I Can’t Believe It’s Not Verhoeven feat. Tom Walker

We dragooned friend of the show Tom Walker to discuss the recent Will Gluck film ONE NIGHT ONLY, which can be described as an intended meditation on life in a fascist society that somehow instead just lectures the audience about how it’s better to wait for marriage. Abstinent Times at Ridgemont High. There’s Something About Chastity. All sorts of ways to look at it, but—as the cast discovered—the best way to look at it is to watch it on a cam rip feed with endless gambling ads overlaid.

I regret to inform Nate but Regal cinema revamped the pre movie "rollercoaster" with cleaner more modern graphics. It sucks and the old one being so quaint was better

The conservative scantly woman point is so funny because you have guys that did D-Day with nude photos under their 1911 grips and loved doing drag shows. Both more masculine and less emasculated than whatever these boys think they are doing today.

Nate, I have fantastic news for you: Regal still has the rollercoaster. I throw my hands up and ride along even though I'm 30 years too old to be doing that.

The plot of this movie seriously sounds like a South Park special or porn parody. If you renamed it "The Splooge" you could easily reuse the script for either of those.

So in this universe, the fascists finally get a world where the victims of sexual assault are punished at least as badly as the perpetrators.

Equilibrium taught me that you can have an ok one note stupid sci-fi movie, as long as you have cool action scenes. One Night Only could have worked if lack of sex gave the characters magical gun powers.

If this movie was set in Britain, the evil megacorp making the tracking chips would also own the failing pizza restaurant and be controlled by the Percy family

T
Thor · September 18, 2026

The film Hussein wants to watch is the 90s reactionary cult classic of One Night Only: Demolition Man with Sly and Snipes. Physical intercourse is also outlawed, but psychic intercourse a-okay.

Also all restaurants are Taco Bell. Not quite sure how that fits in here but it feels like it does.

wouldn't the whole workaround be just a sham marriage? like get married for a few months, have as much sex as possible, divorce and thats it. am I overthinking it

In my opinion NO bc that was literally the 50s-60s, source: Liz Taylor (Burning Love, great book)

I love Tom on his own, but this movie is screaming for Demi's input. Geordi LeForge was always horny.

Commenting for a THIRD time to say something I haven't stopped thinking since listening to this ep: one thing I always really dislike about a lot of these "premise-heavy" dystopian movies is that you never see how it's implemented. Like, people have to submit to getting the implants. That's pretty horrific and it's just never shown because it's like they popped into existence from nowhere, when in reality it would probably look like the Nazis' forced sterilization program for queer and neurodivergent people.

W
Wawawawa · September 18, 2026

Is this movie a circumcision metaphor?

B
BarFly · September 18, 2026

It's strange to me now to hear Tom's voice when he's not being interrupted by a car rocketing off three buildings at a million miles an hour.

Just to say, the production house that made In Time was sued by Harlan Ellison because *they absolutely did not come up with that premise,* and unlike almost all the other times Harlan Ellison sued for copyright infringement upon "Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman, this one he was right about. That movie was to Repent Harlequin what The Batman is to Michael Keaton

"You see people making out in public, who cares, unless you're so Kirkpilled that you see it as the decline of society or whatever" no but a large percentage of Americans are just that. I have seen queer people who say that it's like child harm to mash face in public because a kid might see it, which to me as a European is fucking insane. The US is an entirely puritan country, it contaminates every thought Americans have and the only difference is like, how much they allow it to.

about a month ago this lady came up to me in a local restaurant on her way out and told me in a condescending tone that i was being too loud which Ok sure fine you said your peace, its a loud restaurant and i work in a loud environment all day but then when I told her i don't really care about her opinion she went nuts like no adult has ever told her that. thats the way people are here, they think they're the most important person ever, and thats exactly how trump acts. queers probably do get these kinds of people coming up to them all the time
