The Sotadic Zone of Space

It's the free one!

This week, we're discussing Secret Cinema's plan to crowfund investor capital, the fact that Secret Cinema did a performance in Kabul in 2011, a Tory Lord being criticised for corruption (shocker), our pre-election take on Batley & Spen, and much more. Riley is on a fancy holiday so this episode is a gathering of Milo, Hussein, Nate, and Alice. Hope you enjoy!

Our lab actually uses Oxford Nanopore products very extensively. The "Nanopore" is quite literal, as it's a nanoscale molecular motor that sequences DNA passing through the pores based on electrical current. The precision of this assay used to be pretty bad (but our group was able to power through that), but they improved a lot in the last year or so. Very cost-effective tool for precise high-throughput sequencing that reduces cost dramatically over competitors. DISCLAIMER: I do not know if this company is profitable or will ever be profitable.

I had the same thing listening to another Canadian podcast thinking they were American until they referred to new york as down south and pronounced "again" as "a gain" and "been" as "bean". Then outright just started talking about Toronto

I made the mistake of going to NUS conference one year and I've never wanted to make actionable threats so much in my life since

Tim Martin to me looks like Peter Stringfellow in an alternate timeline, where the only difference is what business they ran. Also, the "ethical" union busting at Lush is fucked vibes to say the least. Please can we have a viewing of Cube? I'm ready to embrace the ridiculousness. Why do I feel like Milo is describing the premise to an Anime about noncing, which in some ways is just regular Anime.

Re: Riley and Nate having similar accents - I came to TF via having heard about it on Hell of a Way but having not listened to that for several months, and I straight up thought for at least 3 episodes that Nate had just gotten a slightly better mic and had started going by Riley for some reason.

I tend to find the way to tell is by paying attention how they pronounce their "r" s. Riley's is more distinct. I'd say Riley's voice is also a tiny bit deeper tonally than Nate. Easily done, though. I guess Riley's just one in a long line of Canadans being mistaken for Americans.

I paused the podcast for the George Galloway ‘cat incident’ and holy shit I wasn’t ready for that

My favorite No Evil fact is that they sold a vegan sausage called the Zapatista and said that they donated profits from it's sales to a Zapatista organization and when their shady labor practices were being aired someone reached out to this Zapatista organization who responded that they had never received any donation from No Evil

on all the companies that market themselves as ethical, as someone who used to work a minimum wage job making vegan protein bars: absolutely fuck those smug dickheads

Galloway wasn’t Alba, he had a party with basically the same program but pro-Union called All4Unity. As with Alba they stood candidates all over Scotland and none got in

Ah, so Kim Leadbeater is your answer to the newest senator from Arizona sen. Mark Kelly. He is the husband of Gabby Gifford, the congresswoman that got shot by some tea party psycho in 2011 (immortalized in the fix you scene from the newsroom)
