Trans-Atlanticism feat. Abigail Thorn

It's the free one!

This week, friend of the show Abigail Thorn (@PhilosophyTube) joins us to discuss the EHRC’s turn towards belligerent transphobia. One might go so far as to say that they’ve violated Riley’s Law, but there’s an American dimension: British transphobia is beginning to appear in American legal statutes, cited approvingly. Seems bad! We also discuss an app to buy your way into government? And some admittedly out-of-date reactions to the Russian invasion of Ukraine (we recorded this on the day it started).

new yorker here - the wild thing about andrew yang is that he’s actually not nearly as rich as you’d think. he wants you to think he is but he made his bones when he sold his stake in manhattan prep, which was a very small exit. forbes estimated his net worth at $1m in 2019

This is the fault of NATO provocation since euromaidan, but everyone thought Putin would be more risk averse. Fucked around and found out, reaping, sowing, etc.

Very minor thing to pick out but the Crimean War is such a funny thing to reference jingoistically. One of the English commanders was so old and addled he thought they were fighting Napoleon again. Maybe the UK can call up some Falkland Islands era commanders, the unexploded ones

As a lapsed Catholic, I don’t want be the “ I blame Protestantism” person, but I blame Protestantism. Although, I do darkly enjoy the irony the of US being founded by English religious nutters and hundreds of years later the US exporting religious nutters back to help bring about the downfall of both countries.

Yang also flirted with the idea of pro wrestlers having a union.

One thing I found very interesting in the Trojan Horse podcast was how much that white woman who was the “whistleblower” from that one school kept talking about “protecting women and girls” - how much everything she said sounded like terf talking points, and how I feel pretty certain that she’s probably also a terf these days. Middle class white women in this country love to wield their “fear” or need for “protection” as a power over whoever is lower in the hierarchy than them.

Why is it every time a Web 3 thing comes up, it seems to sound like very like behaviour? E.g. "If you believe in the project enough and you invest enough into it, you get to be within the inner circle with the Founder".

British TERF talking points also have made it into German newspapers verbatim. Not that there wasn't transphobia before but reports on Kathleen Stock mostly consisted of either taking her tweet as the whole story or copy/pasting BBC coverage (besides the point of why a British professor quitting should make the news here). There has been a noticeable shift in what "arguments" transphobes use.

Trans (Intersex) Texan and loyal trashfuture listener here. We can absolutely see British terfery making its way to the states, mainly through the upper class socially conservative wasp circles (Andrew Sullivan, you're not sending your best folks). It has recently hit the mainstream culture war as an electoral issue though, thus the Texas AG directive. While it does not have the full force of law YET, it is terrifying when you stop to think of it, as if enacted, trans children would effectively be kidnapped by the state (as this would lead to the jailing of the parents and the removal of the child from the home), having the trans minor forcibly de-transitioned regardless of the effect it would have on their body, and then placed in the (largely evangelical/religious) volunteer foster care system. Its a backdoor evangelical plan to kidnap trans children through state violence. Literally just handsmaids tale but with slightly more steps. This has led to the creation of a sort of trans underground railroad to help trans families get out of the state if they want to. I've personally donated to one, and have friends that have done the same. We are doing the fascism yall. Which is all just insane given much of terf rhetoric has moved to the "extremism and violence" of the "trans activists." These people are literally building goon squads to go kidnap trans children and break apart families, and its the trans people that are extreme?
