quantifica september
hey team! let's get September's update off before it gets any deeper into October.
PROGRESS REPORT
I am... between things at the moment. went to visit friends and family in California for the second half of September, and did not manage to get the Patreon relaunch video complete. at the point where the "mid-year" relaunch is coming out in October, it really prompts the question "why are you shooting to get this out in 2026?" cuz, if the plan is to use the yearly quantifica update as a public fundraiser, and the only reason we're doing this mid-year is cuz we started in June... when we're closer to January than we are to June, maybe it's best to just wait til we announce next year's projects, instead of announcing this year's three months before they end.
also, being honest: a quantifica video was not SpArKiNg JoY just now. so! I have turned my attention to several elsewheres, but which elsewhere is gonna be the thing remains to be seen. I have a couple frontrunners, but, right now, I'm trying to close the loop on a number of things that have been unclosed a while: getting my prog notes off to you, finally releasing the video of that talk I gave a whole-ass year ago, and making headway on some of this year's quantifica projects. I will have goodies for you very soon, in all cases, and should have Next Big Video updates by next month's update. or I won't! life is full of mystery.
VIDEO CABINET: 4/9
no updates.
MUSIC CABINET: 1/9
progress has been made on four tiles, but none are complete. but you will have a rundown of my progsploration (and a playlist) very soon. I'm also definitely not going to write an essay for every genre, good lord, this was not an optimal use of my time... (but it was fun, suboptimal fun is always the best.)
here is this month's minimix:
Moron Police - Pachinko, Parts 1 & 2
- I hope you enjoy this hook-filled anthem about being turned into a pachinko machine as much as I do, cuz here's sixteen minutes of it
I Broke My Robot - The Further Away
- a lot of drill & bass sounds far more indebted to select Venetian Snares, Aphex Twin, and Squarepusher albums than any of those artists feel indebted to their own histories, but... damn, sometimes I just want more of exactly that sound
Adult Jazz - Springful
- when you put an album on not remembering where you found it and immediately go "oh okay"
The Cat Empire - The Wine Song
- how do all the instruments speed up at the exact same rate of acceleration?
HMLTD - Lay Me Down
- spoilers for the ending of a concept album about fighting giant medieval worm and/or inner demons (who may also be worms)
FILM CABINET: 6/9
got to watch The Boy and the Heron with my bestie (we were both ambivalent about the budgies). you might also enjoy my reviews of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma and Resident Evil.
BOOK CABINET: 0/9
finished A Canticle for Leibowitz, which was about as good as a book you wish you hadn't spent four months reading can be, and am finally working on something from the book cabinet! I am several chapters into the fourth Easy Rawlins mystery by Walter Mosley, and it is compulsively readable. I don't thing we will have a hard time getting through this one.
GAME CABINET: 3/9
need to decide if I am abandoning Unsighted or not. it's good, but I have lost momentum. I think "not wanting to go back" is actually the game working as intended, because I know a lot of NPCs are about to die because I though meteor dust was gonna be more plentiful than it ended up being and did not allocate it properly.
while I debate this, you can peruse my review of a different metroidvania, Blade Chimera.
a'ight, talk soon.

"a quantifica video was not SpArKiNg JoY just now" -- I'd be worried about you if it ever did. 😉
Pachinco is a great album. I actually need to spend more time with The Worm.
I love me some Metroidvanias, and Unsighted hit me the same way. I always meant to get back to it…
