Plato’s Goon Cave feat. Paris Marx

This week, Riley, Milo, and Alice join special guest (and beloved friend of the show) Paris Marx of the Tech Won’t Save Us podcast for a discussion about Apple Vision Pro. Yes, the ridiculous snowboarding goggles that let you see pop up ads everywhere, the next iteration of Google Glass (but worse, and weirder). Our message to you is: bully anyone wearing these things.

What name was beeped out from Milo’s bus rant near the start?

Not a name, but a description I think.

Why does Charles sound so much like Tim Westwood? It's creating some very strange mental images.

all of you americans typing "sex asses" instead of "sex arses", you should all be ashamed.

I love to pay money to give Apple Inc a constant data feed on what exactly my eyeballs are pointing at and focusing on. I can imagine no problems with this.

The "everyone will be wearing them, so just digitally replace the goggles with your avatar" bit just brings up, again, how all these schemes are just VR Chat but more lame and expensive. When the business model is "hope that our weirdly fanatical userbase will buy anything we tell them to, no matter how expensive, lacking in features, or publicly embarrassing," I just feel like it's not going to compete well with any existing gaming headset and a Lovense.

Never have I been so pleased to have a decades-long refusal to Know Anything about Apple, and so, all of my olds use Android, because that's what I'll explain to, and fix for, them.

I see a Zum (?) bus on my way home from work every day. It takes the same route the old bus. But they’ve had a much harder time getting around in the snow. They also got rid of all of the busses from the old fleet, and considering they’re doing this in a large city, that’s a ton of waste.

I wanted to make some observations about electric school buses with the pointed effort of making criticism of nuvve a little better (don't get me wrong the nuvve premise sucks but not because eletric buses are a totally terrible idea). first school buses are kind of exactly the sort of high duty cycle low milage application for which batteries are a way better application then diesels . they spend hug amount of time at idle, accelerating and decelerating, routes are short except in some rural cases you don't want your kid on a bus for an hour twice a day so the overwhelming majority of routes are going to be under an hour. second because the range requirements are more limited both the material input to the battery and it's size are circumscribed. the lionc-d school buses have 126 – 168 – 210 kWh battery packs. this compares favorably with the hummer ev (212KWh) or a rivian truck (140KWh). unsurprisingly a bus is far more efficient per person carried the the equivalent personal vehicle and the since range required is far lower you get a lower capacity higher duty cycle battery then a car without the range requirements of an on highway truck like the tesla semi. v2g applications seem like the least interesting part of an electric school bus. using the lionc/d for example those are normally level2 charged which takes advantage of the busy sitting idle at least 20 hours a day for off peak charging. DC fast charging is at 25 or 50KW. that puts the grid intertie capacity at something like 50kw * N buses 20 buses provides a megawatt instantiously but only for about 2 hours at most this is not a lot, esp when you compare to tesla megapack equivalent capacity of 20 buses which would be several MW. but I think more to the point, when your busses back at the barn from their afternoon route mostly depleted is also the peak consumption time during the day, so at the point where v2g activity might be most useful is also at their most heavily depleted point in the day. if they have extra capacity fine but in fact you will size batteries and buses to routes so having extra battery capacity is an un-necessary and complicating expense. being able to arbitrage off peak eletricty rates, eg. simply not charging when commercial rates are on peak is fine and dandy, without needing to mythologize passive income potential looking at this proejct what you see is the best photo the can come up with is a bus L2 charging at like 30 amp 220v rates. https://nuvve.com/projects/cajon-valley-v2g-project/ >– Six 60kW bidirectional DC fast chargers in the CVUSD bus yard and several Level 2 wall chargers were installed for resiliency purposes cannot sell power at $2 a kwh in the middle of a hot summner day if you are going to have to pick up kids in 2 hours. 168KWh* 6 = 1MWh = $2k at that rate. this isn't a power plant. if you want to generate that power and put it into the grid, use solar panels to shade your parking lot. finally the reason all these tech bros have electric school buses in their sights is the combination of federal $$$$ associated with school bus emissions reduction which is something the industry as a whole has fought for years, but now it's in the form of incentives so folks are all for it. https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/biden-harris-administration-announces-nearly-1b-awards-clean-school-buses-across As well, the actual scale of the addressable market. which is typically in the form of local contracted and legally supportable monoply. https://www.schoolbusfleet.com/custom-content/10050084/top-40-contractor-fleets-of-2018 this is far more attractive then groveling to consumers to get uptake on your product.

etienne · February 11, 2024

yeah I generally agree that school buses is one of the rare sweet spot for rubber tire battery electric vehicules but are you really sure that using them as fixed energy storage is a good idea? It's like if you're trying to sell me a fridge and also want me to be part of the futures market that stabilizes the international pork belly trade

e
etienne · February 11, 2024

oh yeah right. The one thing is that they neglected Gorilla Arm Syndrome. Early experiments in touchscreen controls found that if you make people operate controls with their arms stretched in front of them and no support like physical gears and levers offer, the weight of their arm cause fatigue and is basically unworkable the Minority Report dragging GUIs in the virtual air looks cool but simply does not function I think in this situation a keyer that can be held in one hand at rest would work best but no one seems to have ever got that right either

The vision pro does have a market, but it’s being oversold. I think regular people will maybe be okay for it being a round-the-house thing potentially like Alexa and it has potential in engineering, medicine, and aviation training where VR already has utility.

One of the things missed in the section about tech layoffs is those numbers never include the gargantuan amount of contractors and agency workers who are churned through by these companies. I used to contract for Microsoft and they would do an 18/6 contract where you could only work for them for a maximum of 18 months before the would cancel your contract and you would be denied for working for them for another 6 months before needing to apply for a job with them again (usually a new role because they’ll have gotten someone else in starting their 18 months) Also, I say 18 months, you would actually be offered 6-12 initially and be told at the last possible moment if that time is extended to 18 months. I actually saw some contracts offered for 3 months. Generally the process would be 6 months learning the job, 6 months actually doing the job then 6 months trying to find another before your salary disappears. All of this is just to avoid in work benefits (I never got sick pay for example) and then being able to “fire” someone by just not renewing a contract and thus avoiding any legal shite. Contractors are massively more prevalent in the industry these days and even more disposable than they’ve ever been. You used to be able to go from contractor to full time direct employee, that avenue is gone

As the proud parent of a 4yo and 18mo who I love more than anything in this world, I strongly disagree with the notion that it is possible (or even desirable) to cherish every single second with your children. I’ve spent every night for several years now laying down with at least one child and waiting (sometimes hours) for them to finally fall asleep. There is only so much time you can spend being kicked/pushed/rolled against while laying motionless in the dark before you go mad. I’ve often listened to podcasts or read ebooks while playing those waiting games with not-quite-asleep children. Granted, I wouldn’t do that while wearing a massive headset, but those parents need something to keep them sane.

I am surprised they didn't mention Microsofts HoloLens/Augmented Reality which is probably the most successful of all of these. And with "success" I mean some very niche application in science and industrial sector. (And military obviously - the army buys everything). Nobody wanted that thing for home usage either.
