Act 43
Mel
âI donât fucking care what your name is, you sorry excuse for a worm; did you just bring a poor, possessed boy into my office!? I told that stupid cat that I wonât stand demons who do that--â
Mel wasnât entirely sure, but it seemed as though Lusje shrank a little.
âNo, no, I didnât possess himâ I mean, I did, for a minute, but thatâs not our usual arrangementâ
âI made a deal with Lusje,â Mel chimed in, hoping to clear things up.
The woman stared at Mel as if he just told her that he had sold half of his organs.
âExcuse me, you did what?â she asked.
âI-I mean⌠wait, Iâm confused. Bastet said that you know about demons and what they do--â, he began.
âExactly, I do,â she answered, âwhich is why I would never do such a stupid, dumb thing. Why are you even here, if youâve already made a deal?!â
ââCause he refuses to do most of the dirty work that comes with the power, so we have to go the classic route: climbing up the ladder one spoke after another, which includes having an agent,â Lusje explained.
The woman massaged her temples.
âWhy do I always pull the clowns,â she asked rhetorically.
Bastet really hadnât lied when she mentioned that Morris was rough around the edges.
Bastet⌠He already missed her. Their first meeting was so much⌠quieter than this one.
âIâm not sure how we shall proceed, Mrs. Morris. Is there a chance that youâll take us, or shall we leave?â he asked, trying to maintain a friendly, polite tone.
âThat depends on how much youâre worth â or rather, your potential. I mean, you have a demon. So you most likely will be a golden boy. But letâs see.â
She drew close to him, grabbed his chin without asking, and turned it to the left and then the right, observing him like a stock animal she wanted to buy.
âHow about you check the teeth, too? Itâs how you see the true health condition of a slave,â Lusje commented.
Ignoring the demon coldly, Morris spoke, âState your name, age, and occupation.â
âMelchior Sharma, 21, Magician.â
âStupid name. Tough profession, doesn't yield much. Canât you do anything else?â
Ouch.
âI only want to be a magician, nothing else, Maâam. May I show youââ
âNo need. You have a demon, I know your work has potential. Alright, well, I guess you could make it with a lot of work, but not with that name. Do you have an alias?â
âNo.â
âWeâll figure something out. What about your mole, can we have that removed?â
Mel put his fingers protectively over the little mole above his lips. It had never occurred to him that it might be an issue.
âIs it⌠bad?â he asked.
âStop confusing my kid. It looks handsome on him.â
âShut your mouth, tamed demon, not your turn. Iâll talk to you later.â
Now Mel was certain that Lusje was getting smaller. âIâm not tamed⌠just a little domesticated,â he heard the snake mumble, and almost had to laugh.
Instead, he bravely spoke up. âExcuse me, thereâs a question that has been occupying my mind since you mentioned something. If you havenât made a deal with a demon, nor are one yourself-- what are your relations to them?â
âI was liaised with one. Thatâs the only info you get on that. Let me make one thing clear: if I take you as a client, we wonât get personal. Youâre after glory, Iâm after money. Iâm the best you can get, and I will get you connections, gigs, opportunities, and fame. Thatâs all. I donât want to hear your tragic backstory or your dreams, I donât want to go drinking with you, I donât ever wanna hear you cry about the dark sides of showbiz or demon pacts, nor do I wanna hold your hand when youâre about to birth whatever the demon gave you for your powers. I only want to do my job and get paid. Understood?â
Tough words. But fair. Mel nodded in affirmation.
âGood. I will make sure to get you everything you need to become a star. And as I said â Iâm the best. You can rely on that. As long as youâre bringing in cash, I will protect you and guide you through the hellhole of entertainment and demon business.
Letâs begin by coming up with a 1-year plan, some trademarks, and your new name.â

Author's comment: And with that, we're done with Book II! Next chapter will be back in the present again, but I will take a short break with posting until then. I hope you enjoyed the second book, I know it's way more dark and confrontational, and Mel is still just such a baby, but maybe you found it interesting! Book III will start off way more fluffy again and there will be a bit more plot.
At this point a BIG SHOUT OUT to my beta reader Try, who does such an amazing job polishing my English and suggesting words I'm lacking. It's insanely helpful. Thank you so much, love!!!
If you have any thoughts to share, ideas, feedback, whatever - Who is your favorite character? Who would you like to see more sketches of? What would you wish would happen, do you look for more specific content? I'm super grateful for any feedback! Melodie & co mean a lot to both Schpog and me, and it's so very nice for us to see when it reaches other people, too!! Gives us life, to be honest đ

I love it! This was a really cool look into Melâs past and I really like the way youâve written the mechanics of forming demonic pacts. I enjoy darker stories so the tone of this arc was great to read. The pseudo-pregnancy aspect of maintaining or developing demonic powers is also deeply interesting and Iâve not seen anything like it explored in other works. I really relate to Melâs gender struggles in this book and appreciate how supportive Lusje is. Lusje is also just a very fun character and I love their dynamic with Mel. Bastet is an absolutely enchanting character, I would also be instantly devoted. Iâm really looking forward to reading more, and I wanted to be sure to leave a comment at the conclusion to this book to say how much Iâve enjoyed reading it and looking at all the lovely art. Cheers!
Rose: Oh my god, thank you so much for sharing all these thoughts and feelings! I'm so happy you enjoy the story and the characters like this!
just like mel, I'm absolutely smitten with bastet, her presence was short but omg even mel is still thinking about her after a couple chapters 𫣠she's just so mysterious and flirtyyyy lol, best cat lady â¤ď¸ lusje continues to be the sassiest danger noodle ever, he is so acerbic but his dialogue is so funny, and yet he still manages to be so respectful and decent!
