School’s Out For Rapture ft. Josh Boerman

It's the free one!

Josh Boerman from The Worst of All Possible Worlds joins the entire gang to discuss the Christian Dominionist designs on American society through the lens of the "school choice" campaign led by, among others, West Michigan's very own Betsy DeVos. We look at parallels between similar movements here, and how they link to other demands made by the same people.

The Worst of All Possible Worlds (@TWOAPW) is a weekly podcast of case studies in the pop culture of a dying empire. Co-hosts Josh (@boshj) and Brian (@spocks_brian) grew up evangelical in Michigan and New Mexico, while A.J. (@thefuzzymask) grew up Catholic in California. Together, we deconstruct how narrative and artistic choices in popular media reflect or subvert the ongoing reactionary project in contemporary America and the world at large.

I live in West Michigan and some of these townships are outright HotFuzz lvl cult communities. They want all of the community aid to be doled out, or refused to, through the church. Every member is surveiled by nosey neighbors and local “pious” businesses. They make a show about how they’ll go any length to help community member except melenated folks or anyone who speaks another language natively and show contempt for the young if they don’t carry on the faith

we did an interesting interview with the outgoing editor-in-chief of the calvin university student newspaper that you might be interested in. no surprise that the school is a flashpoint for this type of insanity

I remember when school vouchers first became a thing in the mid 90’s around where I live and thinking (even as a kid) how isn’t this a violation of the separation of church and state? I suppose the rationale is if the government gives all faith based schools money it isn’t showing preferential treatment. But you can also argue government funds should never be given to any religious institution and instead be administered by secular nonprofits and the government, but that would be communism for ….reasons. Here in NYC you can tell what charter schools are terrible by looking up the education credentials of the principal. If the principal only has a masters in education, is in their early 30’s, and it’s in a working class/poor neighborhoods that school just sucks up tax dollars while providing a middling to poor education. Charter schools in mostly white neighborhoods still suck up tax dollars and place them in private hands, but will provide a better education. Also, let’s not even start about the “success academies” in poor neighborhoods that tout their college admissions numbers, but conveniently leave out the fact they can kick out pupils for like whatever reason they wish. And frequently do when kids fall behind rather than helping them. But this is the logical end point of the US education system post “No Child Left Behind”

The overlap of tech startups and charter schools perked my ears because Netflix dipshit Reed Hastings pours a lot of money into and considers himself an “educational philanthropist” 🤢

Quick note on 'left wing indoctrination schools': Montessori schools.

The same is happening with schooling system where I live. They started making private and half private schools to segregate people (think gipsies and Muslims) and then the right decided they didn't want the local populace speaking the local language... So they made a campaign for people to " choose" what to learn. As if they didn't learn both the common language and the local one. Even creating fake outrage. The fucking worst thing is that it worked. And privatizing education has been a constant on both left and right for decades now.

The charter school shit sucks so bad. They suck so fucking bad. The one that I went to, the person who owned the school and a few other charter schools got indicted for embezzling millions of dollars from the schools that she owned. As far as I'm aware she was never actually punished for it. Like not only is it a tool kill teachers unions, its just another way for people to drain public money into private investment shit. That building we were in was so fucking cold I had to wear sweatpants under my uniform because they wouldn't turn the fucking heat on

I just assumed that the Vatican NFT scheme was more flat out boring old money laundering considering the Vatican Bank scandals that keep coming up every few years...

OH! The podcast in Watchdogs Legion was hosted by Andy Zaltzman and Alice Frasier, of the Bugle, which Nish is a regular co-host on. Make sure to ask Nish if he has anyone buy the pilot for "Nude with Nish" next time you have him on.

So my read on this mostly comes from having read _The Family_ by Jeff Sharlet fifteen years ago, but l always got more of the sense that these fuckers are operating off Divine Right of Kings rather than any sort of Calvinism. To be way too glib, "Predestination" has too many syllables for the average Dominionist.

Thanks for the substantive podcast about events that appear like they will come to pass, gang. It was, cathartic I guess, to hear history and analysis right now instead of unfocused rage and despair. If kings and modes of production can fall, then surely the same future awaits some rich oafs whose idea of dominion is making the school buy their bad textbooks.

Nyc doesn’t have vouchers for yeshivas. The law requires private schools to provide “substantially equivalent” education, and it isn’t enforced. But the city isn’t paying for yeshiva *tuition*.

50:00 - One of the other "fun" things I've heard about charter schools doing is being very selective about who they accept/keep, to ensure that they only graduate students with very good grades and that anybody who got poor grades got dumped onto the public school system that they just defunded.
