American Psychosis | Episode 2: What's Going On (Feat. Dan Boeckner)
Andrew and Riley are joined by Dan Boeckner of Operators and The Bottlemen for the second episode of our series about the lasting cultural impact of September 11. We discuss Dan's recollection of the day, the impact that 9/11 had on the playlists of radio stations across the country, artists censoring their own songs, misguided musical output, and the only musician we can think of to create a lasting, prescient response in the form of a memorable concept album.

Sprayer Kinney did pretty good attacks on the homogeneity of America’s cultural response to 9/11 in their 2002 album “one beat” Also worth looking up is The Coup’s Party People which originally had the duo blowing up the twin towers on the cover art. A complete coincidence as they made the album before the disaster
Was there ever a third episode?
Awesome episode!
This series is so great, I loved this episode.
One Shot One Kill by Dying Fetus is probably one of my fav dumbguy responses to 9/11. They sold t-shirts with a Bin Laden face in a sniper scope on the back. It ruled.
I feel like the 2004 Leftover Crack Release Fuck World Trade should have gotten a mention,
Agreed Redding is just an off city. Very eerie
I was waiting the entire time during the music discussion for you guys to mention The Coup's album getting delayed because the original album cover for Party Music featured them posing in front of an exploding World Trade Center.
In an interview with Seattle newspaper The Stranger, Boots Riley spoke about his fight to keep the album cover following the events of September 11: There's been a whitewash in the media over the past couple days over what the U.S.'s role in the world is, and the fact that they kill hundreds of thousands of people per year to protect profit. Now how can I get to the point where I could be saying that on the world stage, and interrupt the lies that CBS, CNN, NBC, and everyone is saying? In my view, that [would be] by keeping the cover. Not because I think by looking at the cover you get all of this message that I'm telling you, but as a way to have a platform to interrupt the stream of lies that are being told right now.
Year Zero is a NIN high point, so glad you folks covered this
The band I Am the World Trade Center kept their name. Kings!
technically their name was even more accurate after 9/11 really
"We will bring down the Great Satan by denying them access to the Two Moons Over My Hammy!"
My sister was in a music video that got cancelled because of 9/11. Blink 182’s original video for their anti-divorce anthem “Stay Together for the Kids” because it featured the destruction of a broken home with a wrecking ball.
My middle school played Proud to be an American by Lee Greenwood six times a day during the 5 minutes of passing time we got between classes starting on 9/12 and didn’t stop until we returned from Christmas break in January of 2002.
I was too young on 9/11 to really experience the psychosis that overtook the US, so hearing the things they did is truly astounding
Milo did 9/11, prove me wrong!
9/11 jokes are the best, to find out it was Milo that made those possible in the first place makes him even more of a hero.
