Infernal Enforcer
Weapon (pistol), legendary (requires attunement)
This pistol has a mote of hellfire at the center of its 6-shot cylinder; it magically melts any nonmagical firearm bullet that's loaded in it, destroying the bullet. You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon, and it deals an extra 1d6 fire damage to any target it hits.
The pistol has 6 charges for the following properties. It regains 1 expended charge at the start of each of your turns and when you roll a 6 on any fire damage die you roll using the weapon. You can also use an action while holding the pistol to cause it to regain all of its expended charges; you do so by flipping out and spinning the weapon's cylinder, which emits a magma-like glow from within.
The weapon doesn't use ammunition and therefore lacks the loading property. Instead, each time you make a ranged attack with it, the weapon must expend 1 of its charges to magically create and fire a bullet made of brimstone.
Bedeviling Curse. When you hit a creature with a ranged attack using the pistol, you can expend 1 additional charge as part of the attack to force that creature to make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature is cursed by a plume of devilish smoke that magically weakens it. While cursed in this way, the creature takes a cumulative −1 penalty to any attack roll it makes (to a maximum penalty of −3), and it has disadvantage on any saving throw it makes against this weapon's named properties. This curse lasts for 1 minute, until you're incapacitated, or until you curse another creature with it.
Fan the Hammer and Flames. Once per turn when you take the Attack action with the pistol, you can forgo one of your attacks with it to expend 3 of the pistol's charges and release a 15-foot cone of damning flames from the holes in the barrel and cylinder. Each creature within the cone must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 1d10 piercing damage and 4d6 fire damage.
The sheriff strode with wretched overconfidence into the center of the square, waddling forward in his oversized armor. A stranger rested against a signpost—his signpost— and he needed to exert his authority wherever he could. To maintain order, of course.
With that same overconfidence, the sheriff spoke. “All right fella, you ain’t from around these parts. Seems like yer disrupting the peace. Time to move it along.”
The stranger stood upright, slowly. His eyes remained hidden by his wide-brimmed hat, but the rattling of his boots sent a shiver down his spine like a viper. With an icy voice, he replied. “You broke your contract, sheriff. I’m here to collect your soul, as agreed.”
Worse than a viper.
The sheriff tried, and failed, to hide his recognition. With the last of his ill-gained bravado, he reached for his blade and scoffed, “Contract? Over my dead—”
A blast and plume of smoke erupted from the stranger's side, and the sheriff laid dead on the ground. His body was already turning to ash with the smell of fire and brimstone. And, with a wry smile and clatter of spurs, the stranger stepped over the smoldering remains and made for the horizon.
