Britainology 19: The City of London feat. Riley Quinn

Did you know that the City of London, the small mini-enclave that dates back to Roman times, is a separate state entity that predates the United Kingdom by hundreds of years? And that its special status makes it basically immune to disclosure rules and financial oversight? Well, sort of. Riley steps in to explain The Land of the Weird Bollards and much more.

Riley brings up his Fran time at 5 minutes and 45 seconds, which happens to be a respectable Fran time.

What i thought before this podcast: "the city of London has extra rights somehow" What i think now: "the city of London is the Kowloon walled city but for international banking"

I used to live in high wycombe and they have a very weid ceremony where people in period dress would weigh the Mayor on a massive set of scales at the start and end of their term, and if they weighed more than when they started, they get booed by the crowd for using taxpayers money to indulge themselves. Apparently the crowd aren't allowed to throw rotten fruit at them any more though.

Great ep, with them coming up during this episode it might be time for a Britainology about the most cursed “British” people of them all, Irish unionists and their weird organisations

J
Jake Garlick · July 18, 2021

Also has to include Scottish unionists, the Old Firm and, specifically, how fucking weird Rangers fans are

This is one of those episodes that makes be question whether Britain is a real place or something made up for fantasy novels
