Editor’s note: this is something of an unusual episode, sorry! It’s just Nate and Hussein, but we’ve brought on journalist Nathan Akehurst, the author of the forthcoming book Along the Watchtower: Dispatches from Europe’s War on Migration. However, we have to talk about the Piddington referendum, the immediate fascist piggybacking that’s happened since, and the surprise discovery that a small village in Oxfordshire has a quite highly rated omakase restaurant.

Listener's Note: Don't apologise for the different content, this was a fantastic episode and exactly what I listen to this show for, a really good interview. As usual I leave the episode so angry I could burst because of how terrible the world is in ways that are so easy to fix or make better for literally everyone but the system we live under prevents any of that change to happen but I will continue to listen and learn and enjoy. Everyone on the pod is equally valuable to me and it certainly isn't The Riley/November show imo, so even tho I miss the other hosts I'm still more than happy. Anyway sending out a prayer or whatever version of that to all the brave bastards on the RNLI boats and similar globally. Saving people while enduring the scrutiny and hatred of millions sounds so fucking stressful.
without AT ALL intending to diss the other members who wr not on this ep- i do wanna say that i really did enjoyed it and got a lot from the deep dive- even tho it wasnt (as u mentioned at the top of the ep) 100 tf as per usual. the subject matter is horrifying and so hard to reckon w, but i still really love learning abt things like this from ppl like y'all who have been out in the field/on the boats 🤷😔🖤
Yeah every week I get emailed from authors who have been scammed by very impressive email that seem to be from my company and sound just like me but aren't. Its a weird nightmare

on the flipside, immense respect to the captains of these rescue ships
thank you for this episode, this was absolutely fascinating and there’s nowhere near enough discussion about the incredibly inhumane bureaucracy designed to force people to drown at sea in an age when no one should ever have to drown in the mediterranean or the english channel.

On our last day of recording the album we went to the top of Devil's Dyke and tried to commune with the netherworld. We're tentatively looking at recording another album next spring, and if that house is available to rent we're 100% going to stay in Ditchling again

I’m only aware of Piddington (American?) because of Jeremy Clarkson reviewing minivans in the early ‘00s Top Gear; ‘I drive a mini-van. I’m a bit of a Piddington.’ for all of us hopeless dorks with that piped into our soft impressionable elder millennial brains rather than maybe learn something useful? I feel like this is a little too perfect : coming full circle 20-25 years later? ‘If you’re online you’re meant to feel shit.’ True words, but I’m also a paying listener to Trashfuture which I listen to thru the internet (defacto), so I’m sort of getting scammed / scamming myself / careful what you say, but in a willing / eyes open going in sort of way? I also had a hobby that I turned into a business (maximum risk, and did ok, but no fun anymore…paid for a place for me to live and learned a few things I guess?).

We've been having this racist shit going around in my village in rural Cambrigeshire too. Someone put a letter through everyone's door scaremongering about how Capita are allegedly going to house refugees in a rental property near our local school and they've managed to successfully invoke a hate mob and get our racist Reform councillor and dipshit Lib Dem MP to fall for it. Meanwhile in reality I'm yet to hear about any actual problems about refugees here whereas American troops from Lakenheath who live off-base can not stop sexually assaulting women in the village and then getting flown back home to get a slap on the wrist (one guy who was jerking off in public in front of multiple women got three months in USDB Leavenworth) and I'm yet to hear a word about it from anyone. Its really worrying being trans and knowing that one conspiracy letter is all it takes to radicalise people into a hate mob. My immediate neighbours seem safe but I can't say anything about the rest of the village. Hate this country.
Is it better if they actually fell for it, or just pretended to out of desperation? I think it was during the Obama years that an American vice-admiral had an astoundingly poor emphasis and choice of words when apologising and trying to stress that the violence and violation, not sexual urges, were why his sailors had committed sexual assault while on leave in Okinawa. (or Yokohama? 'cheaper and easier to just hire a hooker', something like that) If it's any consolation, I've seen it work the other way. My chud adjacent teenage Melbournian Chess Nemesis (we play in public) has been targeted by what I can only describe as a coterie of trans activists who approached him in person. His last messages were about how he thinks some of them may be hitting on him. He's just a literally little guy, I fear that in addition to having new positions (ha) on queer rights they may have wrung him dry beyond all function. He hasn't made it to a match in weeks
I work in cybersecurity and got scammed (resulting in minor annoyance to me), because someone was exfiltrating information from my ISP ticketing system and just took the stolen information from there. I knew it didn't sound right but I was exhausted, didn't want to hungup and explain everything again, and just assuming the offshored guy had no clue and going the path of less resistance. So with enough leaked information it can happen to anyone
I've been getting a very increased number of scam calls recently which when I awnser are done in ai voice and its just like "oh this is what ai is actually for"
I haven't listened to this one yet and I'm sure the guest is great but I want to get it on the record that I would absolutely listen to an episode that was just Nate and Hussein shooting the shit.
