Euthanising the Brewdog

NOTE: This episode had some technical issues with the sound due to remote recordings. We're really sorry!

They've finally done it. They arrested Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and not a single person is shedding a tear. But there's also more news afoot: the collapse of the hated Brewdog, and the recent disclosure of just how petty and evil the Labour right are. We get into all of this, and more.

I sometimes wonder the world we’d live in had I listened to the voice in my head and sucker-punched Farage when I walked past him with no security detail on the sidewalk outside my Manhattan office in 2017

Some people don’t want power. They want to be the Jester who receives benefits from being near power but with none of the responsibilities nor consequences of being the one in power.

The point about Labour Together freaks actually being bad at politics reminds me - and I'm sure I've used this analogy somewhere before - of a discussion about Game of Thrones I had. Ned Stark is demonstrably bad at playing the game - he openly announces his moves to anyone who'll listen w/no sense of self-preservation or planning outside the "rules" - but there's a good argument that Cersei isn't very good either; she does well enough for the first half off the back of Ned's incompetence and the fact that her family held the throne, but after a point you realise there's a difference between being good at the game vs "I can just blow up the equivalent of St. Peter's Cathedral w/all my enemies inside and fuck the consequences." (Yes, Cersei avoided the immediate expected consequences of that action, but that's because the writing was bad by then.)

I'm sure I've made this point before, but ASOIAF as a whole makes a point which Benieoff & Weiss missed because 'OMG awesome slay kween yass' etc which is that you can't just break the rules and then expect the rules to protect you. It makes another which they missed because they think of most people as beneath them, which is that you can't just ignore the opinions of the 'smallfolk' and expect things to work out for you. Look at the post-Wed Redding Riverlands - completely ungovernable since none of the lords accept the ascendency of the Freys, and the smallfolk are up in arms over high taxes and poor treatment after losing a beloved dynasty. Real Walder Frey/Benioff & Weiss energy in the Labour Right

At this rate they're going to run out of 're-' words to use in the insurgent rightist party names. They've got Restore, Reform, Reclaim. They'll need to start using more abstruse words like 'reinvigorate', 'reconquer' (British Éric Zemmour, horrifying thought), 'rejuvinate', but I don't think their supporters can read words that long

G
George Toner · February 21, 2026

Rejuvenate would fail almost immediately if it even got off the ground to begin with, but not because of the word length

Jeremy Kyle is akin to Jerry Springer in that both are human bear baiting. Kyle is unique in that his politics have always been very explicit and easy to pin down, and the manipulation of his subjects is from disdain, where Springer simply doesn't think about the background of the people he chooses to display to America.

s
skedazzle · February 21, 2026

I get the sense Jeremy Kyle is more Dr Phil (they gave the same incredulous disdain if in slightly different cultural flavors) than Jerry Springer, who was a politician and used to do kumbaya segments where he waxed philosophical and tried to be Mister Rogers at the end of every episode of his freak show spectacle

i have not been paying attention to who the tories are is "Generic" a real guyor a joke

V
Vanessa P · February 21, 2026

Robert Jenrick is a real guy who used to be a centrist remainer Tory and pivoted to fascistic ethnonationalism when he realised that would get him more attention. Basically he was engaged in a power struggle with Badenoch constantly trying to one-up her with stupid stunts like recording fare dodgers on the subway to demonstrate how out of control crime is, until recently when he defected to reform. 'Robert Generic' is very much the canonical spoonerisation of his name, I believe Farage himself called him that when he was a tory lol

Nova's comment about "how did we lose to these fucking people" is very much how I feel about the USSR, as someone who was born way after it collapsed. Like, how does a system (ostensibly) built around science and industrial progress lose to one that, at least under Reagan and Thatcher, did not think either of those things even *existed?* Really confounding stuff.

W
Wawawawa · February 21, 2026

Also a similar thing with "oh Britain (but really every western country) is in terminal decline and nothing can fix it even if a progressive government came into power". How??? Like yes obviously the existing parties are completely politically morose, but "our" (kind of being cringe and referring to the whole species here) technology is better than ever, you don't even have to bankrupt your department of energy for a carbon-free energy source anymore by building nuclear plants, solar panels are basically free and they're talking about making batteries out of table salt now for longer-term energy storage. Like maybe this is a little *too* vulgar in terms of marxism but I don't understand why it's not possible to just make the economy like 10% more real again.

J
Josephine · February 21, 2026

One thing that you didn't mention in regards to restore going in the direction of reform until a further right party comes along is that within a week of being formed the posting dipshits have crawled from the caves to try and get Jeremy Clarkson on side bigging him up as this massively important cultural figure that will bring onside the workers of Britain instantly because he has a telly show about running a farm he got for tax reduction purposes.

If Andrew went to Belmarsh, he would go to the "celebrity" wing. He might end up in Tommy Robinson's old cell, and like Tommy inadvertently end up in an episode of "Welcome to HMP Belmarsh with Ross Kemp".

The sense of entitlement in the British media-political ecosystems is breathtaking. Its like one of those littoral spaces where the stagnant pools of a semi-dried up river overlap with swampland, and the eels wriggle their way between them to avoid algal blooms while the fish trapped there slowly suffocate. The smell when they die off en masse is incredible, even if scavengers come from hundreds of miles around there is just too much for them to eat and so most of it rots beyond the point where even the most desperate will partake. Writhing seas of maggots become clouds of flies thick enough to clog spiderwebs and fill every ant colony larder
