A MILF to End Austerity feat. Alex Yablon
It's the free one!
This week, Nate, Milo, Alice, and Hussein speak with journalist Alex Yablon (@alexyablon) about a US program in 2020 where the Federal Reserve leant money to municipalities--and the possibility of cutting out market-based austerity, if we want it. We also check in on Lordstown Motors and read a deeply insane ‘philosophy’ piece about why we should welcome a meteor.

The statesmen article is clearly written by a man, women go through 'torture' once a month and we still want to live. And let me tell you they hurt, they really hurt, but we keep going.
The alpaca decision makes so much more sense when you realise there were technical reasons the alpaca might have failed the test based on the medication it was on... but defra only allow two tests total, and the process demands iron enforcement! It's West Wing "the process demands it" bullshit but applied to a literal animal. Of course it would set off his unquenchable thirst for blood!
So fucking glad I cancelled my new statesman subscription lol
there are utilitarians who do stuff like "is this new vaccine worth a few thousand people across the world dying because of a 0.00000241 rate of side effect? yeah guess so, hit it" or "are 24 expropriated people worth it for a new rail line that will serve 10s of thousands of people" but you never hear about them, when they let a utilitarian out of the cage to talk to the media it's always "sure, the Iraq war might kill thousands of people, but could the economic development of a democratic Iraq outweigh those lost lives? absolutely yes" or "could an opening of the Northwest Passage and the following industrialization of the north of canada benefit indigenous people in a way that outweighs the occasional extra hurricane in florida? a case study of the benefits of burning more coal" or "if there was a nuke hidden in a container in the port of LA, would that be fucked up or what?"
adam tooze rules. read his books
Greatest episode in the world, baaa-by. Loved the NY, uh, municipal financing chat.
The Cenobites in Hellraiser have a more positive philosophy than that blackpilled guy. To them, all sensations, pain and pleasure are equal in value, differing only in intensity. They are unable to distinguish between the two and therefore all experiences are valuable to them. Pinhead would 100% deflect the meteor.
The arguments about extinction all feel more like arguments in favor of assisted suicide/euthanasia since they all focus on individual experiences
That thinkpiece about extinction gives off some extreme Less Wrong / Eliezer Yudkowsky vibes.
Less Wrong! Where the text at the heart of their ethos is bad Harry Potter fan-fic! Watch them turn any regular board-games-night into nothing but "Resistance" because they think it's relevant to the AI Box experiment. Because they think the AI Box experiment is _the_ problem of humanity l... um... may have some unresolved gripes about that specific thing happening...
I am curious to know if retrofitting a car to be electric vs. building a new electric car would be more cost effective. It's something I've thought about for a while because I don't think I've seen anyone talk about it.
oh we know this very very well. the economics of retrofitting will never make any sense outside pure DIY and restomod projects
a nearly hour and a half long episode? Heaven.
Well There's Your Product
Oh wait so that means last weeks bonus wasn't an episode that was recorded while back, so years and years for the bonus. Brave souls.
We've got to electrify a Trabant. Wouldn't take much more power than an electric bike.
not thrilled about the riffing on roger crisps name - tom crisp (no relation)
have to say i am now noticing and loving Milo's self-congratulatory "yeah" when he does a good bit
enamoured with the possibility of legislating all vehicles to be tesla-swapped like the absolutely bonkers-tier car dudes do with their miatas and shit
I need a 1000mi range converted Suzuki Mighty Boy
