Midwestology 1: A Posse, If You Will, of Insane Clowns

We've been very happy that you, the fans, have enjoyed Britainology so much. In an attempt to bridge the gap between our two cultures, Nate has brought on two fellow Midwesterners (Francis Horton from Hell of a Way, a native of St. Louis, Missouri; Joe Kassabian from Lions Led by Donkeys, a native of Detroit, Michigan) to flip the script on Milo. Now it's the good-natured Midwestern oafs in the driver's seat, and we explain the name of the region itself, why ICP had such appeal to our generation, and why literally everyone has a driving-while-intoxicated story involving being thrown out of someone's house.

"How much could a used VCR cost $10,000 ?" -Nate (kidding, I know that's not what they meant)

As the Canadian child of immigrants from Indiana, I have to point out that your riff on "What if the Midwest was still French?" accidentally invented Quebec.

Loved this. Hope there will be more soon. Thank you x

Eat my ass Nate, the northern strip of Kentucky is absolutely the Midwest

I'm enjoying the Missouri placenames such as Licking, Success, Boss, Plato and Huzzah.

I'm from Missouri and have an aunt from Wales, so there is your Welsh woman who knows where Missouri is

Fucking great episode, looking forward to more! Fun ICP fact: Violent J’s daughter is a furry and he’s taken her to several furry cons. He’s super supportive and even commissioned a fursuit that matches his clownsona. They made a video together calling out a dodgy fursuit maker that scammed his daughter a while back thats utterly surreal to watch but pretty adorable. https://youtu.be/HNSBIMLs96M Theres a lot of intersections though: Juggalos and furries are large, inclusive subcultures that are pretty anti-racist and get shit on a lot by the internet as a whole.

As someone from West Michigan I feel very seen in this. Please make more

> Googles Midwest > It is actually more east than west wtf

T
Trashfuture · April 22, 2021

it was “the west” back in the powdered wig days and the name stuck

At one point you guys have to discuss the duality of Illinois' 2 regions: Chicago, and the rest

Oliver Cant · April 21, 2021

Also, I just wanna say I respect Joe's streaming of various obscure JRPG's on Twitch.

Fun fact: Straight Edge was basically coined by Ian McKaye of Minor Threat (super underrated guitar player BTW) who is from DC, and whose dad was a reverend. It actually caused a lot of friction in the band, because the guitarist wasn't entirely committed to the whole Straight Edge idea, and that's how eventually they split up. Plus the pressures of being as popular as they were within their tiny scene hurt them. Had no idea people got that extreme with it, though. Suffice to say, I would not be allowed in the Courage Crew. I still deeply respect McKaye, even though I'm sure my lifestyle and his are VERY different. And also Fugazi is one of my favourite bands ever. Repeater is a classic.

As a Downriver rat, Kid Rock is from Romero which is Macomb county and decidedly not Downriver. Downriver still sucks though. Great episode!

I'm from western Nebraska and the idea that where i'm from has anything to do wit the midwest is laughable, as you correctly pointed out. Its all meth and Coors here mixed with nothing but a desire to leave this awful place.

E
Erik Anderson · April 21, 2021

the midwest vs the plain states as two very different cultural entities is something you touched on that no one outside of the plain states understands. kudos

A friend and I once did a study of rappers' appearances on The O'Reilly Factor, and we both agree ICP had the best one. They really make a fool out of Bill O'Reilly while dressed in clown makeup and talking about balls. Very entertaining: https://youtu.be/9KxTUZ33gdM

"actually I think the ICP should be a role model to children" - Bill O'Reilly

What a great idea for a podcast, the Midwest are an important cultural group in America and it's important to understand them.

c
cowteeth · April 20, 2021

you could do a whole series on straight edge, honestly. I used to work with a guy here in Massachusetts who I suspect (allegedly, in Minecraft,) used to be in FSU, which was another anti-racist straight edge punk gang. basically Boston Hezbollah

Triggering the flagfuckers by consistently calling the Union Flag the Union Jack.

I am excited for this because as a native of Riley's homeland (Ontario/the Greater Niagara Escarpment), I feel like there's a pretty contiguous Great Lakes/Midwest Kind Of Dirtbag Guy regardless of national borders, and I'm always interested to put more data up against that hypothesis.

I think southern Ontario is like western PA and Upstate NY in that they aren’t part of the Midwest, but are absolutely part of the rust belt.

T

My favorite site of living in the midwest is spotting the dudes with DUIs: Out of shape guys on bikes peddling too hard and not going far.

One other aspect I enjoy of the ICP is they made appearances at the 3 major wrestling promotions in the late 90s-2001 wwe, ecw, and wcw and later even for TNA

A
Alexandria · April 20, 2021

ICP hate racists, hate the feds even having a bit where they slammed a cop through a table at their concert and welcome their inclusive fanbase, icp and juggalos not my cup of tea but overall seem like alright misfits who aren't hurting anyone

e
etienne · April 21, 2021

ICP was labeled as a hate group for the longest time by the FBI so they better goddam be hating the feds

all the bands you mentioned here were popular in my school (north east england, late 2000s/early 10s) and the Type Of Guy they evoke is incredibly familiar to me, so maybe Britain really is the big Midwest
