Act 13
Rosemary
After their meal - in which, as usual, Melodie naturally ate more than Mary could comprehend - Mary suggested that they take a little walk. The magician agreed, and soon after they were walking down a path in between the river and the loosely assembled forest.
It was a little chilly, but Melodie, whose arm she tucked into, was close and warm.
They didnât talk for a while; Not because they had nothing to talk about, but rather that they really didnât have to. It was a full action on its own, not the absence of one. Mary silently enjoyed Melodieâs presence, and, judging by the smile on the magicianâs face, figured that she must feel the same way.
Mary loved taking long walks all alone. It was one of her favorite hobbies. But talking walks with Melodie? That was even better.
It eventually was Mary, who then broke the pleasant silence, when they were walking by a stray birch that looked like it had escaped the company of the other trees in the forest.
âMelodie?â she said, stopping in place.
Her companion stopped, too.
âI understand that you donât like to talk about ⌠your ⌠your physical condition.â
Melodie kept silent for some heartbeats, then answered: âThat is correct.â
Taking a deep breath, Mary walked around Melodie, so that she stood right in front of her. She had to tilt her head back a little to look up to that tall woman.
âAnd you also donât want to tell me why, rightâŚ?â
âYes.â
Mary looked into Melodieâs deep brown eyes, searching for answers. Or at least a hint of how she should handle the situation, because her body was occupying her mind and overwhelming her with feelings. Mostly worry and excitement, two very contradicting emotions that made Mary feel more and more angry at herself. She was constantly on the edge and just wanted to be finally relieved of that stress. But she also didnât want to push Melodie.
The tall woman reciprocated the eye contact, and it almost seemed like she was looking for answers herself.
Only when Mary averted her eyes she spoke.
âWould you like to touch it?â
Mary froze.
âY ⌠your -â
âYes.â
She looked up to Melodie, trying to figure out what was going on within her. Was she teasing her? Testing her? Being just polite, sort of? Or maybe she was planning to scold her, to give her a lecture in basic decency, to not be a creep.
If that was the case, then, she would deserve it.
So Mary nodded.
Melodie continued to gaze at her, doing nothing at first.
Then, her body shifted, and just when Mary started to get unbearably tense, Melodie gently took her hand and placed it on her stomach.
Maryâs body immediately tensed up even more, sensations rippling through her limbs like little electroshocks. Melodie's belly was even bigger than her clothes made it seem, and so much firmer than Mary remembered from those two moments she had touched it accidentally, one during their first meeting, the other during their first kiss.
Melodie observed Mary, her facial expression unreadable.
Mary didnât move. Her hand braced to be pulled back any second by Melodieâs own hand.
When Mary felt her hand lifting up, she tried to withdraw her own, but Melodie gently held her hand in place.
âDonât you want to?â she asked carefully, her face still uncommunicative.
âI⌠I do ⌠I âŚ. I-Iâm justâ
âDonât be afraid. I want you to.â
When Melodie released her a second time, Mary didnât pull back.
âI want you to do what you want to do. Please, show me what youâre longing for. I want to understand you.â
Mary could barely hear her. Blood was rushing in her ears, her own breathing resonated loudly in her head. Trembling, she slowly drove her hand over the impressive curve of Melodieâs lower belly.
That wasnât fat. And it wasnât a prosthetic. Or was it? Melodie was an illusionist, after all.
Mary stroked a bit more, to find an edge of a possible prosthetic. But there was nothing. At least nothing at places she could touch without being inappropriate.
By then she was hyperventilating a little, almost feeling like she was close to passing out.
âItâs peculiar, Rozemarijn. I have met some people who were interested in this regard, but never as dedicated as youâve been about it. Why is that?â
When Mary answered it was merely more than a weak whisper: âI donât know.â
Without even realizing it, Mary had lifted her other hand, using it to scan the abdomen even more. She felt herself getting lost in the sensation, and it made her touches more and more bold - but this time she didnât care. She was completely taken in.
She felt the firmness of the taunted belly, the softness of the skin at the transition from abdomen to hip. She felt a tiny bump under the fabric, around the location where Melodieâs navel should be. Mindabsent, she even lifted her belly a little. It felt heavy and like there was something under her skin. Or ⌠was there even some movement?
Only when Melodie spoke again she noticed that she was slightly panting.
âYouâre the first person ever to do that.â
Mary blinked at her, like she just woke up from a dream and had trouble coming back.
âTouching it, I mean.â
Mary stared at her with big eyes. Melodie cleared her throat and suddenly seemed pretty interested in the scenery.
âI ⌠usually dislike it,â she added.â But itâs okay with you.â Iit seemed to Mary like she was trying to sound casual.
It took her more willpower than sheâd like to admit to let go of Melodieâs curve and instead grab onto her hands.
âIâm very touched,â Mary said, looking up to her again. âThank you.â
âWhat a coincidence. Iâve just been very touched myself,â Melodie answered with a crooked smile.
It took a moment till Mary understood, but then she blushed furiously.
âS-stop it! Donât say things like that!â
Melodie laughed cheerfully. âIâm sorry, little dove. I wasnât trying to shame you. It was, in fact, pretty mesmerizing to watch and feel you analyzing me like that. Like youâve been in trance, or another person altogether.â
âI-Iâm sorry⌠I donât know what got into me.â
âItâs okay. Donât worry. Are⌠curves of this kind your thingâŚ? A preference?â
Mary shook her head. âNo. Not⌠not usually, at least. Iâm not into pregnant women, or something, if you mean it like that. Or ⌠or women at all. Or men. But itâs different with you. I canât explain it, really. Itâs ⌠itâs a new side of me.â
In a flowing movement, Melodie raised her hand and touched Maryâs cheek, softly stroking it with her thumb. It felt like the most loving gesture Mary ever encountered. She nestled her face against it, ever so slightly.
âLetâs explore that side together, shall we?â
Maryâs heart made a jump.
âWhat do you mean by thatâŚ? Does that mean⌠like ⌠do you want us to meet regularlyâŚ?â
âYes, that. You can call it dating, if you want.â
It probably mustâve looked like Mary was calmly considering the magicianâs words, but internally, she was screaming.
âMelodie ⌠I.. I donât know what to say. Iâm not good with these things, Iâm afraid. Iâve never dated anyone before.â
âNeither have I, dear.â
Mary stared at her in disbelief. This just couldnât be true.
âAnyway,â Melodie added, coughing slightly, âOf course we donât have to, if you donât feel comfortable with it. My apologies, if I interpreted things wrong. Though Iâd really love to still see you as a friend, then.â
âN-no!â Mary quickly intervened, âNo, you ⌠I think you interpreted them right. I just⌠I canât believe that youâd be interested in me to that extent. It feels ⌠unreal. That someone I like likes me back.â
âI feel the same way, Rozemarijn. We can take things very slow, if you want.
But if you agree to let me into your heart, I need you to know what youâre engaging with. There will be days when Iâll be sick. And days when Iâll be strange. And there will be some things I wonât⌠canât tell you. And we wonât be able to see each other often, I presume, much to my regret. Do you understand the consequences of this -â
Before Melodie could end her sentence, Mary grabbed her jacket somewhere in the middle, pulled her down a little, got on her tiptoes again and kissed her.
This time, it was her who kissed a little more possessively.
When she unlocked their lips and looked into Melodieâs surprised face, she simply said: âI do understand.â
