Barrattly Legal feat. Owen Hatherley

This week, Riley, Milo, and Alice join special guest Owen Hatherley (@owenhatherley) of Tribune Magazine to discuss Barratt Homes: what is the deal with new-build housing in the UK? Why is it of such uniformly bad quality? And why has this become pretty much the only real new construction of homes in this country? Also in this episode: another re-discovered song from Johannes Vonk and the Clogheads.

Owen’s new collection Clean Living Under Difficult Circumstances: Finding a Home in the Ruins of Modernism is available from Verso Books here: https://www.versobooks.com/books/3789-clean-living-under-difficult-circumstances

Listening to this while building a Barrett home. Compared to other large builders they are one of the least shit. Still would never buy one. On account of them being shit

Those 20 story riverside apartments are for people that want to live in J.G. Ballard's High Rise the same way they want to go to Burning Man¹. Not out of any innate desire, but out of the feeling that they're supposed to live in a fancy riverside apartment and go to Burning Man. I wound up at a party in one (mostly on the balcony trying to dodge the spiky bullet. I didn't see any Ballardian excess through the window though), and it had this cursed, stagnant vibe. Maybe it was just it being 2020; maybe it was my own feelings of cursed stagnation reflected. I did get the sense that these people were all moderately successful in the anonymous parts of corporate media, could find no new aspirations, and were trying to fill that emptiness with a glamorous high-rise apartment... in Queens²... next to the giant Pepsi-Cola sign. [1] Also capital flight and tax dodging. Can't forget those [2] Queens is the best borough; Queens is not glamorous.
