Quality

A
Andy Ihnatko · April 2, 2025

You've reminded me that I bought an upgrade/refresh kit for my Radio Shack Minimus 7 bookshelf speakers from a guy on eBay AGES ago and never got around to fixing them up. The box contains new foam, modern crossovers, and I think a modern replacement driver for the woofer. I really ought to get to that. I've owned the speakers since just after college and they'll make great desk speakers.

T
Techmoan · April 2, 2025

It’s not a job I’d relish…it feels like it needs some arts and crafts abilities, something I lack.

O
OzRetrocomp · April 2, 2025

Here's hoping the refurbisher of those speakers doesn't mind receiving hundreds of orders in a few days time. Or will the Techmoan Effect kick in?

T
Techmoan · April 2, 2025

Fortunately with him being on eBay they can only buy what he’s listed and there’s just a handful of things on there at the moment.

J
J Ruonti · April 2, 2025

I wouldn't say it wasn't worth making. I think just to let people know and think about refurbished speakers and thoughts on connecting them to the system was nice. I did rather enjoy this one. And it was the right lenght for a video about speakers.

D
Drew Tavendale · April 2, 2025

The first pre-release video I've had access to since joining and, no, it's not the most exciting, but I still enjoyed it (though, given I'll watch, and do, more or less anything and everything you put out, dashcams aside, that may not be particularly valuable). I was struck by you mentioning in a couple of the older oddcasts that I've been hoovering up that, in general, you don't see the point of videos about speakers because you can't really demonstrate how they sound. But 10 minutes like this, with a system/speaker pairing suggestion, highlighting of a currently available product, and the oddness of the volume behaviour was plenty to hold my attention. (Plus the weird timeframe dissonance I was experiencing, with your colour choice for these 1980s speakers feeling at the same time modern, as it's very similar to, for example, the LTT colour scheme, but also decidedly 1970s. But I really like that pop of colour against the otherwise very muted BeoSystem.) I'm not onboard with the "replacing the capacitors fixes everything" mentality, but in this case I suspect there's something wrong with the amplification circuitry, and that may be a good place to start - after all, the BeoSystem's internal speakers are less than 5W, and the BeoVox CX50 are 60W speakers with a higher impedance - it's asking a lot of an ageing system to drive them. Anyway, I hope a) that you don't think I'm talking out of my bum, and b) that your recovery continues well.

Evan Ritter · April 2, 2025

Another classic!

R
Rudy Rodriguez · April 2, 2025

I have a Hitachi Boombox TK-720WM from the 90s, and what I found interesting with this unit is that it has "Auto Loudness" where the loudness circuitry is activated on levels 1 through 4 of 10. I can't post a pic here, but if you go on eBay, you can see it more clearly on the volume control knob. Maybe the B&O boombox uses the same method/concept ?

T
Techmoan · April 2, 2025

Yes there was something that crossed my desk recently that did the same thing, it escapes me as to what it was.

J
Jac Goudsmit · April 1, 2025

I wonder if that volume control potentiometer has center taps with capacitors that are past their sell-by date. Some manufacturers did that as a built-in loudness control. If it has such capacitors, maybe you can remove or replace them and make the unit sound better at all volumes.

B
Buckaroo Bunny Slippers · April 1, 2025

Those orange and black speakers really pop! Why aren't modern day Bluetooth versions making these kind of inspired design choices?

S
Stephen Cairns · April 1, 2025

I bought some of that Amazon speaker wire this week! Good to see you're on the mend.

D
David Michael · April 1, 2025

This will be a hit, as you say.

K
Kristopher Baity · April 1, 2025

Great video. It seems like your strength and weight are slowly returning.

T
Techmoan · April 1, 2025

Yes I'm just hoping to keep my new waist size - so I'm not stuffing myself.

L
Laurie Dobson · April 1, 2025

Please don’t be so hard on yourself. We all understand and are just happy to see you back at it. Keep your p*cker up, friend! 💜

M
Matt Tester · April 1, 2025

A great showcase of the refurbished speakers, I really like the look of the CX100s in the same colour scheme.

