No Healthcare, Only Wellness feat. Tamara K. Nopper and Eve Zelickson

For this week’s bonus, we spoke with Tamara K. Nopper and Eve Zelickson from the Data and Society Research Institute. They’re the authors of “Wellness Capitalism: Employee Health, the Benefits Maze, and Worker Control.” Would it come as a surprise to you to learn that employee data and tech-driven ‘wellness solutions’ are increasingly offered as employee benefits in the US, in the sense that you can’t actually get psychotherapy on your insurance, but a chatbot can offer you cognitive behavioral therapy? Not a surprise at all? Well, we have just the conversation for you.

Check out the primer here! https://datasociety.net/library/wellness-capitalism-employee-health-the-benefits-maze-and-worker-control/

I think it was the movie Cat's Eye where the guy's employer had a smoking cessation program that basically involved holding his family hostage. I never thought we would get close to that actually being a reality, but here we are.

Yooooo I know this arrogant dick who works at Deloit cannot wait for his life to implode when he tells the chatbot his embarrassing social interactions in a humblebrag sort of way (I know you aren't reading this but if you are then shut up about mount everest we have to listen to your spiel about pioneering or "being good at learning" on every night out)

Oh shut, my employer allows us to be very expressive and open at work but is very anti union! Weird. It happens to share a parking lot with a whole foods, too.

I work for Becton Dickinson a medical device/tech company. We have a program that is exactly this “BD healthy lives” offers credits towards your healthcare costs for logging data about your health/weight loss also for attending the facility gym. Also a breathing exercise app. It’s HELL. (Recently due to layoffs there were suicide(s) and so they hung fliers for the breathing app)

“Due to layoffs there were suicides so they hung fliers for the breathing app” is a sentence that makes me want to go postal

That Safeway CEO who promotes EWPs and got the amendment in the HCA is a huge Republican wanker.

It's already a thing (explored in the work of e.g. Ian Hacking) that the DSM is partially written with the needs of medical insurers in mind.

Sorry, REI, "Sesh" isn't gonna fix my mental health problems. Simply give me more money.

"The War on Depression" is too fucking real. I literally see it on the horizon.

And Maintenance Phase's episode on Workplace Wellness programs is a great follow-up to this episode.

This was great! My mom is an HR manager of a medium sized company and in charge of making decisions about some programs like these. She often asks my opinion about work things and I’ve used some of the things you talk about in my discussions with her.

Good to see you covering this, it's been a personal pet peeve for a few years. Institutions and corporations claiming to care about your health before foisting a meditation app on you

I work in a field where someone crying at their desk is considered a job well done by management. That's absolutely terrible and I advise anyone considering the industry to stay away, but it also means I don't have to put up with any of this false wellness nonsense.

This field is?

The AA parallel is a really interesting one. Large employers are "AA-ifying" DEI, trauma and wellness programs, and such. Some go so far to include this fluff stuff in their vision or mission statements and it reeks of culty behavior, rather than corporate culture, which is much honest about not giving a shit about workers. Capital is trying to out run that revolution hard with this wellness push. But healing doesn't happen at work so get rid of those healing rooms, workers are people, not puppies that piddle on the carpet.

I worked with a guy who had his fitbit hanging by thread from the arm of an old hard drive being actuated by a ladder logic controller. worked like a charm. 2014 or so in the midwest they rolled this out.

My coworker taped his "activity tracker" to his clothes dryer to fake the steps without giving away his real location. All to get the 15% insurance premium discount.
