Who Will Be the Bill Gates of Perception? feat. Kojo Karam

Kojo Koram, author of "The Next Fix: The Winners and Losers in the Future of Drugs," joins us to discuss what comes next after the War On Drugs and how capital intends to colonise this new frontier… and why Brewdog is involved (again!) Before that though, we discuss Farage’s latest victim stunt and discuss a VERY real company—perhaps one of the realest in history.

Kojo’s pronunciation of Peter Thiel turning my head and often unintentionally appropriate.

it feels pretty bad that 10 years ago i got banned from the chapo traphouse subreddit for posting about the guy that stabbed the dictator of his country to death with a butter knife when he saw him on the streets of paris and then convinced a jury not to convict him on the grounds of "too based to put away", and now the libs that banned me are running a successful Propaganda of the Deed deathcult

Honey also is being sued because they secretly replaced affiliate links from individual creators with their own https://www.trevorlasn.com/blog/honey

I bet the reason their extension uploaded that full page source snapshot is that their whole "is this a shopping site" algorithm was (and probably still is but potentially with less sensitive data in the call) just feeding that snapshot into an LLM and asking it "please answer yes or no to whether this looks like a shopping page". And there's the "AI powered" part of it too. If it's being used for that purpose and that's not just pretext for a data harvesting for selling scheme that would be invasive by the standards of that kind of app, I can't think of a single more likely reason why the data would even need to leave the user's device. You can do sane heuristics for a question like that with a handful of if statements. Hell, you could probably have the same LLM vibecode better herusrics that can run within the browser extension. This so fucking funny

My old roommate's sister went to Stanford and hung out w/ Phoebe. They went on a hike w some other girls and Phoebe charged her $6 for a bite of her sandwich. They stopped hanging out eventually bc, and I quote, "We're just very different people" i.e. I don't hang with poors. A real cunt. Roommate's family was extremely wealthy. Dad is a distinguished law professor at UVA. Still too pedestrian for miss gates

Apparently they found "communist litterature" at the home of the widdecombe suspect. ..Which - in a world that increasingly straight up doesn't read books, myself included - is one of those "oh, wow, really? Did it have any pages in it, or was it one of those clutter-items from Skyrim meant to fill up a bookshelf and make the home seem cozier? Was the book next to it named the Lusty Argonian?" Like, what passes for communist litterature in the current state of the UK? A phonebook? Any kind of acknowledgement that a society exists around you, still? Cause if it was The Little Red you know that was strickly for picking up girls at uni, and that spine has never been cracked even once. He just held it up and hoped for the best.

G
George Toner · July 15, 2026

You're joking but I have heard it said that there is only one book of non-communist literature, 1984. Everything else is at best a pretentious distraction from non-fiction and/or The Bible, or more commonly a form of propaganda which targets the kind of person who thinks they're better than you

Absolutely fascinated with riley's use of the word "pyromancy" right off the bat here and whether it was a slip of the tongue (as pyrotechnics and necromancer both make sense here) or an accidental reveal of his interest in arcane fire magicks

Being like in my mid 20s I knew nothing about Ann widdecombes like actual political stances or anything more that she was like a wierd right wing person there to do posturing and sabre rattling and that's it. After actually looking into it I do think her one actually held belief is in homophobia which is what I think will prevent them from making this mean more than an attempted increase in support for the online safety act or something.

J

At this point "Brewdog" is more associated in my mind with being on this podcast for non-flattering reasons than they are a maker of beers of last resort. They're almost like one of those silicone valley companies whose name is now completely disconnected from their current core competency (..as it were). "Yes, I know we're named CompuQuick, but we actually don't do computers or tech-support anymore. We do speculative maintenance, by which I mean we do a kind of fraud that's both too complicated and boring to explain before you lose interest and stop listening to me."

The future of drugs is making your own opium. Synthetics merely derange the organism.

A

Though more in keeping with the topic of the episode, I have noticed that certain cultivars and crosses seem to be yielding much higher thebane and noscapine moieties, which I think is due to the prevelance of strains used to produce the precursors for oxycodone etc.
