The Road to Apedom feat. This Machine Kills

It's the free one!

Jathan and Ed from TMK return to help us figure out exactly what “Web 3” is, and what people actually mean when they say “Web 3.” What we find when we look under the hood is a virtual series of colonia dignidads all layered on top of one another promising that only when we have interpreted Hayek correctly, will we find utopia.

Now I'm just a simple country hog but I think getting Jathan and Ed back to dig into some of the nonsense hype about the last version of Web and compare and contrast with the current cycle would be a fantastic ep.

oh yeah i was just reading a blogpost where a blockchain skeptic decided to try to mint a nft to see what the deal is and he found out that the vast bulk of the ecosystem relies on like 3 API providers to manipulate and consult the blockchains. and they booted his nft off the platforms because he annoyed their sensibility (the url in the nft returned a different image based on the referer field, a joke that xkcd did during the first obama admin) https://moxie.org/2022/01/07/web3-first-impressions.html

It's amazing how sometimes libertarians sound like they're getting to about halfway there on a surface level (acknowledging inequality exists etc.), and then turn a corner moments later to do something completely evil as the solution to the problem. Web 3 sounds like it's got the problem of the videogame Destiny of, "what if every single player was the main protagonist all at the same time? This definitely won't make the story an incoherent mess that doesn't make any sense".

I still don't know whether l find that tendency more or less annoying than the Libs who just can't see the problems to begin with

Loved the analysis of Hayekian theory and how it sucks

There _was_ a Maoist startup. It's called Netflix and it's grown to control like 90% of our economy by pumping out a million products no one is bothering to question whether they need or not, and summarily removing anyone who might possibly displease the supreme leader.¹ [1] This is very much dumb-guy Sinology/political-economy &c. l really don't feel like finagling the exact mapping from Hastings to Jinping or from Spencer Confidential to Guongzhou's factories for a dum-guy post.

Good to see you taking on the true revisionist tendency: internet stagism. No, I will not justify this statement.

just got the idea for Shiny Uber on Web 3 logic: it's Uber but you have a token that says where you went to and from

on God no idea if Milo was on 0, 1, 2, or 3 layers of irony when he said "what if we democratised the factory?" utterly transcendent
