Britainology 40: Love Island

Now unlocked to the $5 tier!

For this month's premium Britainology, we discuss the show Love Island. Neither of us are Love Island watchers so we're coming into this as neophytes, and we ask: what does it say about Britain? Is there something to be learned from watching it? Is there something to be learned from watching people who insist that there's a deeper meaning to it? All this and more

i would say that the one of the things worth discussing in the actual content of the show is how the actual mechanisms of the program aggressively reinforce cis-heteronormativity and how that resonates within the audience.

Everyone on all of these shows - Love Island, Made in Chelsea, etc - sound like they're in a job interview the whole time. which i guess they kind of are. but it's still very unsettling to watch people talk about someone they ostensibly want to fuck as if they're applying for a role as junior marketing assistant

My partner's relative gave both of us COVID right before we went on holiday and we passed the hotel quarantine time enraptured by Love Island every night. After recovering we both tried watching it and found it unbearably boring. I guess this is a real world example of Nate's swimming pool What If?.

Gotta agree with my fellow Nate, America is deeply distrustful of people who have expertise or knowledge

I once got addicted to Made in Chelsea in which people can do literally anything - they can go on holiday, go to work, do whatever strange things rich people do - but they still have exactly the same conversations although with zero emotional affect. That's truly cursed although you do get to laugh at the wealthy.

Every episode where Nate casually slips a little more into using British slang makes me worry for his immortal soul

Nothing ever really prepares me for hearing hearing a posh accent in the US. I worked for a theatre company many years ago and I picked up the phone to find someone speaking in straight up RP. I thought it was a joke.

Graduated high school in 01 in the midwest can confirm calling things Jewish was widespread.

From the glimpses I have seen of the show, I have honestly have never thought that any of them are hot. I guess they're not my type, but still, they're just the most generic Ken Doll people looking people I have ever seen. At least with big brother, there was more than one archetype of personalities. You had different body shapes and ages groups and everything. Like where are the nerds or the goth kids in Love Island? It's so powerfully just peering a life size version of a Barbie play set. None of them have anything interesting to say.

I actually am one of those guys who listens to Trashfuture primarily for Britainology. I pretty much started listening to the regular podcast as a result of listening to Britainology

I am also that guy.

Milo thinks us Americans respect people who read books what he doesn't understand is that when he talks about reading his book he's doing it with an accent we associate with intelligence because we're fucking stupid

Looking through old cookbooks from the 70s & 80s is wild. The amount of shit that I've seen encased in gelatin is wild. Why would I want to eat a pot roast cast in gelatin.

make Nate watch the George Galloway cat episode of big brother
