Act 32
Mel
Mel went on with his training over the next few days, but the initial motivation and euphoria was overshadowed by now. Not exactly by fear or other emotions, but by the lack of them. He didnât allow himself to think about it, he smothered every emotion, he didnât even talk much. Mel just focused on training. Opening portals, closing them, opening, closing, opening, closing. Vary them in sizes. Hold them for longer. Being more precise with the localisation. He did get better at it; But not as quickly as at the beginning. It was frustrating, but he just focused on the repeating actions.
He also was careful to eat only what he absolutely needed to, which did slow down the growth of diameter, but also left him with crippling hunger. So much so in fact that he started to feel like he was eaten up from the inside.
Thankfully, the demon didnât force him into any conversation either. On the contrary: It was so silent that Mel sometimes thought it was gone, only the tingling sensation in his arm reminding of its presence.
Until, one day, it did talk again.
Itâs time, it said.
Hearing that dark voice again that sounded like curled up smoke in a cave made Mel almost jump out of his skin.
Before any potential questions arose, the snake left his body, built up to a decent size and explained its comment further.
âI wish I wouldnât have to do this, but your body has already started to be consumed by the demons inside you, and Iâm afraid that if we wait any longer you might not make it. You need ambrosia now.â
âWhatâs ambrosia,â Mel answered with a question, and he was shocked about the distant, cold tone of his own voice. âI presume itâs not the stuff from Greek mythology.â
âI told you that to make up for the lack of human vigor - you so desperately donât want to take, like a fuckinâ little baby - I need to turn you into a demon, so that the parasites donât confuse the host with food. I do that with ambrosia. Youâve probably noticed that theyâve been doing that for a while now, though knowinâ you know, you mightâve been to dumb to fully get that. I healed you the whole time, but now they are getting furious.â
Though he wasnât feeling well before the demon's explanation, Mel now felt incredibly sick, thinking about parasites having actually been eating their way through him for the last few days.
âIâm sorry, kid. I tried to keep that away from ya as long as possible.â
âWhat ⌠will happen to me when I take it?â
The snake went silent again.
âI hate when you do that,â Mel declared, nervously.
After some seconds of silence the demon finally answered: âIt will turn your blood into Ichor. Itâs what we demons are made from. Itâs neither blood nor any other fluid, and it will not only run through your veins but also your mind.â
âIchor ⌠thatâs a Greek myth, too, right?â
The snake nodded, reflected upon something and then added: âNot all of these myths are made up. Us demons have been around for a very long time, and some of us had names like Aphrodite, Mars, Osiris, Loki, Shiva, Amaterasu, Quetzalcoatl.â
Mel stared at the snake in disbelief.
âYou mean⌠not only were these gods real, but actual demons?â While he was talking, his voice and body language got more expressive again.
Lusje gave him a crooked smile. âGlad to see you heatinâ up. But, yeah. I told you we are deities. Sometimes stronger, sometimes weaker, sometimes well known, sometimes undercover.â
âBut⌠werenât most gods good? And arenât demons fallen angels and the sum of everything negative in humans?â
The snake scuffed. âLook at you, talking like you actually know things. Good and bad are definitions of the bourgeoisie.â
âDid you know any of those you mentioned?â
âKnow? I was some of those.â
With shining eyes, Mel came closer. The snake wimped out a little. âWoah, itâs a bit eerie how excited ya are all of the sudden after being a zombie for days, kid, but ok. Better than being apathetic. Look, I donât like dwelling in the past, but Iâll tell you maybe one or two things when youâre a good little human and take your ambrosia.â
Mel gave the demon a motivated nod.
âWow, ok. That was easy,â Lusje said. Then the snake rolled the end of its tail around Mel, lifted him up and put him on the bed. âOkay. Iâll give you the stuff now. Just ⌠just remember, it will be over in some hours. You will survive this. Youâre a tough cookie, actually, so I have no doubt about that. And I will be with you for the whole time.â
Before Mel could answer anything, with the end of its tail, seemingly out of nowhere, the demon had grabbed a bottle with a black liquid-like content and held it against Melâs lips, forcing him to drink.
