Lunch Jail feat. Devon

This week, we're discussing a few things: weird academy schools in Britain that want to do performative draconian discipline, a startup that is, uh, child-centric, and much more. We are pleased to welcome Devon from Kill James Bond and Da Youtube Zone to give us their perspective as a former teacher, and pharaoh-tier riffs.

General criticism of the podcast family, seems that there's no mass line and that some of the podcast members parrot American hegemonic criticisms of successful socialist experiments. The latest bout of raises alarm bells regarding NED influence, which is an absolute red line for me as I won't subsidize US govt propaganda.

if you’re convinced that we’re funded by the national endowment for democracy you are more than welcome to stop being a patron. We’ll definitely not notice, and it will spare us having to read posts like these

Thanks to Nate for the disclaimer about the US charter school movement BUT some states themselves actually have the same kind of mechanism as the UK—the state assesses local schools and then may step in to take over “underperforming” school districts, thus leading to the imposition of charters and loss of any local control over neighborhood schools. So… cousins, identical cousins? I made myself sad now.

For the record, my parents are fantastic, but some of their parents very much had that dynamic, and through re-telling, it seemed like an inhumanely miserable situation. I'm glad they died long before they could offer their thoughts on what having a gay grandson is like.

J

I understand - broadly - why that is, but experiencing it is really tedious, grinding and depressing. If I were to anthropomorphize "general UK vibes/culture", it would be like living with your elderly mother who has hated you all your life, who you can never please, who can never find any joy in anything no matter what you try, and yet you feel obligated to continue to entertain the notion that things can turn around.

J
Jesper Ohlsson · July 9, 2021

I have to say though, that following this podcast and learning more about the "I actually enjoy being miserable, and don't want to take any steps to have life be otherwise" that is modern british culture, has made me understand some scenes in UK films that always puzzled me as a teen. There are tons of scenes in UK movies where a character calls another "a perv" in a way that seems way too harsh for the situation, and where the sentiment clearly isn't about someone who is into S/M or whatever. All those scenes make more sense now that that I've gotten more familiar with the particular details of UK-neurosis, which (for a variety of reasons) has crystalized into a mexican-stand-off of people calling each other a pedophile.

J
Jesper Ohlsson · July 9, 2021

I'm sure this has been noted before, but as a non-uk person, it's really jarring how accusations of pedophilia is casually thrown around in british culture, with "nonce" (and "perv") seemingly being as common-place as calling a person a piece of shit or bastard in the US (for example). I understand that at least part of it is due to boarding school culture and stiff-upper-lip-shit, but even knowing that context, it's a really peculiar thing; like a whole society trying to express a deeply-set knot of anxiety, but only by nervously swatting at the outlines of it, cat-laser-pointer-style.

There really needs to be a Britainology on the absurd amounts of pedophilia in British culture. I used to be a quality assurance analyst for [A LARGE TECH FIRM POSSIBLY BASED IN REDMOND, WASHINGTON] working on audio/tx data for [A MOBILE AND DESKTOP ASSISTANCE PRODUCT NAMED FOR A RECURRING CHARACTER IN A POPULAR FPS], and I was horrified to find that requests for cp on browsers was not uniformly distributed across countries. UK and Brazil had the most requests from nonces. I just don't get it. I need to understand

The toilet stuff actually caused me serious psychological damage in school... It was one of the triggers that resulted in severe OCD around going to the bathroom, I would go twice during 15 minute breaks and 3/4 times during lunches and between every single lesson without failure. This progressed to me not sleeping and spending 2/3 hours a night walking back and forth from the bathroom from fear my weak ass bladder would wake me up. Anyway, it's now marginally under control (kinda) after 5 therapists, a psychiatrist and several years on a high dose of Sertraline. School was not the only trigger, don't get me wrong, but this obsession with controlling natural bodily functions is so fucked, can't imagine what people feel like on periods. I also have PEI which causes IBS symptoms and often suffered from dihorreah and cramps. So overall school was super fun

You joke about lessons in drawing shapes. I went to a Steiner school for a while and had lessons specifically on drawing shapes. One of the tapestry of things that made me the queerdo I am today.

Just when I thought things couldn't go lower, I find out Capitalists brought fucking shovels with them. Getting kids to rip each other off, over presumably toys and sweets, is something truly disgusting. I'm surprised that's even legal, considering emotionally blackmailing kids in advertising is banned, and for good reason (see the latest Mario Lego set announcing a Luigi Lego, by having the Mario toy do a software update in the toy, whereupon he starts crying and says "where's Luigi 😭".)

My old school converted to an academy when I was in year 9. From my pupil perspective, it changed literally nothing except they sent a letter home about it to parents. Not sure what the point was tbh but I'm sure it made some lord somewhere happy.

I've worked in education for over a decade, & everything you've highlighted here is true & in some places much worse. look into how many Lords run or own academy school chains

Didn’t the Bush-Era No Child Left Behind program have a provision for public school takeovers by private concerns?

Even the edit doesnt come *close* to covering the pillaging of US public schools, the pillaging of *charter* schools, and the current function of US education - it would be interesting for y'all to have someone on to talk about it, bc these snippets didnt come close.
