Britainology 30: Homes Under the Hammer (feat. Alice Caldwell-Kelly)
Milo subjects Nate to yet another property-themed British TV show, except this one is about people buying derelict homes at auction and renovating them in order to (in most cases) rent them out at huge markup. We brought on Alice Caldwell-Kelly, who described this show as 'like a nature documentary about parasites,' and we have a delightful time.

You can get a bridging loan to buy at auction rather than pay cash.
Loved this one(whizzing)!
loving the house tv britainology. changing rooms disasters when?
Please PLEASE do a Britainology about gogglebox
if the podcast about british people started doing social commentary using the TV show about people watching TV shows I feel like we'd risk waking up Godzi-David Foster Wallace from the depths of the marianas trench
was thinking of skipping this one just because as an Australian the British landlord TV was a common thing to see when you were home sick like Milo said but I'm so glad I didn't, absolutely lost my shit like I haven't in quite some time because of the Tommy Walsh bit
I listened to this right after reading part of Capital Vol 1 that talked about the horrors of housing in early industrial Britain. My favorite part is that simultaneous to a boom in the population, the housing stock in many rural counties decreased. So more and more people were crowded into an ever shrinking, increasingly run down pool of houses which were ever more expensive to rent out.
If Alice ever became a cyborg cop like the lady from Deus Ex I just assume 'carpeted bathroom' would be her kill-phrase
Well now that we've gone down the Tommy Walsh hole we absolutely need an episode on Ground Force and to bring Alice back for that one too
The landlord gilet is also known as the ‘fachaleco’ in Spain
"you give me £10 for an Ikea bar stool and I'll sit here and wank like a fucking spider monkey" fucking killed me man 😂😂
Tommy Walsh going to nonce Valhalla, where he can spy on the children's cricket pitch and never be apprehended.
utterly destroyed by Alice's wheezing "rack off me fuckin' ute"
Please subject Nate to the bizarre BBC/CBC cooking show that is “Two Fat Ladies” It’s a bizarre and horny peep into the early days of “lifestyle” TV. I recommend “Barristers at Lincoln Inn” or “The Cambridge Eight”
If you ever do a Britainology on Warhammer 40K (please!), there's a book coming out in March, called Grimdark: A Very British Hell, by Tim Linward which might be a good jumping off point. The author's bio makes it sound like he'd be a good fit.
