Joanna Cherry has written a batshit crazy diary for the New Statesman, might be good for a reading?
SHE LITERALLY SAYS ADULT HUMAN FEMALES OH MY GOD
Hi - can you post a link to the essay Riley mentions at around 59:00 please?
I was looking through the ep using the 15 second skip feature to find what you were mentioning, I just hear Hussein go "Dudes rock", skip once, and Quantian1 saying "Hookers and coke" But yeah, I imagine Riley was potentially referencing this: https://vebaccount.substack.com/p/gamestop-or-microfoundations-vs-microstructure (I haven't read it, but following the twitter users website link, I imagine it is this)
Also, Guy Ritchie's cockney-ass take on King Arthur W/ Patrick Wyman would be legit, though.
I watched this with friends in the same sesh as Snatch and holy shit King Arthur sucks so bad
Lmaooo the shipping container houses are just "the stacks" from Ready Player One but somehow even worse
so wait Gaz Baz is named like that because of Basildon right?
(nate here) it's more like gaz/gazza is short for 'gary' and baz/bazza is short for 'barry', also see jez/jezza for 'jeremy'
OK, I’ve got an extended metaphor. So imagine you’ve got a casino. And the idea with casinos is that its a scam that works by letting everybody know its a scam, so people think they can scam the scammers. But the house always wins. But then this casino lets someone set up another casino inside the casino. A metacasino, where everyone bets on what people are doing in the original casino. This doesn’t make sense, but the casino suddenly starts making more money. The house still wins, so it’s allowed. But that opens the floodgates. Now people start setting up metametacasinos, and more. The ur-casino is still making money, but the owners (a respectable legitimate family known as the Corleones) are getting increasingly jumpy because they have no idea how their casino makes money anymore, just that it does. So one day the punters of sub-mega-meta-under-meta-casino 561 decide that very few ur-punters are going to bet on 22 black. But the punters of r/metacasinobets420 decide they are going to stick it to those elite sub-mega-meta-under-meta-casino 561 snobs by all going into the ur-casino and betting on 22 black. Things go fucking wild. All the meta-casinos and above suddenly stop working for a while, until they realise they can start betting on themselves losing a bet. Random people off the street are demanding unrestricted access to the roulette table. The Corleones are simultaneously terrified and ecstatic because someone is fucking with the money system, but somehow they are still making as much money as before. In the end, a lot of ur-punters lose their money as usual, more meta-punters than usual have lost money, the Corleones have doubled their net worth by doing nothing, and Joe Pesci is buried in a cornfield. In summary, the stock market is a normal place.
I just want all to know that Hostess’ stock symbol is TWNK, should anyone else out there be using Alice’s investment metrics :)
Getting sucked off by a TWNK, that’s what homo economus wants these days
Dang I wish you released this episode before I YOLO’d my life savings and then bought the dip with a second mortgage. Fuck why does this happen every time I take life-altering financial advice on the internet?
But actually—what could be done to save the people who put their life savings in at 300+?
I don't think you explained Blockable's aesthetics enough or there would have been more Minecraft jokes
This Game stop fiasco has been a truly wonderful time for Explain Guys™
Listening to the episode, I paused at some point explaining a 10-24 scam to my partner. Literally thirty seconds before the episode went into it. I should just listen and shut up :)
According to notorious reddit sit poster NASDAQ.COM " As of January 29th GME stock is still the most heavily shorted stock in the market, with a short interest of 121.07%." The 29th of January was last Friday. https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/are-these-the-best-heavily-shorted-stocks-to-buy-right-now-5-names-to-watch-2021-01-31
One quick point ill make is that on Wednesday morning 2 hours before market open MSNBC reported that the ceo of melvin had just announced that melvin had ended their short positions on gamestop tuesday night. The reported it as a fact even though it was obviously bull. Hedge funds like melvin dont just announce their short positions especially if that means admitting to losing billions. Hours later when it was obvious most people hadnt bought this obviously false narrative it was dropped. And then low and behold on friday melvin announced that it had exited there short positions on gamestop that day as in friday. So eithet melvin hadnt exited earlier in the week or had exited and then reshorted. Or most likely something totally different because hedge funds DO NOT just announce their short positions to the world to give people a heads up. As to the rest of it is pretty as much as insane as it at sounds. Especially after after wallstreetbets whent from 2 million subscribers last monday to 6 million friday.
The short positions are actually publicly identifiable information if you know how to read the financial spew
Hey, since you mentioned the guy in passing, do y'all have an episode on subprime auto lending in the archive? I'd love to dive in to that one.