S
SheddyIan · April 1, 2025

I enjoyed this shirt video. The styling of the B&O speakers was intriguing and love your colour choice! Could the video be prepped up a bit by trying the speakers on something else? How do they compare to other similar sized speakers? They appeared to sound superior to the built in ones, even if they didn't go as loud before distorting. You're looking and sounding better too, hope you're feeling that way as well

T
Techmoan · April 1, 2025

It’s a good idea, I’ll have a think about it.

B
Bas van Schooten · April 1, 2025

What a lovely orange colour, i love it! And the guy sure is thorough in his refurbishing... I also bought a Beosystem 10 that came in today. I tried and exactly the same here. Above about 5, the bass drops away and it gradually starts destorting.. Weird.. Still, great build quality, sound, and everything also still worked fine, including the cassette. Thank you for the tip!

D
David Fitzpatrick · April 1, 2025

Good video!

D
Duncan · April 1, 2025

Have you tried running your Beosystem 10 from batteries ? I got mine cheap because the sound was distorted. I then found it was only distorted when running off the mains. It sounded better on batteries. Changing the capacitors in the PSU section made things much better. However, you definitely need a clear head to do that. It took about three attempts to get mine back together, the biggest problem being getting the switches on the PCB lined up with the controls. If you do decide to try, reassemble it upside down so gravity is holding the buttons away from the switches. p,s. If you wanted to extend the content another suggestion would be to try hooking the speakers up to something else. I'm sure you must have something suitable hidden away somewhere.

T
Techmoan · April 1, 2025

It was powered by batteries throughout this video (it makes it easier to move around to different angles)

J
Joy Buchanan · April 1, 2025

I think you made the right choice to feature this as a shorter video than usual. It's still just as entertaining, and I think some people might find the option of refurbished B&O speakers useful, too. I'm sick as a dog myself at the moment, and having a video from you on my feed really brightened up my day.

T
Techmoan · April 1, 2025

Get well soon.

L
LeRoy Dreyfuss · April 1, 2025

I think the video was pretty good, and it showcased a revitalized set of speakers. I thought that was partly- if not mostly- why this channel exists... Also, you look to some color returning.

M
Mark Hesse · April 1, 2025

Don't know how quick and easy it was to make this video, but I think it turned out pretty well. It has all the elements you need: a little backstory, a demonstration and a little repair segment. In short, a beginning, a middle and an end. Plus it's a cool speaker system. (One suggestion however, in future, please refer to the color of the body of the speakers as 'Mat Black').🙂

T
Techmoan · April 1, 2025

There was a lot of talking to camera that I had to edit down and conceal with strategically placed cutaways. It was too slow.

C
CrimsonPig808 · April 1, 2025

Thanks for the video. I always liked the CX50 speakers. My dad was a B&O fan. I recall those speakers had a great sound. A question, what app was the audio db. monitor on your phone? It looked better than the iPhone app I downloaded. Good to see you putting out your videos.

T
Techmoan · April 1, 2025

It’s Decibel X - but I wouldn’t recommend it. Since the last time I used it it’s gone pop up crazy - encouraging a paid upgrade.

K
Kurt Hansen · April 1, 2025

Nice to watch you put together an audio cable. In the 80s, these speakers and the design stands they were stood on from B&o were just beautiful things for me to look at through the window of the Hi-Fi store. But I’ll leave them, even though they would financially be within reach now. They would look nice om my rack, though. Thanks for the video.

G
Gadgetman · April 1, 2025

It's important to have good speakers on YouTube, in a product sense and a creator sense! This video ticks both boxes!

D
Dave Curran · April 1, 2025

The speakers are a win, great colour. Not sure about the system itself, could be aging capacitors in the power supply?

D
Duncan · April 1, 2025

That was the problem with the one I got. Far less distortion on batteries.

C
Chris Munch · April 1, 2025

You're looking and sounding better in every update!

T
Techmoan · April 1, 2025

Thanks, now I just need to get my decision making abilities out of park.
