The Neoliberal Cinematic Universe feat. Noah Suarez-Sikes
This week, we've brought on Noah Suarez-Sikes (@noahpasaran) from the DSA Los Angeles-Hollywood Labor group. We discuss unionisation drives in Hollywood, why capital concentration is making films worse, the conditions for non-star workers in the US film industry, and an app that's going to redefine your biological age. It is a good time!

Your humanity score? What is this app, the Gom Jabbar?
"Ever sift sand through a screen?" The tangential slash of her question shocked Paul's mind into a higher state of awareness. Sand through a screen. He nodded. "We Bene Gesserit sift people to find the entrepreneurs, influencers and wellness advocates"
Had Hollywood anything resembling object permanence there could be an interesting Logan's Run remake in Humanity. Especially if you include the fact that the app is going to be horribly wrong in its assessments and advice. Throw in some product placement; call it Aperolgan's Run; Boom! Funding Sorted.
Waiting for the Belarusian, Aperol-based adaptation of Eastbound & Down
I mean there absolutely are established links between meditation and health, through e.g. reducing stress levels and whatnot. But prayer is basically mediation, with many of the same benefits. At least, that's my understanding, but feel free to dismiss me as New Age Bullshit Sheeple.
As someone in the VFX industry as a junior artist, there is really no unionisation and it's basically at the whim of the company if you get to have a work life balance or not. The most tragic thing to me about the film industry is that Pinewood is entirely occupied by Disney for at least the next decade, the most iconic film studio in the UK and it'll only be put to use for repetitive franchise stuff for the foreseeable future.
I would love to see the gang cover the games industry. Which, even though much is known about how shitty working conditions are, I'd like to see an observation anyway, as it's a similar white collar desk job that's being made precariatised and practically has weekly union busting efforts.
TBH, the industry doesn't have to put a lot of effort into union-busting. There really isn't that much will to unionize in most games workplaces (in the US - I know that the UK has better union infrastructure in games, although that's a tremendously low bar). I think the tide is turning on that front, but, traditionally, the knowledge that there are ten bright-eyed college students whose dream is to do your job has done that on its own. To all those college-kids: The average game career is five years. The industry chews people up and spits them out. The pay is lower than other "tech" companies (By how much is highly variable based on studio and role). Crunch is absolutely real (although, again, highly variable based on studio and role). I'm not saying don't work in the industry (God knows I knew all of this going in and I still did it), but I am saying know what you are getting yourself into.
i beg every fellow hog to go listen to the caroline calloway balthasar speedboat milo referenced
We the hogs demand 10 hours of moaning. No edits.
I will raise my subscription a dollar for every ten minutes of extra moaning. [DO NOT HOLD ME TO THIS I CANNOT AFFORD IT]
Ha, in your face Riley, the secret cinema episode was marvellous (if that's the point at which this ep was recorded, I can hardly imagine y'all having the stomach to sit through another episode of years and years)
This dropped just as I’m leaving work now I’ve got something to listen to on my 90 minute commute home. Thank you
