The Pragmatic Nut feat. Nish Kumar

This week, we've brought on Nish Kumar to once again listen to a horrible 'taut, sexy, political thriller' by a former MP -- this time one by Vince Cable. It sucks really bad but Riley, Milo, Hussein, and Alice had a great time and Nish suffered the English curse yet again.

Riley's egg is the best part of this episode

I reckon he half remembered the dildo Isis flag from London pride as a real Isis flag from an anti-war march and put it in the book.

I hope James O'Brien writes a thriller.

Hate it when my innocent political thriller about a plucky independent British arms dealer accidentally turns into a BNP campaign leaflet from 2006.

If you ever get Michael Fry on for a reading series you absolutely should do former Irish Justice Minister Alan Shatter's erotic novel Laura. It's about a deputy riding his secretary in Leinster House.

Anything with Michael Fry would be so good

It's just so ideologically inconsistent, Tories are bad for not liking political correctness, but one of the villains is like a woke university professor, arms dealers and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are good but the Lib Dems are good for opposing labour on the war even though we actually like blairites because they're real workers and not woke students. Who the fuck is this *for*? Although I guess that perfectly encapsulates the lib dem condition.

Riley here. The main thing about this book was that it squares all these circles, but it does so with pages and pages and pages of laborious writing. When you try to think about it all at once, it doesn't make sense. What really got me wasn't the bit where he grinds his axe, but where he has to write villains whose main thing is that they like illiberal things, regardless of what they may be.

I felt Milo's despairing scream in the depths of my soul. Fucking centrists man. Deranged.

One sentence in and I'm already broken 馃槅 It did just give me the crushed lathe of there being a British food-style takeaway in somewhere like the US. Just a bunch of Midwesterners munching on chips with mushy peas on a street corner. Bonus point for anyone who comes up with a potential menu for that!

Good point about Trump voice, he speaks on the offbeat like a psycho jazz artist while all of these Establishment squares can鈥檛 even hold down two and four without being stiff and awkward.

Every time you guys read an MP's thriller novel, it makes me feel so much better about my own writing. Thank you.
