Britainology 9: UK Rave Culture feat. UKRaveComments

Good lord, the Gen Xers of Britain are a special bunch. And man, do they love to reminisce in the YouTube comments. To discuss this phenomenon, and the culture surrounding it, we brought on TF techno expert Riley--as well as George, the creator of the UKRaveComments twitter account--to discuss.

I remember listening to the local Bristol pirate radio Jungle in the nineties. The shout outs to the local areas were charming. "Shout out to the Barton Hill Massive!", for example. Some of it was pretty amateur. I remember one set that seemed to be an entire 'Willow the Wisp' children's story tape with Jungle played over the top.

There is still a thriving Hardcore and Jungle scene even now. I'm supposedly a Gen x'er but I was 12 in 92, loved the music, still do

My dad proposed to my mum during a Carl Cox set in 1993, both mashed off their faces. Grown up with this for 25 years now, there is not a more relevant britainology for me

I swear I read somewhere recently (might even have been in the comments of the relevant episode) that Dave Courtney was in fact a doorman at Shoom back in the day

My first memory of raving was waiting for the hardcore and techno to stop so the jungle would start at about 2am in Milton Keynes sanctuary.. slowly jungle became the main scene and hardcore and techno was phased out ... Jungle was darker because of the samples in the music.. most from goodfellas, Carlitos way and other gangster movies which also influenced the dress code which was Italian designer clothes and it originated out of east and south east London ..Kool fm pioneered the movement along with producers like Shy fx who had a top 40 U.K. hit with U.K. Apache.... The drugs were still ecstasy speed and weed.. but once U.K. garage come in it became more cocaine and champagne... That鈥檚 how I remember it.
