Britainology 8: Christmas Panto

Yes, it's a little bit late. It's late because Nate and Milo got exposed to covid right before Christmas and couldn't record while waiting on test results. But we have in fact discussed Jim Davidson's terrible bawdy Cinderella pantomime from 1995, entitled 'Sinderella', and discussed the concept of pantos in general. Hope you enjoy!

Perhaps ask Alice if she did ceilidh dancing in school? The most horrific two weeks of PE in the school year. Heel toe heel toe one two three turn. The boys having to invite the girls to dance. I was gay, it was like being ask to dismantle a bomb. Then you swap partners anyway. All of the dances are designed for the boys to be taller than the girls so if its the other way around it’s like a contortionist act. Everybody asks the teachers “when are we ever going to need this!?” The response: “you’ll need it when you go to a ceilidh when you’re older”. I’VE NEVER GONE TO A CEILIDH IN MY ADULT LIFE MR VERSTEEG YOU FUCKING LIAR. So. Yes. Cursed.

Tbf, I kinda consider Saturday Night Live to be like a weird American Pantomime equivalent since they don’t have one

can confirm, I did square dancing in elementary school in California.

they made us do square dancing in grade school gym in Flushing, Queens and regrettably, it did not stop the children from listening to DMC, in the place to be, who went to St. John’s University. it was however a reduced physical trauma alternative to Dodgeball or the President’s Fitness Test

I don't know if it would be tasteless but an episode on how uniquely depressing British porn & sexuality is would be pretty funny, providing you get Riley on to do a proper political analysis of the whole the Fake Hub universe. The lads holiday episode would be great too. Another suggestion I'd put forward is an episode is about the county of Devon, mainly as an excuse to get Devon on as a guest to talk about how cursed rural areas are. You know, I think the curse of Britainology in general is that there's so much you do with it. You guys are NEVER gonna run out of ideas! :D Thanks for such a brilliant episode.

Panto is deeply in the Irish psychosis, we literally have a known sexual assailant continuing to do this DEFINITELY NOT NONCEY OR HIGHLY ILLEGAL ACTIVITY

R
Ross McWilliams · January 31, 2021

Trump's going to be doing panto in a few years.

Funny enough these are semi-popular in Ireland which is just utterly bizarre when you think about how pantos are really up there in cursed Anglo inventions. Also, on the topic of bands from other counties that are massive in the UK and the UK only: anyone remember We Are Scientists? Prime example

You'll get pantos outside of Christmas in Ireland sometimes. Remember getting a day out of school for an Irish language Cinderella Panto and I'm 90% sure it wasn't Christmas.

I haven't had a chance to listen yet, but some may find this piece on the same topic to be amusing: https://franticplanet.wordpress.com/2017/12/11/i-watched-jim-davidsons-adult-panto/

Please can we have a Britainology on the slow yeasty rise of Danny Dyer, from B movie thug to National Sweetheart in just 20+ years.

Hell yeah! I don't even like the guy tbh, but it would be hilarious to examine how he came from one of a number of 'Ard Cuntz' to where he is now.

Canadian checking in, we got panto. I've never understood why Ross Petty does what he does every Christmas so thank you for at least giving me a historical framework for this shit. there are always ads for his productions up on the TTC so it's inescapable. https://ttdb.ca/site/wp-content/uploads/Cinderella-2015.jpg

To melt Nate's brain further about the concept of panto. My school did an end of year panto written by the sixth formers, where most of the jokes are dick jokes and school gossip. More than that however, every year they brought back one of school's retired geography teachers (i'll omit his name) to play fairy god mother; purely so a 70 year old in man in a pink fairy outfit could make jokes about his droopy wand and not getting it up. And that I feel is a micro example of britainology
