As an Australian, Milo's comment that the Australian government is still capable of doing things briefly paralysed me from the neck down
from up here (canada/generalized anglosphere) it does seem like Australia was one of those countries that truly did have a handle on the virus ... up until that last variant. Is it not the case?

WRT "alert noise if someone leaves without washing their hands" - I once saw somebody in my building walk into the bathroom, phone in one hand, coffee in the other. He set them on top of the urinal while he did his business, then picked them up and walked straight out. I have stopped shaking hands in my building.

The other week I read an article about how Nancy Pelosi isn't going to retire after the 2022 U.S. elections because it would be bad optics and it suggested a septuagenarian closer to 80 than 60 and an actual octogenarian as her potential successors in the Democratic Party.
